I've been looking at Elite as well, but it's $150 to get into beta. The Kickstarter says the game will be ready Mar 2014. I don't know if they are on schedule, but if they are then I'll be picking this up along with SC. It has Oculus Rift support as well. Oh and thanks for the heads up on Limit Theory, I'll have to look into it as well. I've been playing this small Oculus Rift demo called "Space Flight VR" and it's pretty good so far.

the full game is like ~$50
I didn't pay for beta or alpha access. it's not worth it for me.
I just pledged for the final game.

If anyone is interested I plan to buy just bought Darkfield-Alpha today. It started out as an Oculus Rift only game, but has grown pretty fast, and now it has regular monitor support alone with TrackIR support. It's received the Steam Greenlight. It's only $15 and you get a steam key when it's released on steam if you pre-order from their site. It's in Alpha 4.0a currently. You can set up a Dedicated server! I'll be setting one up on my T1's soon I hope.

EDIT: OH and I can't believe nobody liked my "The last starfighter" reference!... I feel a disturbance in the force!... My wife disappointed me last week when she told me she never seen Goonies.... Now you guys haven't seen The last Starfighter?... I feel really old now.. lol Oh yea and @Easy Rhino it has Linux support! along with Mac, and Windows.

Alpha4 is the biggest update so far. We added many new features, such as new weapons, new ships and a loadout system. If you encounter any bugs (which is very likely), please let us know .

*Instructions for hosting a server:
When hosting a (dedicated) server, make sure your router is setup to forward TCP/UDP port 25000.

To start a dedicated server, open Darkfield.exe with the additional arguments “-batchmode dedicated [port] [number of bots] [useNAT/dontuseNAT], e.g.:
“Darkfield.exe –batchmode dedicated 25000 16 useNAT”

I hopped back into Eve a bit and have been reliving the old-school glory that is Privateer. Once in a while, I still get on MWO, PoE, and finally beat Bioshock Infinite and am moving on to DarkSiders II (everybody needs a good 1P story now and then, am I right?).

You could try X3 Albion Prelude or Terran Conflict, its pretty decent and usually around $3-5.

I literally just completed Freelancer again, only this time I carried on and got friendly with the Corsairs faction and bought the most powerful ship in game, the Titan, and went througjut every system looking for classified weapons you can only find by discovering shipwrecks in VERY far away locations in certain systems. Got myself 4, sold the rest to afford the Titan and now I pretty much don't know what to do. Waiting on Star Citizen dogfight module, and waiting to get my hands on Elite too.
On the side I've kickstarted Planets^3 as well for some casual time in future. Besides that I'm looking for a decent game like freelancer to fill my time in story mode gaming. Got myself into Betrayer too, but that's a relatively short indie game. Really craving something like freelancer these days. Replaying it was fun, but a little more expansion might be nice. I also bought early access into Starpoint Gemini II as it certainly has the potential, but I tend not to play early access games too much as they are lacking in many ways.
That being said I can thoroughly recommend Starpoint Gemini II for those who want a Freelancer crossed with X3 and Albion (which I own the GOTY edition of). The new X Rebirth is terrible as said above, broken as hell. By the time it's fixed SC and Elite will be done and out anyway.

IF nothing comes up I hope to get my package this weekend even if I have to get the $45 package. Oh and I played Darkfield VR last night and it's pretty good so far. The biggest thing so far is a lot of the textures are not done, but I read on their forum the next alpha which is very close to release will have a lot more textures. Only thing right now with textures is stuff in space.. example: asteroids, and planets. Stuff with out Textures are the ships and inside the hanger. They are building their own graphics engine, and so far it looks good... But it's no SC.

I've been playing Planetary Annihilation Gamma as it's been loads of fun, then for space-sim action, Evochron Mercenary and X3 Albion. I prefer Evochron. I must admit there's also been some C&C Tiberian Sun and Diablo 2 as well.

Plenty of great classics to hold me over. Then when the 12yo wants to play, we do MP matches of SupCom2. Been a great time! Looking forward to this title eventually providing more...but i have plenty to keep me busy until it does. It took years for PA to get rolling, and now to me it's amazing. I have no doubts SC will be too!
