Dell announced the P2416D, a 24-inch monitor featuring WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) native resolution. Based on an IPS panel, the monitor offers 99% coverage of sRGB palette, and wide viewing angles, although the company didn't specify them. The monitor takes input from DisplayPort 1.2 (required for 2560 x 1440 @ 60 Hz), HDMI 1.4 (native resolution at 30 Hz), and D-Sub (lower than native resolution). Other features include a 4-port USB 2.0 hub, and a stand that allows tilt and height adjustments. Backed by a 3-year warranty, the P2416D will be priced at US $369.99, when it hits the stores, later this month.

If dell brings out an ultrasharp model with IPS panel then I am interested in getting rid of 24" 1080p monitor in favour of a 24" 1440p monitors.

HDMI 1.4 can support 4K at 30Hz, so why not 1440p at 60Hz?

2560 x 1440 @ 60 Hz requires 11.6 Gbps, and HDMI 1.4 only has 10.24 Gbps bandwidth. When you add the various bus overheads, the effective bandwidth offered by HDMI 1.4 is even lower. So you can't do 1440p @ 60 Hz.

im so confused by these bandwith needs :(

http://www.geeks3d.com/20141202/tested-geforce-gtx-970-and-4k-60hz-on-hdmi-2-0/

To display a 4k resolution at 60Hz, the video interface (HDMI, DisplayPort) needs to transfert 12Gbits/second of data:

– bit_per_channel = 8
– num_channels = 3 (RGB)
– resolution = 3840 * 2160
– 60Hz = 60 times per second
– bandwidth = 3840 * 2160 * 8 * 3 * 60
bandwidth 4k@60Hz = 11.94 Gbits/sec
bandwidth 4k@30Hz = 5.97 Gbits/sec

Here is a quick recap of HDMI and DisplayPort (DP) bandwidths:

  • HDMI 1.2: up to 4.95 Gbits/sec
  • HDMI 1.4: up to 10.2 Gbits/sec
  • HDMI 2.0: up to 18.0 Gbits/sec
  • DisplayPort 1.2: 17.28 Gbit/sec
  • DisplayPort 1.3: 32.4 Gbit/sec

So 2560x1440 @ 60 requires 11.6 Gbps
and 3840x2160 @ 60 requires 11.94 Gbps? only 0.34 Gbps more?

Ehh, 1440p@60Hz should work over hdmi just fine. Max pixel clock in spec has been 340MHz from hdmi spec 1.3-1.4b, and 1440p@60Hz has pixel clock of 312.25 MHz. If my memory serves me right: if that did not work right a way, you should use reduced blank which lowers pixel clock to 241.5 MHz.

I have this monitor and am running it at full resolution 60Hz
