PLEASE HELP, where did my sound go???

I replaced a GT430 with a MSI GTX 460. Upon start up, drivers were installed and sound was still working. After re-boot, sound is gone. I tried everything I could find on the web. As a last straw, I cleared my CMOS and did a clean install of Windows. I left the GTX 460 out in order to try to get the sound back working. I reinstalled all updated drivers (excluding any nVidia drivers, as if I never installed a video card to begin with) and still no sound. One thing I did noticed was that in my BIOS it is still showing the GPU offset, which tells me that even after clearing everything and reinstalling everything, there is still some part of my GTX install that remains, because this didn't show in the BIOS until after I originally installed the GTX. Now when PC starts up I hear a small popping sound from the monitor speakers, but then there is no sound. I have also tried using headphones in the rear jack where the monitor is hooked up and the front audio port, but no sound. I do not have a stand alone sound card, and might get one, but would really like to just get my PC back normal. On Board audio is enabled in the BIOS. Any other suggestions?

Just guessing as not all that familiar with NV cards and audio. But if it has HDMI Audio capabilities. It could very well be "taking over" as the default audio device. Can check under Control Panel/Sounds/Playback and see if there is an NV audio device. I know I did have my ATI's HDMI Audio "take over" once kicking my X-Fi out.

Try uninstalling your sound card devices from Device Manager then select "Scan for Hardware Changes"... it may reload your sound drivers in the right spot.

Did you check all of the places where sound volume controls are? Sometimes you need to hunt around for them, happens to my setups or installs occasionally. I usually find it but I need to look over a bunch of stuff before I do???

Did you go into device manager and see if it was selected as the primary audio device? Or disable all other audio devices that are not your video card?
And just for good measure, have you tried reseating the cable on both the video card and the monitor? Maybe it got a little loose and is causing audio problems.

And lastly, are you sure that on your monitor the sound is turned all the way up and not muted? Do you have another device to test the speakers to make sure they're working?

The answer to all questions above is yes. One last thing to mention is that when I press thr mute/unmute button I also hear a slight popping sound, an a slight tone, like you hear when a speaker is on, but nothing is playing through it (if that makes sense). It is almost like the speakers are on and everything is correct, but my PC is not sending the actual sound signal to the speakers for some reason, but is is sendinmg the rest of the information (as far as setup, settings, etc...).

Possible conflict with the NV HD audio driver?

Edit:Scratch that you tried it without NV drivers.

On my board I have to disable the ATI sound driver in the Bios. Do you have that option? I wonder why you are showing to digital hdmi outputs?

Edit: I see you also show four in the device manager. My ATI only shows as 1. I am thinking the problem is there. Delete them and restart the computer. It should reinstall correctly when you turn it back on. IF that is the problem.

does your case use AC97 front panel audio? if you had that set and you removed the header from your motherboard, you lose all audio until its reconnected, or the jumpers there when the board was new are reconnected.

i bring this up because its possible you removed it when you moved the video cards, and forgot to reconnect it.

I am using HD audio connection, and yes it is connected. I believe there just might be something that happened to the MOBO onboard audio. Not really worryied about RMA it, as I know I could just get a Sound Card fot the shipping cost of the RMA and probably be better off. Seems like this will be the way to go. I appreciate everything y'all have offered and if you can think of anything else out of the ordinary, please add.

BIOS needs to be set to HD, not to AC97. just making sure on that one.

also, how is this set?

if somethings connected to the front, it might cause problems

there was an update for win 7 a few months back that conflicted a few audio filters.

the way to fix it was to disable all sound effects...

worth a try at this point.

Thanks for all the replies. Decided to go to Best Buy and pick up a sound card. They had a Rocketfish one listed as an Open Box Item for $27. Decided to go ahead and get it. Much to my suprise, when it rang up at the counter, it was only $8. Turned out to be a great buy, and now all is right with the world.
