OCZ Vertex 5 SSD Series Detailed

OCZ is reportedly readying the 5th generation of its Vertex line of high-performance consumer SSDs. Vertex 5, as it's being called, could retake market positioning of being the company's flagship product, from its Vector series. The new lineup, which could consist of 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB models, could be launched towards the end of May, 2013.

OCZ could use Vertex 5 to strengthen its lineup against Samsung, which appears to have captured the performance segment with its 840 and 840 Pro series, using aggressive pricing, particularly with 840 (non-Pro). Vertex 5 could be based on the same Barefoot 3 platform as Vector, with a few tweaks. It could integrate 20 nm MLC NAND flash. With the company engaged in legal tussles with some of its former investors, it could be interesting to see how the company competes with Samsung's pricing.

Well, I've had 2 Vertex3's and a Vector that died in a short time. Now I own 2 840's and NEVER had an issue! No 'BootMGR missing' errors, no bluescreens... OCZ, you lost me forever! :shadedshu

Well, on the flipside, I have had a few OCZ SSDS starting with the original 30GB Vertex in May of '09, a used 120GB Vertex that a guy at work beat to hell in his Mac laptop, and also two Agility 3 240s in RAID 0 in my Prodigy rig at present and have yet to experience any major problems with any of them.

Im with Wrigley on this one. All I've ever used has been ocz and never have I had a single issue with any of there ssd's

My first and current SSD is also an OCZ and it's going strong. No issues yet and i hope for the foreseeable future. I might jump into one of these Vertex 5s if the reviews are good.

I just installed my very first SSD due to some good reads, I went with the vertex4, I like the performance thus far, I hope it lasts.

OCZ has had their fair share of SSD issues. It remains to be seen exactly how this 5th generation of OCZ products performs and how reliable they are or not.

SSD's are still in a state of tech development so what's "hot" this week could be passe in a month or two, though in reality few people could ever tell the difference in system performance between an early SATA II SSD and the latest SATA III SSD, other than in benches.

Sweet! I can't wait. I've had some of each of the Vertex 1-4's, and my 3 Vertex 1's in RAID 0 are still working great along with all of the others.

When a company sells enough product, there are bound to be failures. It's partly just statistics. Also, you had to very carefully follow instructions when updating firmwares back in the day and that was probably a major cause for RMA's.

From what I can find out, no date has been set for it's release, so it won't be Z87, and probably not "X89".

I don't doubt nor deny the various issues some had with OCZ SSDs...I just think too many have unfairly written off the entire brand as a result compared to other manufacturers. Even if theirs were truly more failure-prone overall than, say, Samsung or Corsair (which I still am not convinced is actually the case...but I don't have actual numbers, of course).

So whose binned, unfit for SSD flash chips are they using this time around? More binned micron chips?

OCZ is near bankruptcy mostly this is probably just to show that they are still actively operating trying to turn things around while they A) hope to make profit or B) can find someone to buy them out before they go belly up.

My OCZ Experience

I don't doubt nor deny the various issues some had with OCZ SSDs...I just think too many have unfairly written off the entire brand as a result compared to other manufacturers. Even if theirs were truly more failure-prone overall than, say, Samsung or Corsair (which I still am not convinced is actually the case...but I don't have actual numbers, of course).

I also discounted the negative press about OCZ reliability, and went ahead and bought a Vertex 4 when it was the flagship drive, doing a clean install of Windows 7, updated the firmware to the latest version, and it worked great - for 15 days, then it died while my system was idling in front of me, just blue screened and shut down, never to be recognized again (in Windows or BIOS). When I returned it (after trying everything I could), the salesman told me that most of the ones they sold had been returned, and pointed me towards the Crucial M4 (as being the most reliable), and it's been smooth sailing ever since. No, it's not a speed demon, but the new Crucial M500 is (early testing indicates that it beats the Vector in several bench marks and real world tests), and should be even more reliable than the M4. The M500 also comes in a 960 GB size for only $600.
