Damnit. It seems like the singleplayer is inconsistent, underthought, and with unfinished or even intentionally left out features.

My problems after playing the game for about six hours:
1) I can't figure out how to progress in the story. It's showing me 13% something progress, and noone gives me any missions. Calling anyone results in answering machines only.
2) I can't make any money. The few missions I did didn't really give me anything, and I can't find any stores to rob (the map seems to be HUGE). Why in the fucking hell you're no allowed to sell cars in the singleplayer is beyond what I can understand.
3) The documentation is pathetic. There aren't even any tooltips with very rough description of all the settings. Key bindings apparently have five tons of other functions under them if you for example hold mouse button instead of pressing it. Some things work completely differently than expected. Like dodging. Nowhere does it say you have to HOLD the damn key instead of pressing it. I could go on and on about this particular thing, but I'd have to smack my head on a wall.
4) I have no idea how am I supposed to keep a car. I don't like the default one, and whatever else I park in garage randomly disappears.
5) Cars have absolutely fucked up physics and driving is a humongous pain in the ass (yes I'm using keyboard and am not buying a console controller for one game /any game/). Is there a mod that would make the speed more realistic? This is ridiculous!

There are some other less annoying things, but they are probably not worth pointing out.

The game is amazing and utter shit at the same time.

1) Try switching between characters, you should have Franklin and Michael at that point
2) You pretty much get money from missions and investing it in the stock market
3) Controls are fucked up sometimes, just look for tooltips when the games teaches you about that concept
4) You pretty much store it in a garage and if you leave it somewhere and drive off it gets sent to the impound near the police station.
5) Its just because you're using a keyboard. Flying, driving, and swimming are all stupid on a keyboard because it can only send a yes or no and you can only be so accurate with that. Sticking with it and just spending some time getting used to it will help, but you will never be as good as someone with a controller.

Switching between a cheap controller, and or using both controller to walk around and the mouse to aim and shoot is extremely easy. Driving and flying since it really requires a analog input for throttle and brakes should be done with a controller or joysticks.

I solved 1 by accidentally noticing roughly 1x1cm half invisible yellow thing outside of the car shop I was specifically supposed to walk over. WTF!

Most of the missions don't give any money I am about 20% through, have just unlocked Michael, and Franklin has about $2k on him. And the only thing I ever wasted money on was engine upgrade for a car that disappeared from my garage (really why the shit can't you keep cars in singleplayer, WHY?)

Controls are really doing my head in. Some stuff simply refuses to work sometimes (like dodging, success rate is about 20% even if I hold it). Some works in completely unintuitive way, and what pisses me off the most about it, some of the key combinations (that aren't explained ANYWHERE, not even the annoying manual) the game notifies you about only for about 3 seconds, then the text disappears and you're fucked, because you didn't have enough time to write it down, and you can't dig it up from anywhere.

4) Either is bugged, random, or I don't know, because cars only end up in the police garage sometimes (actually it only happened to me twice). Whatever you park in your garage respawns in there, but only sometimes as well.

Controller probably makes it significantly easier, but I am not buying that for one game I don't even know how long I will play. Besides, I hate consoles. I can drive around in a basic way with keyboard well enough (even if at the cost of permanently half destroyed car, plus I simply cannot do any racing), but the speeds are ridiculous, and make controlling cars really annoying. I get it's an arcade game, but with certain rather realistic aspects this really stands out in really stupid way.

Anybody else playing the game with an FX 8350 and GTX 970 combo? The game runs fine, but i get annoying stutter here and there where my FPS is dropping into the 30s-40s, and my pagefile is getting up to 14-15 gigs, and my Video Memory is going above 3.5Gigs.... even though the Video memory under the game options says its only at 2.5gigs.

I even have most of the graphics options set to High rather than Ultra.

This might sound stupid, but how do I make ANY money? I can steal any car, but I can't figure out how to sell them. I heard you can rob shops, but I can't find any that isn't a actually just a texture slapped on a side of a building. I am starting to think wtf.

You can go to gamecopyworld, over at the GTAV section they have a whole bunch of trainers that work for the most part. You can activate a trainer, load up on cash (I think every time you press NUMPAD 7, you get half-a-million dollars) and then turn the trainer off, unless you want to use the rest of the trainers abilities. Keep in mind, you will have to save the game, change character and then repeat the money cheat on the next character and save again because sometimes it can crash the game between character change.

Just be sure to download a trainer with the same version as your current game installation otherwise it might not work.

Does anyone know about any decent game guide which is up to date?

I don't think I can post a link here, so ill private message you one. I was going to suggest the IGN interactive map and walkthrough guide. You can use it to find your way around the map, find the stunt ramps and other pickup's but I found it useless for the most part and didn't bother with it after it failed me twice. I hope you have better luck with it.

Which GPU driver are you using ? Did you download the latest one which NVidia released for this game ?
The FPS drop and stuttering could be heat related. What temperatures are you getting ?
Is the game running off the SSD or the 1Tb ? Which drive is the pagefile set on ? If you have the pagefile on the 1Tb, maybe make it pagefile on the SSD only for faster access and utilization.
The GTX970 can't access more than 3.5Gb. What resolution are you running ? What happens when you lower some of the settings like shadows, textures etc ? Perhaps try to optimise your settings to use about 2Gb of your GPU and see how you go.
I have a feeling that your GPU is overheating. Make sure the fan speed is 100% and that you are not over-clocking the card (for testing purposes), run some temp tests. Let us know how you go.

Temps are fine from what I remember, it was in the mid-low 50s.

Windows 7 installed on my SSD, GTA 5 installed on my HDD.

My pagefile is on my SSD (I did try to move it to my HDD however It didnt seem to change much) - Ill try this again later when Im home

Running @ 1080p my GTX 970 seems to occasionally bump up to above 3.5 gigs VRAM (Ill have to log this later with MSI Afterburner) It occasionally is exceeding the 3.5g mark too...

I do have the distance scaling maxxed out, however I really need that in order to use my Top Speed Vehicle mod to load in the enviroment quicker.

I have a feeling the higher memory usage could be related to having a higher top speed on cars than the game was designed for.

Ill have to log out some information with Afterburner, and mess around with the settings a bit more. (When im home from work)

Could anyone help me with combat? I am doing something wrong. I always die within like 3 seconds when there are more than two NPCs shooting at me. I just keep trying to aim at stuff, start shooting, and and then die. All the damn NPCs are so small I can't really hit them from range. Up close I am dead before I aim properly, because they just instakill me. And all of them seem to have 5000% armour so the only way to kill them is either dumping 2 magazines in them or shooting them in the head which I have no idea how to do, considering the head is about 10 pixels big. I am really pissed off here, because I am fairly used to BF4 and I can play that just fine. Here, it's just pure rage.
The stupid game constantly unequips any gun I might have selected without any apparent reason on any occasion and also keeps changing/resetting the zoom level everytime I reaload which doesn't help much either.
The controls are awkward as hell, I equip a pistol, rush in a shop, try to point it at the damn guy, and instead I start waving my fists. Before I find it again the police is already on the way. The wheel is royal pain in the ass, too. I keep scrolling with mouse wheel like an idiot, trying to find the gun I wanted to use, and am dead before I even find it.
I just don't know what to do and feel like an absolute idiot.

Go to Amunation and buy body armor, or learn to use the hide feature more to protect yourself when people are shooting at you.

Game has a habit of randomly crashing - it's making me rush through the missions out of fear of losing my progress.

Performance is surprisingly unsettling, using Very High/High settings. I can't keep 96fps consistently - it's more like 70-96, with dips into the 50s/60s in populated areas. In the end, I kept Crossfire on, but capped the frames to 60.

Driving still feels bad, twitchy.

Way too many sports cars, exotic cars and high end vehicles all over the place. Yes, different locales have more of some type of vehicles, but even in poor areas, there's a Lambo every ten seconds. What is that all about? Totally takes the joy out of seeing something cool.
And no matter what car I am in, every one says 'nice car man!' It's a fricking tow truck, it's not nice!

My game issues were related to overheating northbridge since placing a fan back on there(had removed and thought didnt need anymore)game is really stable.

This game really stresses a system like no other... my psu becomes a space heater when playing.

So anyone with crash issues might need to cool mobo chipsets.

I agree with this.... I also think the top speed is not good enough and doesn't feel fast enough..... that's just me though....

Its like when you piss somebody off or a cop is after you they are instantly faster than a fully modded Turismo....

Police realism mod + vehicle top speed/handling mod is pretty cool... really only doable as Franklin though with the slowmo special ability.

I'm going to stop playing until/IF they bother fixing and tweaking the game. The interface is killing me (some things are horribly awkward to use, some are half impossible to find because they are dug in completely illogical places, some features are completely missing), controls are atrocious (I repeatedly get stuck at shit, unable to move around a simple corner or around certain obstacles, I keep switching guns instead of zooming in because of the stupid wheel) and the car physics are completely ridiculous even for an arcade game to name a few of my favourites.
Basically, I can just uninstall it and forget it. I did get about half my money's worth though, even if I only played solo online and a little bit of the singleplayer. Great graphics, very immersive, loads of potential, but still a pile of steaming horse shit in the end I guess it's plagued by being a console port. This just doesn't work well.

Which handling speed mod are you using, there's so many, all using the handling.meta.
Is that one bundled with police realism?

I haven't gone online yet and I don't know much about it but I get the impression it's not as intimate as the Saints Row games, with you and a few other friends wreaking havoc. GTA online is more open to everyone?

I know this post was awhile ago but your not closing down the launcher after you load the game are you? Lots of places were listing this as a possible fix for problems at launch but closing the launcher actually causes crashes.

I feel like there's always loads of good cars about until I need one urgently and then they are all crap haha, have vehicle diversity or whatever it is called maxed out to make it as varied as possible.

"Population Variety"

"Population Variety is unique in that has no effect on performance, but can affect visual fidelity quite considerably. The simplest explanation of its function is this: if there are 100 vehicles in the game files, and 50 civilians, 50% Population Variety will load 50 vehicles and 25 civilians into your video card's memory (VRAM), and randomly place them in the world. With 100% Population Density this would result in multiple copies of each vehicle and civilian appearing in each scene, reducing immersion once you notice the numerous clones. By increasing Population Variety you reduce the chance of this occurring, and see a greater variety of vehicles on the roads.

Per general game design rules, each civilian and vehicle is built with a strict polygon count, ensuring the performance cost of rendering five different civilians or vehicles is the same as rendering one five times. Each model and set of textures also requires a certain amount of VRAM, and by raising Population Variety you're allowing Grand Theft Auto V to load more unique models and textures into memory.

Variety is therefore dictated by your GPU's VRAM, and performance is dictated by the Population Density you specified earlier. For players with 2GB of VRAM, it's likely that compromises between the various memory-consuming settings will have to be made, and in our opinion Population Variety is one of the settings that should be sacrificed for superior textures and shadows."
