Overclocking ATI Cards under Linux

As I don't use Linux at all I found this article to be pretty informative for the penguin people among us. Its all about overclocking graphics cards with ATI chips and the new tool the people at Phoronix are using: ATIpower. It is compatible to the X1000 chip family where the older Rovclock still capitulates.

At least its a starting point for ocing your comp. I may try an Ubuntu install of linux and give this a shot.

if you've got an ATI, don't bother. it's more trouble than it's worth.

though I guess if you'd like super-fast 2D acceleration, feel free! :p

ATi offers a Linux driver with 3D acceleration. You underestimate ATi and the penguin. ;)

If you use the ATI fglrx drivers, everything is fine, you just have to manually configure you xorg.conf file most of the time if it's giving you troubles.

You're right on that, but as i said, all you have to do 9/10 times, is properly edit xorg.conf. The other 1/10, you're usually missing a package somewhere.

bah -- nobody should have to edit the xorg.conf file directly. ATI needs to fix their Linux drivers! I've always loved ATI, but it's ridiculous that I can mess around with xorg.conf for hours and nothing works, yet an nvidia card works right out of the box with Linux.
