82C on Haswell mobile CPU, 91C on GTX780M. Is this too hot or just fine?

I have recently bought a GT70 Haswell/GTX780M laptop.

I feel that the laptop runs a little hot and I have also witnessed artifacting on a couple of occasions and what seems like temp related graphical glitches on another.

From just one 3DMark benchmark, I getting 91C on the GPU and 82 C on the CPU.

From the years I have owned and overclocked desktop CPUs and GPUs, these sort of temps are somehow ingrained in my unconscious mind as not just being too hot and thus damaging to the cores, but totally beyond the pale of acceptability.

Over on a laptop centred forum however, these temperatures are being hailed as just fine. This is the first time I am seeing these kinds of temps being viewed as acceptable and perfectly 'normal'.

Any of you knowledgeable types out there got anything to say on this matter?

It is a laptop. For laptop CPU it is normal to have temps over 80C. GPU is a bit high but still acceptable. Get a cooling pad if you want better temps.

For a new laptop those temps are high. The artifacting is definitely a concern. For something new I wouldn't bother with trying any kind of fix other than getting a replacement.

So do laptop users just have to accept that their equipment will degenerate much faster than the desktop equivalents? I guess this must be part of the unspoken deal when buying a laptop.

Yep. Get a cooling fan dock arrangement.

Laptop chips are normally designed to run hotter. Even direct comparison chips

Desktop chip is rated for 71.3C and the mobile is rated for 100C.

'Designed' to run hotter, or arbitrarily 'designated' as hotter running?

As far as I am aware, a mobile version of a chip is simply an underclocked undervolted version of its desktop counterpart. Perhaps I am wrong, but if I am right, how is heat going to affect one differently from the other......

.........unless it really is just part of the unspoken deal, that laptop performance degrades much quicker than desktop performance.

They are designed with the ability to run at a higher temp. That is done along with dropping the TDP by lowering the voltage and clock speed allowing it to be stable and sustainable at higher temps.

Make sure that when you test it the surface you place it on is smooth like a table and that the vent has at least 1 meter (3ft) clearance from any obstruction, you want the air to flow. Be mindful of room temperature too, maybe test it at night. If it's still that hot then wow, those are intimidating temperatures.

3 foot clearance to your laptop? You only need a few centimetres clearance.
