I think that Wizzards assessment is right: 290 + aftermarket cooler seems to be the way to go for the budget conscious.

Price is steep, but maybe not so steep if you factor in overclocking. The reference 290X almost doesn't overclock because of the massive heat output. The 780 Ti on the other hand overclocks very well, so comparing overclocked results, it pulls ahead by quite a margin. It's still not worth 700$ though, I think realistically speaking it should be priced at 625 - 650$. But obviously for being the single GPU "king", it can take a bit of a price premium.

Not that I can afford any of the graphics cards in this range, but a bit of price war is always great.

But im not replacing my GTX670 (@ 1080p) until I get a 4K screen.

290X & 780Ti imo still aren't a perfect fit @ 4K res...

I bet late 2014/2015 will be the boom for ultra resolution.

Very impressive to be honest, I too didn't think they would quite acheive this performance, whats exciting for me now is to see what the non reference 290X's can do, can a non reference overclocked version of the 290X close a 8% gap across resolutions, if it can then even better for all of us because we will see even cheaper overclocked 780Ti's!

Great card, it does everything what the reference 290x cannot. Although I still gonna buy the Radeon 290x, but with custom cooler. Than I believe I have GTX780ti performance or more for cheaper.

I think you might be up to something, lets wait for retail reviews and we'll see. As it stands I think the price for my second GTX 780 Classified is nigh, $580, I think that would hit the spot nicely for $120 less. Classy's in Sli woohoo!!

AMD cards throttle in Furmark, too. These numbers are mostly to provide an idea what kind of PSU will be good enough, worst case.

Got to say I didn't think an extra SMX and bump in clocks would be that impressive. Power is what takes me aback! Almost like they're using binned chips with the best efficiency that originally went to only Tesla professional products. Given maturity of the process and that most big customer for professional side stuff has been realized, can Nvidia now allocate some chips to this venue?

I'd think they know they won't fulfill big numbers on this, as Titan and GTX780 has already captured their a biggest volume. While those who had stepped-up for those now can't really sell a Titan/780 and see much ROI to make the switch justifiable. This GTX780Ti is more a "see what we could've done", they don't see or need this as a big mover, more justly basking in what Kepler had on tap verse the GNC.

Here's the question will Nvidia release a 10-11 SMX part that would compete with the R9 290at $400, or do they just absorb anything that unworthy as the price of GK110 production? I would think there still would be large a volume of geldings that fall below the standard 780 12-SMX's and how well might those do perf/watt against a R9 290?

I, too, suspect that this is the case. Good for the customer. On the other hand, ASIC quality on my sample came back with around 75%, so nothing magical there.

Nice card, and I am guessing a power plane may be the respin B1, getting more stable power to all the die helps reduce thermal load and voltage droop, and thus power consumption.


I await a GSync review too, I may switch camps!!

It was never intended to do so. IMHO it is great card, considering it has more transistors than competitor card yet it produce less heat that is impressive. If nothing else it may force AMD to starts thinking about bundle more games with R9 series graphics cards so it will be win win situation for us customers.

Does nvidia have any plan to reduce the price of gtx 780 to $399 to counter 290 ? If so, 780SLI for $100 extra will be a much better deal than this card. I can only hope.

Amazing card, but I see no point to pricing it $699. An aftermarket cooler would make R9 290X faster and the final price would be still 50~75$ lower.

699$ should be the price for top cooled and oveclocked versions of GTX 780 Ti, like MSI Lightning or Asus Matrix.
