My antec quattro 1000w psu just blew up

Hey TPU crew :rockout:

So 3 days ago i'm on my pc on ebay, bidding on a door for my car and the psu explodes, trips the power and the house goes dark. :banghead:

First and ONLY time i use an antec psu.

To make things better my spare psu 650W AcBel 660W can't power all my fans & the 6970's in cfx & BF3 is annoyingly slow with 1 card so i'm thinking of this as replacement psu.

There around AU$280 looks like a winner price wise.

Anyone got one of these??? with multi gpu's?? i assume it has no problem powering 2 cards?

I've been extremely happy with my Seasonic 1000w 80Plus Platinum. Runs nice and cool and has plenty of power. TPU's review of it is pretty good as well. I have a Corsair GS800 and I wouldn't say that Corsair isn't a bad choice either, but the Seasonic might have enough of a competitive price, that it may cost less and be more efficient as the same time.

I think most corsair are re-branded seasonics so go for the better deal between those.

i had the same experiance as you with my 1200w thermaltake toughpower...

i swapped it out for an 750w seasonic m12... and ive never been happier...

i have the thermaltake replacement here and i darnt use it... ^^

that corsair psu is decent... go for it...

why not spend $50 more and get the ax1200?
i moved from a hx850 to ax850 and am mush happier with the ax
the fan is smaller on the ax than the hx and much quieter
the psu was much smaller too, bit of a shock when i saw it
looks the same size as a 700w psu
plus you can change the cables and its fully modular

There is no visible damage, that i can see. The stink of burnt is pretty strong though...

Not necessary re-branded, but manufactured by. And they also use CWT for a lot of their units too, in fact this HX1050 is CWT. I might be mistaken, but I believe only the AX series is Seasonic actually, the rest are CWT.

What's funny is the antec tpq's are built by enhance which is widely known as a better OEM than CWT that you are all bragging up and the same manuf of thermaltakes high end units :shadedshu

I sees damage!
Looks to be a oops in the quality check.
A wire from a component wore through ( or burned through ) the PVC cover on the cap and touched the metal barrel inside.

Go POOF!

Get an RMA and send it to them and get another... sell it and use the monies toward what you want.
Save pics for your proof of defective quality.

Ya mate sorry to hear that. My mom is using Antec PSU as well.

I can only recommend ThermalTake for long lifetime (I use this one myself: http://thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?S=1344&ID=1942 , I have had some bad luck with Corsair, but I love the brand and the PSU was getting old when it started acting up and I was a smoker back then as well and that isnt good for the pc.

Which version of the Toughpower? :confused:

I'm still running THIS one. When I built my C2D System wtih a HD2900XT I had intended to go Crossfire so that one seemed like the one for the job. Still going strong and hope it stays that way. I have the first gen Seasonic M12 600W in the closet as a backup.
