CPU upgrade help

Im looking for a mid range cpu that can be over clocked that isnt to much more expensive than an i5 4690k
Im currently running a q8300

Ummm…., the 4690k. Hard to find better without paying much more.
If you are bound to s1150 the next step up would be the 4770k/4790k chips. But those are about $100 more. Unless you have a Mico Center close by.

You could go for the newer Skylake s1151 parts if you aren't bound. Like the 6600k. But in that case you have to also factor in a price premium for the memory and motherboard. That is if you manage to find a store that has stock.

You've got a limited number of options. Let's review what has been released on the 1150 socket:
4790k
4770k
4690k
4670k

The 4770k and 4670k have been phased out, and replaced with the 90s. This means you've got two choices for an overclocking quad core processor. If you want threading, you've got one choice. If you've got budgetary concerns, you've got the other choice. If you're looking at the AMD pool, you really don't have a choice. The AMD offerings aren't great, unless all you're doing is looking to overclock the crap out of them.

Buy the 4690k, or go to a Microcenter quickly and pick up a 4790k. If that somehow isn't clear enough, then wait a couple of months. By that time Skylake will actually be available, and you could theoretically wind up with something better (though it will require investing in a whole new platform). Honestly though, you could probably get away with any of the Haswell offerings, even stock clocked, and be light years ahead of your current system.

how much money do you have for having the build done?
where do you live? pretty important for opportunity discounts and hot deals…
are you gona build a complete new rig or do you think on using some existing parts of your old build for saving some important pennies for more parts!?
what would you do with te computer? gaming ? working? just overclocking? this is pretty important!

You're going to need a new motherboard and RAM. I know it seems obvious but it wasn't mentioned.

The only AMD chips that can come up to an i5 are the 8350's and up. You could just get a pre-owned 3570k and go with that.

OP kinda makes it sound like the i5 isn't a good chip.

I know about the new parts and im using my current case most likely, current power supply and current graphics card till after the cpu upgrade then i will either go to a r9 380 or gtx 960 idk yet.

If you plan to overclock I would go i5 4690K. After that you begin to see some diminishing returns. But its hard to recommend anything until you post your budget and more importantly what you plan on using the computer for.

I'd go with the above. Nice board for the money and I've been running the same ram in my pc for the last year with no issues. Will not get in the way of a large CPU cooler either.

If you can stretch, get the coolermaster hyper 212 evo. Would be a good budget pairing with that CPU.

Or if OP doesn't want to overclock, get a non-K chip and get the 212 that way but since OP wants da overclocking power, I'd almost want to go with something stronger than the 212.

Not much point getting the 212 for a none overclocking chip. The intel stock cooler is perfectly good enough to keep it cool. And the 212 would easily allow for a decent, everyday overclock.

iv actually been going over it and im not sure about overclocking now... i guess im just a lil nervous about doing it and getting it wrong or something. if i dont do over clocking would the non k version be worth it? im more or less looking for something that wont hold a R9 380 back and do pretty good for alot of games at 1080p maxed out... my Q8300 does not do very well with much of anything recent and barley does well for even older games. Like for some reason i meet the requirments for dark souls prepare to die edition but still cant run it, it locks up at 15 fps

Overclocking is much easier and safer than it used to be. There is not a lot of cost difference between them so I'd generally go for the overclocking chip now, even if you don't overclock it till a year or two later. You'll end up regretting it otherwise.

Probably would be safer, again, getting a better cooler for when you're overclocking. Adding in voltage bumps the heat produced quite a bit.

Do you have any recommendations for something good and not to expensive.
For now i prolly wont do any crazy overclocking maybe to like 3.7-3.8 ghz range
