Steam has roughly 5 million unique users with Skyrim in their accounts that was the last confirmed data I could find and its dated back in 2013.

Phyiscal Sales:

PC: 3.77 Million
360: 8.51 Million
PS3: 6.23 Million

So thats Physical sales as of Oct 3 2015

Steam player count via Steam DB has roughly 9 million users The data is not 100% correct. But is within the realm of probability so even with a leeway of 1 million. Skyrim on PC has around 7 to 9 million sales.

https://steamdb.info/app/72850/graphs/

So going by the data available. Skyrim on PC outsold the PS3 and 360 versions. Both consoles may equal a greater share of total sales. However Bethesda does not need to pay for patch releases on PC like they do on console. That cost alone can add up into the Millions of dollars range. Meaning for all intents and purposes. Skyrim had a larger return on investment on PC than any other individual platform.

I don't doubt the console patches added up. All I know is that for the next 3 days after Fallout 4 comes out I'm going to sequester myself next to my desktop.

Did anyone say if the PC is going to have a day one patch? Also is it worth it to set up a VPN to play it early?

most likely Day 1 patch is already applied to PC version during the download phase i would guess. Consoles patches require time and testing PC they can be pushed out asap. So most people getting Fo4 on PC probably already have the patch.

@Eric3988 LOL, @crazyeyesreaper answered before I returned. As he says, despite their claim at the bottom, they got no sales revenue info from Steam. Steam does not release sales figures.

Additionally, the other problem with sales figure postings like that is they invariably cut off after the first few weeks or month. Notice I said "long term"?

You can be sure though that Bethesda and Steam know what continuing volume they have on the game, and how many are using mods. They saw a GOLD MINE, which is why they tried to make mods paid. On The Nexus alone, Skyrim has 44,484 mods, and mods just for Skyrim have been downloaded 791.2 MILLION times!

Assuming 50% of the users don't store their downloaded mods on a storage drive like I do, that still translates to 375 million downloads. Assuming the average user downloads about 35 mods, thats roughly 10 million PC users downloading mods from just The Nexus. I can't find the source right now, but I believe that is in the neighborhood of the number of estimated PC sales of Skyrim so far.

EDIT: It looks like my statistical guess is in the neighborhood of @crazyeyesreaper numbers. :)

Further, it sells very well still on Steam. I know of no one, including my kids that could be bothered to go back and play a blah console version a second time. But everyone I know who has Skyrim on PC, including my kids still plays, with mods. Anecdotal I know, but it is representational.

I think the fact that Bethesda has released console ports since Morrowind means that they're committed. PC is the way to go, plus if they can ever monetize the modding OMG, they will rake in that cash.

I feel the same as you regarding the console experience vs PC. Having played FO3 and Morrowind the first time on console then playing both and their sequels on PC I completely agree RTW

@Black Panther wtf?? Which is it GABEN!!??

Yeah, I'm worried that if I add RAM I'd mess up my overclock.
I'd be far worse with an i7 930 at its stock speed of 2.8Ghz and more RAM than with 6GB with the CPU @ 4Ghz.

Should have no effect on the CPU overclock.

I'm surprised of the skepticism of some in this thread. Sure FO4 isn't going to be perfect, but it's going to be great. Skyrim practically redefined the RPG genre as we know it today, Bioware has stated that in an interview. Bringing a quality RPG to the console masses and being as popular as it is was unimaginable back when it released. People still make quality mods for Skyrim even today and not too long ago, Bethesda wanted to monetize that as it is so popular. Sure Bethesda games are buggy, but they almost always redefine the RPG genre as we know it. I hope FO4 is as popular as Skyrim is and can't wait to play it.

Two problems with your logic.
1) Skepticism is warranted, given other things. Your logic seems to be based on a very rosy view of the past. One in which Fallout 3 worked/works now, one in which Obsidian wasn't the developer of New Vegas, and most importantly one in which Elder Scrolls Online isn't a thing. To not frame expectations with these facts is asking for disappointment when a very good game isn't transcendental.

2) Fallout hasn't redefined the RPG genre since 2. It's done an excellent job adding more bits onto its gameplay, but they aren't RPG elements. For a moment, let's strip out the stuff that isn't RPG related. That means no crafting. That means no need for FPS mechanics. That means that the exploration of an open world is gone. What we're left with is a story, and leveling system. The story is rather trashy, let's be honest. It's middle ground Hero's Journey 101. While I can't say any of it is bad (I honestly like it), it isn't defining the RPG scene when things like Journey manage to have a better story without a single word. The leveling system also hasn't changed across multiple games. While the visual trappings are similar, Skyrim functions like New Vegas and 3. Choose a path, add a bonus to that path, and occasionally you get a unique perk rather than a straight increase to effectiveness. Other than quirky names, the system hasn't changed in almost a decade.

So is it clear now why skepticism is warranted? Is it clear why slavishly drooling at the "opportunity" to be a beta tester to a game I paid money for doesn't appeal to me? Most importantly, is it clear that while I want Fallout 4 to be amazing there has been too much baggage to make me believe it will live up to the hype so many people blindly put behind it? If not, I'm expecting to never hear about a single bug from you. I never expect to hear you praise Bethesda for patching something, because they must have released it in a playable state. I'm sorry, but Bethesda doesn't deserve that level of support. You giving it to them is baffling.

As to paid DLC, come on. You're citing a system that went down in flames because between Bethesda and Valve each "paid" mod might earn the author pennies per dollar of sales. Something forced onto the community without consent, and with absolutely no review and submissions process to ensure quality. I swear, Stevie Wonder is asking how you can be so blind. This is a point a skeptic should be touting, not somebody happily throwing their money at Bethesda.

If this is an actual screenshot I'll just go an kill myself. Or not, because it's Bethsoft and NO ONE there can't find theif ass with anything less than twenty nineteen year old crack-hookers finding it for them.

I might just pirate it and play it so I can tell you guys how bad it is. It'll be fun, I promise!

And I will be so very right in everything I say.

Regarding the NV bugs u mentioned have u checked out new vegas nexus? FYI it's where the modding community hangs out. They have many bug fix mods, some have a couple hundred fixes,

if you haven't seen the mods available you'll be in for an eye opener.. Some of them completely overhaul the game. I only play Fallout because of the modders. The Vanilla version sucks imo.

The Nexus covers way more than New Vegas, 3, and Skyrim. I don't contest that point.

Here's the problem. The Nexus should be for Mods, not required patches that the Developer and Publisher decided weren't critical enough to invest in. This is part of the reason that the modding community is so strong, we invest more into these games that either the Publisher or Developer. This is also why there are people drooling over simply the mention of Fallout 4, without ever considering that their admiration is being placed into something without reason. That little voice in the back of your head says "the modding community will fix everything, even if Bethesda doesn't."

I'm tired of being somebody's b****. I'm tired of forking over $60, then another $80 for the DLC, and still running into a broken game. Thing is, there's no reason for Bethesda to fix this. They get people to give up their money just by saying Fallout or Elder Scrolls. Honestly, they're a more honest EA. The fact that people can't, or perhaps don't want to, see that is galling. I'd like people to stand up and demand quality, but it seems as though this is a pipe dream. Well, at least by the time the ultimate, or whatever they call it, edition comes out the available mod list will be huge. Sigh.

Edit:

Oh my god. What's wrong with his face?

It's like a Raider (Fallout series, not the sports team) and Chimpanzee had a love child, then dropped it on its face a couple of times.
