G.Skill sent me a fancy new memory kit with huge capabilities, both in size and for overclocking! Clocking in at a normal 1600 MHz, but with CAS 7, the G.Skill F3-1600C7Q-32GTX's sticks aren't average, and their red and black tridents are nearly the perfect match for any watercooled and overclocked build.

Does the price of the kit count as a potential negative?? Or not because all of the other quad channel kits sell for the same price?

  • Low 1600 MHz speed means this kit is better for Intel-based systems (AMD systems use 1866 or 2133 MHz by default), but it is capable on all just the same.

I would've thought this to be the other way around.

Intel systems support 1600 MHz natively, except for IVB-E, which gets 1866 MHz.

I know memory performance is a bit lacking on AMD...we all do, so getting the highest speed an AMD APU supports should be a priority for such builds, and this kit is a bit short of that. My particular kit can OC to those speeds, no problem....but I cannot say that every kit will.

AMD CPUs (AM2 and up) seem to love tighter timings compared to higher clocks for memory.

Their APUs, however seem to be the opposite, favoring higher frequencies, but at stock timings.

Rated DDR3-1600 @ CL7 but can do DDR3-2400 @ CL10? That's f'n impressive, especially for 8GB sticks.

@cadaveca can these do DDR-1600 @ CL6? I see a lot of reviews that try to push the speed up, but I'm more interested in seeing how low the latencies can go...

Good review. Glad to see GSkill still keeping to low cas timings.

Does anyone know what is the discernible difference between the RipjawsX or TridentX ?

It is really hard to say. There will be some sticks were the difference is only the heatspreader, and maybe and SPD. On the SPD side of things, the SPD on these sticks is optimized with Haswell....RipJawsX kits...might be optimized for other platforms. Gotta really take it on a kit-by-kit basis, I guess.

Even 2133mhz Vs 2400mhz 10fps difference

Do keep in mind that's with the lowest settings possible, which makes it more sensitive to memory differences.

I couldn't get CAS 6 to boot on the test system, unfortunately, even with increased voltage. I am not 100% sure whether that is due to the sticks, or to the board/BIOS....so the best I can say is that G.Skill did a good job giving us the most they could with this kit.

Did you try 1T command rate? No performance difference, unstable or didnt even boot?

Out of oldschool habbits, if I dont get 1T to run, I switch ram :D

Yes, 1T works up to 2133 MHz, after that, Intel IMCs seem to prefer 2T for long-term stability with this kit.

However, I only tested that on SKT2011.... SKT 1155 or 1150 will ALWAYS have a hard time with 1T with four sticks, although 1600 MHz can work OK.

Last week I finally bought an AM3+ board. I wasn't quite sure what ram I wanted. Well I saw this review today and it sold me on the TridentX. I bought an 8g kit of the 2400mhz, 10-12-12-31 G.SKILL TridentX. Damn this ram looks good!

Dunno, I guess it depends on the mobo too. I have 4x4Gb Lga2011 kit and it runs fine, atm OC'ed from 2133mhz CL9 to 2400mhz CL10 1T

But I have "only" 16gb, 32gb is also max mobo ram capacity and this could probably limit it as well.

A little sideways here, but I am liking my G.Skill Trident X kit. My 965 Deneb is holding it back at 1333, but that will change with a FX cpu or Kaveri cpu and board. :rockout:

I still have G Skill PI Series 4GB 2200 CL7 Hz and I have to say that they are much more efficient just the volume is not as high but there is apparently a major problem because the density transfer stops preformens.
