NVIDIA announced Game24, a worldwide, multinational event spanning 24 hours, celebrating PC gaming. Scheduled for 18th September, 2014, The event will be held across seven locations around the world, and live-streams of each will be broadcast the world over. NVIDIA didn't put out specifics about the event, but we're guessing it will be full of game developer interactions (with the gamers), multiplayer gaming events on NVIDIA-powered gaming PCs, and the odd next-generation high-end GPU launch (GeForce GTX 980, GTX 970). You can pick up any of the event's streams, and RSVP for events near you, on this page.

980 and 970? so does this mean they're skipping the 8xx series? or is it going to be an OEM only series (the 8xx)?

Well according to sources it sounds as though they are completely skipping 800 (Minus OEM and the mobile lineup) in favor of shooting straight for a new naming scheme most likely trying to put space between the 7XX series so that this can sound much more like a huge step up.

Yeah, it is. It will be a sale booster for them, nothing else. The masses will think it's a momentous upgrade, and promptly think 770, 780 and 780Ti are peasant cards without any performance, and buy, buy, buy....unaware that the top-line models they are buying aren't even the top end Maxwell chip, since GM210 doesn't even have a glimpse on the horizon yet.

Yay, expect more of the rehashed old stuff as "new". I hate it when they do that, be it AMD or NVIDIA. It's lazy and kills the progression. Even actual new high end doesn't have tobe particularly awesome if you just re-use old cards for a "current" mid end...

LoL and Dota 2 are not the cause of this. I rather play the same map over and over again and only pay for what I like, than pay a premium price each year for a shinier version of the same content of the so called triple A titles or pay full price for some bad console port.

If anything, triple A gaming is the death of triple A gaming.

And why do you think these so called AAA games even exist? It's because of consoles and not PC. They can sell CoD over and over each year and not make it any cheaper at all for friggin 5 years just because mindless butterfingered console users buy it every year. If it was just PC to sell to, they'd quickly lose the userbase. PC users are in general far more critical than console users. Sure there are exceptions, but they are rather rare...

The real AAA games like System Shock 2, Deus Ex 1 and Human Revolution etc, such games often form a cult userbase that is worshiping them and the other 90% rest simply forgets about them or they don't even bother with them because they are too immersive and they require way too much time investment. On the other hand they can grind WoW month after month. Well, sometimes i just don't understand some people...

I agree with you except that WoW is the most time consuming game I ever played. I spent a lot of time reading guides instead of playing, not to mention the endless grinding. It's addiction what causes someone to do this and the regrets only come after you quit. Since then I like my games simpler so I can spend more time enjoying them and give my mind some rest. I don't mind the occasional console ports, I enjoyed Assassin's Creed IV and Far Cry 3 for as long as the campaign lasted but they are not getting my money. Most of my gaming has been Battlefield 4 this year at 200 hours, online gaming has a lot of replay value.

I was just comparing for example "time consuming" Deus Ex that requires player to infest a lot more time into gameplay itself. But most find this annoying since they just want to play. But then they don't mind repetative grinding in WoW for months. One of the reasons i've stopped playing MMO games altogether. You keep playing them forever, but when you look back you haven't really achieved anything. You basically just thrown away that time. But if you play Deus Ex for ages, look into every box and hole, carefully invest skill points and try to find out as much as possible about the story, you sort of experience a high quality product.

Oh nooo, I think you might have misunderstood. They are not rebadging the 7 series, they are merely skipping the 8 series except for mobile (which has always been equivalent to the previous generation desktop anyway). Average consumer will think "Oh my, they are on 9 series already, where have I been? I must go buy a card right away!"

The GeForce 800M Series is a family of graphics processing units by Nvidia for laptop PCs.[3] It consists of rebrands of mobile versions of the GeForce 700 series[3] and some newer chips that are lower end compared to the rebrands.

The GeForce 800 series name was originally planned to be used for both desktop and mobile chips based on the Maxwell microarchitecture (GM-codenamed chips), named after the Scottish theoretical physicist James Clerk Maxwell, which was previously introduced into the GeForce 700 series in the GTX 750 and GTX 750 Ti, released on February 18, 2014.[4] However, due to the fact that mobile GPUs under the GeForce 800M series have already been released using the Kepler architecture, Nvidia decided to rename its GeForce 800 series desktop GPUs as the GeForce 900 series.

@Jurassic1024- That is a very good rundown, however...you are aware arent you that Nvidia's mobile GPU have almost always merely been the equivalent of the previous desktop GPU's, right?
They could have done the same thing this time, as they have always had cards with the same number, but the mobiles ending with an "m", and older architecture and capabilities. So. Their explanation doesnt make alot of sense.
