ASUS Eee Box Sheds its Fans

The new Eee Box EB1037 from ASUS is the company's first completely fan-less nettop in the series. It's part of the company's new 2014 Eee PC series, and offers an impressive new hardware feature-set, compared to its humble Atom N270 beginnings.

The EB1037 runs an Intel Celeron J1900 SoC, with a quad-core x86-64 CPU clocked at 2.42 GHz; up to 8 GB of DDR3 memory, NVIDIA GeForce GT 820M graphics with 512 MB dedicated memory, HDD options ranging from 320 GB to 1 TB, and SSD options ranging between 64 GB and 128 GB. On the connectivity front, you get a 4-in-1 card reader, two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and display outputs that include HDMI and D-Sub. Prices start at 299€.



Update (7th Feb, 2014): It turns out that the EeeBox EB1037 does indeed have a small fan over the CPU+PCH combination block, ASUS clarified.

But why in heaven does it feature 1 HDMI and 1 VGA, come on!

An generally speaking, why are there no USB 3 ports with full USB 2 compatibilty, so we can get rid of having 2 kind of ports!?!?!? STONE AGE!!!! Also increidible, yesterday I was in a big computer warehouse: and behold! 90% of all pendrives were USB2 and there were NO USB3 HUBS!!!!!! WTF??????

It is an analog and a digital connection. DVI ports are big, so HDMI makes sense. If you need DVI, buy an HDMI to DVI cable or adapter.

The issue isn't really compatiblity, though some OS installers have issues with USB3.0, the real issue is USB3.0 ports are more expensive than USB2.0. This is a SoC processor, and it has 4 USB2.0 Ports and 1 USB3.0 port all on the same silicon. And space wise on the silicon, the 4 USB2.0 ports take up the same space as a single USB3.0 port. Then on top of that, they had to include a USB3.0 switch on the systemboard to split the single USB3.0 port into the two for this system.
