Not too late, ... It's just not as impressive as the price would imply and that leaves a lot of room for AMD to, just as this article says, slide in a very cost effective and sensible HD 7990.

I'd think a price of $750, while 1Ghz and boost with better on power than the OEM specials 7990. Given its "Malta" designation I'm even wondering if this isn't a chip that's on new silicon... not exactly "Tahiti" based? I mean "New Zealand" was the original designator for the dual "Tahiti", while now hearing "Malta"... something changed. We also know AMD is talking about Bonaire XT (7790) coming, could this also be a "re-spin" with a die size that might be little less (or more) than Tahiti? With some juggling of texture/pixels/transistors that keep as fast, but better on power? We know that dual Tahiti are handily besting a Titian, but AMD probably is looking at a better power envelope as to be in the GTX690 area.

aha that's cool, 7990 over 1ghz GPU mean beat gtx690 with 3Gb and priced at 1K it's fu**ed gtx titian, so it will be best chose for 1K price card.

The GHz Edition Tahiti "XT" isn't an improvement over Tahiti as far as power consumption is concerned, so I'd be inclined to look at the present HD 7990 OCéd numbers for guidance. Hexus's review seems the latest (published 6 hours ago). 1080 Core/ 6200 Effective mem pulls a system total 553 watts (baseline a more modest 438W)

Given that Bonaire sits as the third tier chip (below Hainan and Curacao) it sits where Cape Verde sits in the present line-up. Assuming Pitcairn type performance, the die should be smaller...but I doubt that AMD would use two mainstream (HD 7850-7870 performance) chips to compete against the GTX 690 or Titan....and make no mistake, this HD 7990 is all about the dick-waving and prestige of "fastest card" -something AMD's comedy duo (Devon & Darren) alluded to a few weeks ago- and I picked up on at the time. Wouldn't surprise me if AMD found a use for those leftover Tahiti LE chips though.

You do realize that there are already sub-$1K HD 7990's in the marketplace from PowerColor (2), VTX3D, Club3D, and HIS ? ...and that doesn't seem to have affected Titan uptake to any great extent.

They are already waving the fastest CARD line ala ares 2 ,just a baffling release unless its way cheaper then a 690 imho as for titan uptake nvidia have ardent fans they could release another g92 card as780 and many would buy it, my dumb ass mate for one , he bought 6 different g92s expecting lots each time

Having had the pleasure of working on both Titans and 7990s I'm impressed by the price performance ratio of the 7990 and the engineering of the Titan. But the 7990 as it is is a brutal design while the Titan feels overpriced when you compare it to the 690 and 7990 (or CFX 7970).

At present it appears that NVIDIA is the one with multi GPU driver issues since neither Quad SLi 690 or Tri-SLi Titan will return correct scores in 3DMark and game performance feels patchy and rough compared to Dual SLi Titan, 680, 690 and to a lesser extent 7970/7990.

If AMD can do a 4890 style update to the 7970/7990 then they have a contender if it's marketed well.

To buy six different G92's he would have had to downgrade at least twice (i.e. buy a 8800GT >downgrade to 8800 GS > upgrade to a 8800 GTS > upgrade to a 9800 GX2 > downgrade to 9800 GTX > no change in downgrade to GTX+...or skip one or more of those SKU's and downgrade to 9800 GT or downgrade to a GTS 250/240 or downgrade to an OEM card).

He did a lot of side grades and unsuccessfully tried to sli two different cards a 1 and a 2 gig, didn't work so he bought two more identical. I was lost for words when he told me bit he thinks hes got it all sussed. Yeah id buy ref base card add water block and oc myself obv. I was half hopeing for a higher shader count tahiti but clearly dreaming

I agree with all those wondering if they will use a new chip, I assume we agree on Hainan.

All we really know is that it will use clocks above 1ghz, and let's be realistic, that would use greater than 375w if Tahiti in full spec. If this thing is competing on some level (performance, value alternative, or both) with Titan or 690, it will also compete with them on power envelope, which is 300 or 375w. Full Tahiti GHZ ED just ain't feasible.

While I can't rule out they would staple a couple 7950s together and increase the default core clock/voltage and give it 375w, it would make just as much if not more sense to use the chip everyone is waiting to compete with (on an efficiency level) to 680. The only thing that is iffy is a ram config. Tahiti could use 6GB, perhaps better for 2560, while obviously the other part would likely be 4 (1080p) or 8GB (2560+). 8gb seems questionable if the part comes soon, but 4Gb (512MB) ram chips are coming ~q3-q4.

Who knows what this will end up being, but it will not compete on performance if not 1792sp. Less (1536sp) could be a good value (like 4850x2 back in the day), but it won't get up to 690 level. 2048/384-bit will not be as efficient and use too much power or leave clockspeed efficiency on the table. AMD needs at least 1792x2 @ 1000-1050 and 6700-6800mhz 256-bit or 4500mhz/384-bit for the product to REALLY make any sense outside of being a better value.

I know that’s why I think "Malta" will be a re-spin of its' own. While a Boost’d chip aren’t different, they’re all Tahiti "XT"; although, TSMC finally started providing better process chips, which AMD then used to implement a version of Boost. 7970's with or without Boost still had Tahiti "XT" chips, just one’s that had correct "low leakage gates" those went for the Boost versions. The reason New Zealand stopped was twofold; TSMC wasn't at first delivering great silicone and then not enough. AMD figured it best to stand-down, as such chip with gate problems would look terrible on power realizing that even before GTX680 hit.

I'm wasn't saying they’ll use Bonaire XT in the dual, only that AMD seems to have disclose the ability to juggle stuff, the amounts, and placement to get improvements, and might have a revamped version of "Tahiti" that does everything, while needing less power. Ah, but Nvida use what were to orginally be "mainstream" chips (GK104) to do the GTX690... What good for the goose is...

I wouldn't think that AMD would throw new silicon at a low production halo part when there are more deserving markets crying out for that GPU ( enthusiast mobile for instance).
AMD/ATi have never launched a new product line with a dual GPU card first out of the gate, and I'm not sold that they are going to reverse that trend with a bean counter in charge

Feasible or not, sometimes you run with what you've got. Review benchmarks invariably only use reference SKU's for on-going comparisons, and at this time, AMD aren't dominating with the 7970GE. My guess (as it was a few weeks ago) is that AMD will just toss in the Tahiti based 7990 as a stop gap measure to break up the Nvidia monopoly in those review graphs. They won't look favourable in power consumption, but that didn't stop AMD launching the 7970GE to combat the GTX 680.

the same problem goes for amd when going to 3 or 4 gpu core work in tandem.
