One of our friends has literally become a douche and a dick since he started playing DayZ all the time.
He used to be quite considerate and generous, you know the sharing type? Now he's moody, selfish and keeps to himself.

When we finally do get him out, we can't even goto Taco Bell without him pushing us out of the way to hoard all the hot sauce, like it's the last fu**ing food source on earth.
I joked once that we should pull over at this army surplus store and and stock up for the apocalypse, everyone else laughed, but he just stared coldly out the window plotting and planning his survival.

I bought the game 2 days ago. At first I was like whooooa, which quickly turned into OH WHAT THE FUCK....
The potential is HUGE.
But despite being an alpha, some of the bugs are pretty nasty.
You'd think that zombies wouldn't kill you through walls, jump right through your character, and wouldn't take 10 hits to kill (9 of which won't register) after several months of after (pre)release, but apparently something you bump into virtually every 10 steps doesn't have any bugfixing priority at all
Sound is bugged as hell, I'd run through a forest and hear cans of soda opening and zombies screaming when it's only me in 2km radius.
Performance is completely pathetic, but hopefully the new engine (or the upcoming modifications to it) will make things better.

It was certainly an experience, and I will play it, but it will take a few more versions before I try again. I definitely don't regret buying it though.

To be fair, I've been playing the mod since alpha and I still think the standalone is pretty shit. I think a lot of you are looking at it through rose coloured glasses, imaging everything that it can be when its finished and are ignoring what it is now. I don't doubt it will be amazing once finished, but its maybe years away from that happening

Whatever ails them now is not down specifically to a lack of funds or creativity or skill etc.etc.
It seems like its simply just not turned out as planned and the cross over to a stand alone system is way behind schedule.

I don't believe it was ever destined for greatness and part of me wishes they'd abandon it and let it die out naturally.

Objectively speaking it's an advancement in the evolution of socially driven games, and as a concept/theory it's awesome - but then so again is Utopia - add in human nature and it all falls to shit.
People are naive going in and then come out thinking it's REALLY the game's fault that they had a shitty experience.

It's not shitty because people are shitty. The mod was great, and there was plenty to do and a goal in some sort to have a vehicle and build a camp and keep it. In the standalone there is literally nothing to do after you get a few weapons except kill people and take people hostage and screw with them. Literally, nothing to do. So what do you expect, people to just run around and do literally nothing? The game has nothing. It's a shell of what the mod was currently.

I started playing the mod shortly after it came out, summer of 2012? I guess. I've got 500+ hours in it, and by far it is superior to the standalone. I haven't gone back to it as of late because it seems like the core is kind of gone and now there are all these little mod things for it that kind of take away what it was in the beginning. I played a lot on a server that was 600+ vehicles + base building on Lingor Island, best map IMO, and I felt the extra cars (though maybe not that many) made it more realistic and the base building was awesome at that time on that server because it was custom built. Then Epoch came along, etc. You're right, people are looking at what it is going to be - but the problem is the team is focusing on shit we don't really care about, like helmets and fucking beans when we just want some goddamn vehicles for instance. New towns great. Enter into almost every building great. Better engine optimization great. Fifty different shades of helmet = retarded. No hint of a vehicle in the game = retarded.

Aren't they basically redoing the mod from scratch (well, not entirely, but almost) on different engine and other tech? No shit the SA is worse at the moment, it's not even feature complete, with lots of expected bugs. I don't think it's fair to compare the two until SA is at least in beta.

Yeah, that's all true... They're just taking a really long time. Literally nothing seemed to get done the first year of them making the standalone.

Zombie pathing was "fixed" two patches ago. It's much better than it was, though they can get through doors sometimes. The last "devblog" or whatever they started talking about vehicles, so I guess those might be coming soon finally.

Either way, it's a pretty shitty engine that has it's nuances but you get used to it. I'm more looking forward to DX11 in this game.. and hopefully they get controls more functional. Like when you hit the jump button, you should jump instead of waiting for the damn server to realize you're jumping and then you jump.

Way more is being done on server than needed. Like what the shit is the black screen with "Receiving..." message everytime I change any of the graphical settings? Just wtf? :-O
Jumping doesn't even work, I keep spamming the key and nothing happens, and then I do the walking over fence animation. Trying to jump when standing still simply doesn't do anything, so I can't get on ~30cm tall ramp around a building. Wtf, lol.

I also hope they will look at the key assignments settings and remove all the useless crap that doesn't do anything. Some of the stuff looks like it doesn't even belong in the game.

I am talking about DayZ in it's entirety - mod or stand alone. Moving to a stand alone was just unnecessary.
It's had it's spotlight and subsequently it's raised interest in more socially involved gaming and has influenced the field of games development, which is great.

Though it's time to move past it - let the idea be evolved by someone else for some other project.

You bought the game 3 days ago and instantly found bugs. This is a game based on a mod using roughly the same engine as the mod (just the 2.0 version of it). It's also been released as a "beta" for what over a year now?

The dev team mismanaged the mod development so for anyone who's been around it's no real surprise how much of a cluster the standalone has been.

No shit I found bugs, it's an alpha. Not beta. Get your facts straight. There's a huge difference between those. Alpha versions rarely get released in public.
You're exactly right in that it's BASED on the mod.
I guess most of the whining and crap talking about how shit the team is and how a full version should had been released 5 months ago comes from the conclusion they just took the mod and started modding it officially in Bohemia Interactive offices. Seeing how the amount of features changed since the launch of the alpha, I think it's safe to assume they started almost from scratch. Developing games takes shit ton of time. Some of the more complex ones easily take 5-6 years. I'm actually impressed with what they managed to do in what, 1,5 years? And the team isn't exactly huge either.
