That benchmark looks like BS,

considering Nvidia's GPUs are still miles ahead in tessellation performance. When looking at Tess bench from Microsoft anyway so pure tessellation Nvidia still has more grunt.

Perhaps that graph looked different to me, but it shows the 290x is 5FPS faster than Titan, and 10 faster than the 780....

Physx On vs 290 being off scroll down to Apples vs Apples its 2 fucking FPS at the same resolution and settings.

As for no SSAA yes because everyone plays games that run like shit with a minimum that regularly drops to unplayable levels On that graph posted i can count at least 12 occassions where the 290X drops to unplayable rate many times it happens back to back thus unplayable. Fun to look at but worthless as a comparison because I don't know anyone that plays games at unplayable settings just for Lulz.

Stock versus stock a R9 290X is the better card in terms of raw performance versus GTX 780
Problem is stock 290X is a bit poo as it's cooler is shittingly loud and therefore, not pleasant.
Custom cooled 290X - different kettle of fish. I'd love to see the stats on one of those.
Problem is GTX 780Ti might have some surprises. But Nvidia are being arseholes with it's pricing.

In summary.... If you like AMD you're happy because your camps card is now up there toe to toe with a ludicrously priced Nvidia card (Titan). Unless you like noise though you might want to wait for some custom cooling or get some water going.
If you like Nvidia - hey - it just got cheaper. Your very overclockable 780 matches the hot and loud 290X. And your hideously expensive Titan, well, nothing to upgrade over yet.

Everybody gains.

But if you want a true winner we need a meta analysis of performance per clock versus price versus power efficiency versus noise. At the moment AMD wins on pricing metric but loses on power metric. Nvidia loses on pricing but wins on power. They tie on performance.

Your conclusion was correct at the time of the R9 290X launch, but with the GTX 780 at $499 I don't see any reason for the mass market (people who don't modify cards, just insert and turn on) to get a reference 290X anymore. Without modification of the card NVidia beats it on almost all levels. This may change when custom 290X's hit the market, but for now only version of the 290X available has limited appeal due to its $549 price and the reference cooler.

AMD has some time to modify its product to make it more competitive (bundles, lower price, etc.), but if the company does nothing before the 780Ti launch I suspect all those reviews will be pretty harsh on AMD (after all, even if it doesn't directly compete on price, it is the product closest in price to the 780Ti).

I'd seriously love to get some more titans at reasonable prices, they make for awesome cuda computing parts, I'll probably switch to 290x on gaming rig to move over the ones I have to workplace.

Perhaps all along AMD knew that Nvidia would drop their 780, and that they would need to end up dropping their prices of the 290/x. After all, 270x is $200, 280x is $300, and maybe they were shooting for a settling of their 290/x ~$400. (the 7970 went through a similar trend)

Might be wishful thinking, but I would certainly fancy a 290/x at that price.

I think they will keep it. Titan is effectively dead to the masses, so $699 is the new halo bracket. With a little overclocking, there's probably hardly any difference between a 780 and 780Ti, unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat, or start gimping 780 cards with lesser vrm / cooling / fans like they did to the 570 cards.

I think a 290 non x would be a better buy, and non reference of course. Depending on my bracket it's that one or a 280X matrix.

I think they will keep it. Titan is effectively dead to the masses, so $699 is the new halo bracket. With a little overclocking, there's probably hardly any difference between a 780 and 780Ti, unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat, or start gimping 780 cards with lesser vrm / cooling / fans like they did to the 570 cards.

The reason i see them lowering the $700 is the non reference 290X, according to reviews (oc 290X) i assume they will be on par, and having nvidia lowered 780 to $500, of course amd is lowering 290x stock to $500(just like 680 vs 7970) if not less. So, a non reference 290X will have an mrsp of $550(speculation), will be quiet, good temps, and $150 cheaper than 780Ti.
And all of that is not taking in to account that 290 vanilla presumably has the exact same performance as the gtx 780 and will cost between $400 ~ $450 stock versions (again a non reference could even overtake a stock 290X). That's a lot of speculation but not far from reality, after seing what the 290x can do.
