I reinstalled Windows and now I can't get the game to work. The stupid installer apparently has no functionality to recognize existing files, and when I downloaded the Social club program and started it, it downloaded a patch and then said the game was not installed and to piss off.
Help! What do I do?

If you have the retail DVD version run the installer from that, and tell it to install into the directory GTAV is already in. There is no repair option, but it should not reinstall the entire game. For me what I did this it asked for DVDs 1, 5, and 7. It took about 2 minutes to do this, and it fixed the game is not installed error.

I guess I'm insane then, I prefer a disc install I can use 20 years from now it I want. I cant use any fof the games I bought on steam last year, and Steam support could not figure out the problem that prevents it and gave up. I can use all of the games I bought on disc last year.

PS
If you want to discuss Steam use PM this thread is not the place for it.

I'm also insane, I did it to have a quicker install, it would take a full day for me to download 65 GB ... or to be exact because I want to calculate this now ... I can download 1.4 MB per second, in a minute that's 84 MB, in an hour that's 5 GB, for a full download that's 13 hours ...

No one will be using DVDs 20 years from now. That would be like building a rig and putting in a 5 1/4 inch floppy disk drive.

You could do that if you wanted to, and that is the point. No one is using those disks now, but again that is not the point.

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
I had the white glitch error, where it would only run in safe mode, and as I turned on Tessellation and other things it would start to glitch out. Fixed it with scan disk on my SSD, I believe the cache had corrupt textures from me screwing around with alt-tabbing out of the game overnight, and the kids watching netflix and other stuff.

Also having X16 bandwidth makes a huge difference to this game opposed to X8, it loads terrain faster.

LOL, you sure of that? I'm far from convinced that any or all of the digital providers will be around 20 years from now. Anyway, I buy the DVD version of games whenever possible because that initial install goes much more quickly than downloading (which usually only leaves a small download to be had after), and also for reinstall purposes for when/if my cable provider starts a monthly cap on downloads.

If you're using Steam, you can just drag the entire GTA V folder from "steamapps > common" to the Steam folder on the new drive. Once you start Steam it should just sort itself out.

Not necessarily. Shouldn't it just download those files that it couldn't verify? You can do it manually, or you can just hit play, and Steam is usually really good about just downloading what it needs to play the game again and register the new game location in Windows. Manual is done by verifying game cache under the game properties.

Not saying that there won't be some form of physical media for games 20 years from now but imo it won't be DVDs. Games are getting too big to make it practical. A DVD holds around 5 GB of data. If the developer of Star Citizen is correct about the 100 GB size of their game then that's around 20 DVDs. I understand that compression will reduce that some but I think I saw someone on this thread say that GTA V was already 7 DVDs and then a 5 GB download after that.

It is getting ridiculous, I'll give you that! I've got several games that need 5 DVD's, but GTA V is King of the DVD's now. Don't think it will be the last though to need 7 or more.

Nah you shouldn't have to download much of anything if you're just copying all of the data from one drive to another. On the new drive you may want to make a "Steam Library" folder and put things in there. I did forget that GTA V saves things in other areas that you'll want to transfer over.

-"User Folder" > AppData > Local > Rockstar Games
-My Documents > Rockstar games

I am trying as you have suggested and I am getting a "steam is having trouble connecting to the stream servers " error.......more than likely me so Im not too concerned at the moment and i am in no hurry.

Anyway, had a read and found this, which sounds a bit different to what you are suggesting

10 obscure Steam features that can power up your PC gaming

Steam in-home streaming lets you play even graphically intense games on technologically crappy PCs and Windows tablets. It uses the power of your main gaming rig to actually run games, and then streams the game in Netflix-like fashion to your secondary PC. Think of it as OnLive for your Steam collection, but only on your home network. I use it to play games on my cheap laptop from my couch or bed almost daily, and my colleague Hayden Dingman leveraged the feature’s power to play Assassin’s Creed IV on an ancient 2006 MacBook.
Activating Steam in-home streaming is easy: Just log on to Steam on your laptop while your gaming PC is connected to the same network and also running Steam. A pop-up notification will let you know the two machines are aware of each other and a new “Stream” option will appear in your library for games installed on your primary PC. There are some caveats and nuances—most involve balancing your network connection and graphics settings—which you can read all about in PCWorld’s guide to Steam in-home streaming.

i didnt read anymore but the others are here.

After finishing this game it left me kind of, meh, wondering if it's even worth it to fill out the 100% complete requirements and replay missions to get gold or try the alternate options in some of them. Just didn't seem to have the epic missions GTA IV did.

It's also slow and awkward in movement and gunplay. It feels downright geriatric compared to GTA IV and Max Payne 3. In GTA IV's Three Leaf Clover heist, the swift running pace you can use between battle points is very reminiscent of the movie it's derived from, Heat.

I really thought a lot of the negative comments seemed overblown, esp when I read the heists would be planned and prepared for with tiered missions, and have optional ways of doing them, but it really doesn't add to the feel of satisfaction for me. I'd rather the heists themselves just be better.

My first moments of worry were way back when a lot of the post launch user comments indicated it was kinda, well, boring to play compared to other titles in the franchise, and now I see why many said that. It's as if most playing and raving about it are speaking of the mp vs sp.

So I went in a bit skeptical, but I never thought after finishing them I'd be more inclined to replay titles like The Evil Within and The Old Blood. GTA V plays like a dysfunctional soap opera with Michael and Trevor constantly bitching, while Franklin plays referee, and most of the missions are so casual it's as if they're an equal alternative to bingo.

You know when some of your more enjoyable moments are things you ad lib, like doing Josh's real estate mission with a mt bike, bunny hopping and natural dirt ramp jumping obstacles between the houses, there's something wrong. Add to that two whole years extra development time for the PC version, with a very buggy condition at launch, much of which STILL hasn't been fixed, and I have to wonder why this title netted them such huge profits.

I guess it's that a lot of people have "Rockstar on the brain", as if everything they do is golden. I used to be one of them, not anymore. The only thing they can redeem themselves with at this point as far as I'm concerned is a Max Payne 4 that does justice to it's predecessor, because apparently GTA has gone the common way of graphics over gameplay.

Anyone else having problems with vehicle pop in online? I was driving and all of a sudden a car materialised right in front of me and i crashed. Other times they start to load in as they are turning. It can't be that i'm playing with shitty connection players as in a private game it's the same. Lots of loading problems online for me. Can't be my system, games on an SSD and the game runs fine in singleplayer, i also have a fiber connection which is fine for any other game.

Just linked both pcs up through Steam community, just meant inputting a code they emailed to me, it is now installing GTA V on ThugXeon which it estimates will take 4 hrs 22 minutes.
Significantly quicker than the 2+ days it took to originally download.

later i will be doing some component swapsies and some completely futile and pointless testing on hypertthreading, speeds and such :peace:

Thanks

I am too a little dissappointed with the end result here on PC. Overall, the game runs decent/well.... Its not perfect for me...there is a stutter here and there... Im playing on High/VeryHigh detail.... FPS is ranging from 40-60.

I played the game on console since I have always been a GTA fan.... I have never really been a GTA online player. I played San Andreas Online, but that was unofficial, which I felt like made it a whole lot more fun..... There were crazy obstacle courses of ramps and structures built in the sky, and lots and lots of people driving around doing trolly GTA things :D.

Singleplayer for me is very replayable, I have quite the imagination so I can basically play single player and create my own things to do. However, I feel like they could have added more little things to enhance the game. New properties in single player maybe? More custom cars? Maybe some mods can do this for us. One thing that is pretty enjoyable is taking a truck and upgrading it, and taking it up on the mountains....

Were playing a game called Grand Theft Auto 5, and I litterally could not believe there was not a single "Chop Shop" for cars in the game. Or a place to even sell cars in singleplayer (I know you can in GTA 5 online)

Overall a good game, just dissappointed to not see any new story content or additions to single player... Honestly probably my favorite thing to do is get crazy fast cars and just drive around as fast as I can like I am on a track. (Thats another idea from previous GTA games.... Racing!.... I know they have Street racing, but they actually had a track in previous games to use.)

Yeah some short cuts on content baffled me. Like in GTA IV you were always fairly close to a place where you could get something to eat or drink to bring your health back up after a fight or accident. Here I literally had to search numerous times, then gave up and started looking at interactive maps on the net showing where you can get health pickups and such.

It's kinda ridiculous considering this kind of game is Rockstar's baby, yet Sleeping Dogs had such things in abundant quantity. I couldn't believe none of the food cart vendors can sell you food, and lots of carts actually have no vendors at them. The game just comes off as lazily made in many ways. It's not up to their usual standards on content and gameplay.
