OTOH Fallout 3 was very removed from Fallout 1/2 (and the real purists think Fallout 2 is overrated), so part of me feel like it doesn't really matter anymore.

I also want the story to be made from ground-up, not just stuffing the game with stuff from the old games. Which means no BoS, no NCR, no Legion or anything even remotely tied to it. No mutants either.

Bethsoft tried cramming in all that "awesum" into Fallout 3 and the result was a pretty good game but a pretty mediocre RPG, and the old stuff they did put in was similar only in name, and felt (to me anyway) sort of forced. I won't say they perverted Fallout, but in essence that is what they did. This will build on that though, so there will probably be ANOTHER breed of super mutants and ANOTHER branch of the BoS and the NCR will have a diplomatic office there, all with mostly uninteresting writing and lazy "<INT> I see you have glasses." checks. Harold will probably be there too somehow. And the Legion, because they deemed that idea "awesum". It's like Stephen King said, "kill your darlings".

Again, it's actually a decent game, but ... Bethsoft is not good enough at writing to deserve the Fallout license IMO. They're good at hiking simulators and world-building, but not at writing, which is what a Fallout should be about.

And for the love of god, don't allow me to max out everything, or insert a roof for skill points if not a level roof. After doing what felt like a fraction of NV (and I hadn't even begin with the DLC) I was a demi-god who oneshotted everything from miles away and was essentially invincible. It's boring.

I don't know if I understand you... are you saying you don't like VATS? and why is your directive to turn users against VATS? I can live in this word knowing you like the FPS aspect better than the VATS system, why do you feel so strongly about making everyone believe what you believe? Seriously? Like I don't have a right to an opinion? Why are you insisting I'm trying to convince everyone just for stating what I feel? And I already made myself clear in numerous posts how I feel about the current shooting system, VATS included.

If you can't respect my right to an opinion, guess what, don't read it. Go on reading what you want to read instead, because clearly that's your mindset. That would be a whole lot better than unfairly labeling my intent and acting like I don't have a right to speak on the matter without being accused of using bully pulpit tactics.

It's common that fanboy threads on a lot of forums troll against anyone having an uncommon opinion, but in this case, there actually are a good percentage of people that feel the shooting system needs refining. So it's a bit odd that on what you'd think would be a more mature tech oriented forum, you have the same overly defensive lynch mob attitudes.

It's just a game dude, it's not like I'm peeing in your coffee because I don't like the brand you drink. I happen to feel as many do the current system sucks, deal with it and move on.

Err? OK? If you can not tell I was being sarcastic then I don't really know what to say. I thought you would find the humor in my post, but I guess not. Now you are going from your brain wash tactics to being a down right bully by telling me to move on... <-- yet again sarcasm buddy.. It's just a game buddy, I'm just saying if you really just gave VATS a valid try you would see how great it is, and you would want to using it all the time. Can I offer you a refreshing cup of my blend of coffee?

But really before this gets anymore out of hand. I'm with you I believe the aiming should be a lot better and once I purchase Fallout 4 I'm going to give it an honest try and not use VATS to fully see what I'm missing. Bottom line is VATS is a part of Fallout and it will not be going away. Period. get used to it.

The issue here is that Bethesda used dice roll for both VATS and regular first person shooting mechanic. To top it all off, Luck attribute has a significant influence here also.
That being said, VATS is nothing more than a tactical tool to issue actions while game is safely paused - a great homage to turn based combat from first two games.
They will probably do similar improvement like from Oblivion to Skyrim - every hit actually hits and it deals at least minimal amount of damage instead of having misses.

After reading all of the conflict, and trying to steer away from it, I feel there's something that isn't touched on.

People say Fallout is made by the VATS system, and removing it is tantamount to a shooter series suddenly no longer supporting iron sights aiming. Basically, that VATS is so interlinked to the Fallout universe that not having it in one of the games is impossible. I now have to ask everyone that makes this assertion, how many Fallout games have you actually played?

Following that same line of reasoning:
1) The move to non-turn based combat in Fallout 3 ruined the franchise, because it destroyed its roots.
2) The fact that there are only two ending to the game isn't in keeping with Fallout. Bethesda is therefore tarnishing its name by not making a complex and interactive enough story.
3) Fallout 3 lacked a trait system, therefore breaking with established cannon in 1/2 and breaking the game. It was reintroduced in New Vegas.


Do you see how focusing on one particular element of the game is foolish? If you did that every installment after 2 can be proven to be either insulting, or not a true follow up. I'd argue that increasing technical capabilities have given us the ability to wander the wasteland in real time, and that is a good thing. It doesn't keep with tradition, but isn't really in opposition to it. Likewise, we've got the opportunity to improve on shooting mechanics. Instead of selecting a body part from a menu, and praying to RNG that we hit, we can actively aim and snipe our targets in real time. That was a limitation of old hardware/software, which was "solved" via VATS aiming. Likewise, this game is supposedly on the East Coast again. I've heard plenty of people bemoan this, because Fallout is a West Coast game in the lore. Perhaps you should be railing against that?

So, let's agree to disagree. We all agree that the shooting mechanics in Fallout need to be reworked. We all agree that VATS can be retained. We disagree only that VATS is a trait which should actively worked to be removed.

Neogaf thread, in which a Bethesda Community Lead says that it won't be coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3. That means the shackles of last generation consoles are being lifted, and that there's sufficient technical improvements that the games wouldn't run on decade old hardware. Expected, but excellent to be confirmed directly.

The game will be good no matter what. You can talk about Fallout 3 ruining the Fallout legacy, but the older games were antiquated, and wouldn't have been picked up by more than a handful of die hard fans.

Love it so far.

The home and defense building is more like town building to me which fit perfectly with post apocalypse life. I like how townfolks gather around your home.
Individual mod for individual limb armor
The story began before nuke hit with lots of pre nuke assets

Kinda gold mine for modders.

My only complain/wish is that doge could use some gameworks or tressfx touch.

Very strange, LOL, since I think most people consider FNV to be the better game, and definately more in keeping with the Fallout universe.

I watched it too, I really like settlement building and defending, crafting, voiced protagonist and all gameplay improvements. VATS is here to stay and game atmosphere feels great thanks to volumetric lighting and physically based renderer

I really, really hope the engine won't be bugged to hell garbage like the one in Skyrim. And that they will unfuck the Creation Kit or whatever will the modding tool be called. In other words, I hope they learned a lesson from Skyrim.
