Gigabyte HD 7850 2GB Stops after an hour of Gameplay

Hey Guys

I am facing an issue with my Gigabye HD 7850 2gb Graphics Card. While Playing Games for an hour it suddenly stops working and PC goes to Black screen and had to Restart or close the PC manually. i don't know why its dong so.

I have tested GTA V, BF4 & MAD MAX on it. and it certainly showed same behavior on all three games. i dont know if either due to PSU or GPU itself. Temperatures never go beyond 60c

Another thing i have noticed is its Voltage at Fulll Load is set at 1225mV, which seems quite High, usually default voltage is 1075mV.

core i3 2100
Gigabyte 7850 2GB @ 975/1200mhz
Corsair Vx550w
4GB DDR3 1333mhz RAM

If you're running out of space and hitting swap takes too long, a game can crash. 4GB might be pushing that limit.

This sounds more like a card that has been bios modded for mining.

Does that voltage stay there at all times? If so, I'd suspect a former mining card.

Did you buy this used? If not, we can rule out any former owner mucking with it.

Ok we assume its crashing due to limited RAM. But why GPU stopping working . it should not stop or in other case it PC restart normally or atleast show a BSOD for indication.

i didn't checked the Volts during Game. but temp stayed at 60c max. i plays Mad Max and after 15 minutes it shows same behavior.

i doubt on its Volts too, bcoz 1225mV is too high for 975mhz core. can it be cause of crashing??

VRM's could be overheating on the card as well, or even something else on the mobo (chipsets, ram itself, etc).

Is any of this hardware OC'd?

I own 2 of the 3 (GTA V, BF4) games use more than 4gb of system ram. That's prolly the issue here.

Try playing bf4 in x86 mode and turn up fan profile on gpu see if its stable.

i have Benchmarked Metro last light in 28 loop. not a single flick on it. i played cod4 even without any issues. But when i played Mad Max it suddenly crashes to nowhere. it crashes bad and On headphone, it sound is like when you overclock Vram or RAM then duriing Bench it fails then Grrrrrrrrr and give BSOD. same kind of thing

what you suggest how do i check RAM and VRAM

I see that you have Rivatuner stats server already installed. You should be able to display system memory on the OSD.

^ Definitely try this. I also suspect you're running out of RAM - 4GB is simply not enough these days.

I could see it causing a crash if the GPU runs out of memory and system memory is already full. The GPU can't really utilize system memory to keep rendering because it's probably swapping a ton of pages already. A lot of games I've played lately will use 3GB of system memory easy, The Witcher 3 does just after loading the world on my machine, so I can easily see two things coming together to cause a crash. I would monitor system memory, the page file, and video memory. I have a hunch that it's not just swapping but running out of VRAM at the same time. The resources probably just aren't there do keep going forward. That would be my guess.

The OP should probably consider investing some money into system memory if this proves to be the case.

Look at the max possible commit size though, page file is only 4GB (4GB system memory plus 4GB swap.) 8GB total including page file, even after swapping all of Windows out, it's possible that he's running out of virtual memory. Performance has got to be terrible though if it's getting to that point.

Sir thanks for your response and suggestion.

My issue is resolved now.

Guess what it wasn't the RAM at all, Actually it was my PSU culprit, you can say a bad unit or badly used before as i bought it in used. that won't letting GPU to pass GTA V and BF4 after 15 mints of gameplay. I replaced PSU and get quality FSP 450W in good condition and now it can run game more than 3 hours without freezing or crashing or shutdowns. A big Relief!!!

But Question still stands, PSU was the difference, but why i still able to played COD4, SOM, easily without any shutdowns, and not GTA V, BF4. It was a very strange issue.

Do you guys have any clue why its behavior was so???

As an example, the latest patch/expansion to starcraft II uses 50W more power for me at the main menu than it does in the game itself.


Changing a setting that reduces CPU load could reduce power consumption (and prevent crashes) - unless that game was CPU bottlenecked and now your GPU can be used more, doing the opposite. It's rather unpredictable which games use more power, and when.

Well, yes these contents are unpredictable. every time there is something going on among components. and i think Benchmarks dont draw much power or take load, as i benchmarked MetroLL and done 26 loop on it. without any issue. must be lower load on cpu

Your Pc will stop running, and a message will display Saying it has run out of memory (Confirmed), and will shut down. the OP's set up is close to what one of my extra PC's was, and it RAN GTA5 on the Same OS....4Gb RAM, a 6950 (1Gb) and no issues. so this MAY be something else. my experience for what it's worth.

you can Try running gta5 in lower res @ low settings to see if it continues, but if he's not getting a "ran out of RAM " message, i'm willing to bet RAM isn't the issue, or atleast running out of RAM isn't the issue.

You're right. RAM wasn't the issue, while i already tested Game with 8GB RAM.

Issue was with PSU, vx550w probably not drawing full potential to the full loaded rig. so i checked with another PSU and GPU was working fine on every game with new PSU.
