Laptop coolers

Ok I ordered myself a Enermax Aeolus Pure.
I know it's the older model and EOL but I don't care, I liked this design more than the newer model with flashing colored lights and such.

Specs of the laptop cooler I ordered: Air Flow Rate (CFM) 60.528 / 79.152 (+/- 10%)

Who here has a laptop cooler and what is your experience with it, temperature wise?

Got one of these Thermaltake Massive's http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...rmaltake_laptop_cooler-_-34-991-161-_-Product for my fiance. It works well keeping temperatures tolerable in the system, even under load.

Some people say they don't work. Anecdotally, i can say they do.

I have Deepcool N360 FS BLACK . I got for about 15 euro. I think it's the best bang for the buck "budget" cooler. It has a fan controller, one USB 2.0 and I like the angles for typing. What I really enjoy though is, this thing is basically a single piece of aluminum, so if/ when the fan dies I can still enjoy it as a laptop stand. Now for the important part - > does it help with temperatures ? It does....a little...very little. Just enough so my GPU doesn't overheat when gaming ( Lenovo business series here -> not meant for gaming anyway)/ To be fair, it's waaaay off the stuff Zalman makes....but I didn't pay 50-60 euro for a laptop cooler either.

It's a hunk of plastic/metal with a huge fan on it. What on it could possibly go out of date?

I think the primary benefit is just giving the fans at the bottom some breathing room. I can't imagine the large, slow fan at the bottom is going to force in much more air than the internal fan is already drawing.
Hmm. Now I'm curious. Anyone have some well documented scientific testing to show off?

there is so much people that says that all those coolers don’t work and also claim that they use to push dust indice computers, but I'm my personal opinion they are pretty important since increde fresh airflow inside vents, also help top minimize heat gaps under the computer… so definitively they work !

I personally would not have gotten or recommended that Enermax for one reason; it does not use an external power source. In my mind, I don't feel putting additional demands (thus generating more heat) on the internal power circuits to power a fan to cool off those same circuits is the best idea. It seems somewhat counterproductive.

That said, it is getting harder to find notebook coolers that have their own power supplies, so you may not have had a choice. And in those cases, I recommend using a USB Wall Adapter to power the pad whenever possible.

Those who say they don't work are just self-centered. They are people who believe the universe centers around them and because they don't need something, nobody needs it. Because "a" pad they tried on their notebook provided no benefit, all notebook pads are useless for all notebooks. That's just BS. Not all pads are created equal, and for sure, not all notebook cases are the same either.

Okay, if your notebook does not have bottom vents, the benefits you see will not be a great as it would be with notebooks that do have bottom vents. But even if no bottom vents, at least on those notebooks that I have seen, the bottoms still get pretty warm so any air movement WILL help move some of that otherwise trapped heat out.

I have a pad with my notebook and it clearly gives me a few degrees drop. But those "few" degrees really don't do anything for me because even without the pad, the notebook does not get hot enough to throttle down in speed. But of course, YMMV.

But what the pad does do for me is allow me to use my notebook on the carpet, bed or even on my lap. What a concept! So even if I don't plug it in, it provides a flat, hard (and in my case, "ergonomically" tilted) surface that allows air to circulate underneath which does help keep my notebook cooler.

Ok this is not about a laptop cooler, but it shows that cooling the bottom of a laptop helps:

Why one would need this thing... as almost anyone has a phone charger... with better specs even... and cheaper...

I always charge my phone on my laptop so I might use it for the laptop cooler but would that single fan draw that much power?

With those thingies, I've learned you always have to check the output and read the labels. I bought a mobile power bank, but it didn't have a one of those + a cable. I was like, not a big deal, I will use on of my phones. However, the power bank required that thingie to output 2.4 A, but that little bugger managed only 0. 7. Needless to say, the first time I tried it got really hot. Then I went in and bought a decent wall usb charger. My point is, check if this will supply enough energy to the cooling pad. Especially if you are using male- to - female extension cable that is very long. ( like I do at this moment ).

I used an el-cheapo laptop cooler last summer and to be honest I don`t think the Fan made much of a difference, just the mere fact that the lap top was raised off the desk attributed to the slightly lower temp, maybe 5c cooler.

But when I flipped over the lappy and unscrewed the panels that cover the HD and other stuff (3 panels on that particualar laptop) it obviously made a huge difference with the air now blowing more direct into the components.

Kind of inapropriate though if you need to take your laptop anywhere.

Just dug it out, I think it cost me about $7, very crap RPM though, but it did the job after the little mod above.

In the specs it only states: "USB bus power +5V" , maybe the specs are on the fan, so I have to check that once I have it.
But would that fan really draw that much power?

as for USB wall charger ... well i used my nvidia powerbrick ...5v 2.1A is more than enough (tho even on Laptop USB it was enough)

and it doesn't ... except a very light "hummmmmmm" barely audible even during idle

i prefer putting my fan on the 2 vent than having a big one that cover them half and blow indirectly on it

well i might be slightly deranged .... after all even a Cooler Master JetFlo 120 at 2.2k RPM is tolerable for me ahah! (tho those 80mm are really not noisy at all )

For USB 1.0 and 2.0 specs (and most pads are USB 2.0), a standard port is capable of delivering up to 500mA (0.5A). So if the pad is designed to operate through a standard port, then yes, your charger is fine.

most of the smartphones charger use a brick with a standard A plug and pack a cable (A to micro USB) and some, like the Motorola Moto G 2nd, only pack a cable.
back in the days maybe ... tho Nokia do like you mention, but that's the only one i saw like that, every single charger i got with my smartphones/smartwatch/ heck even bluetooth portable speaker (even apple do it like that otherwise that would be a bit idiotic with so much different proprietary connector ... oh wait ... it's already idiotic they did like that ... well the USB A apple charger is a redemption ... )

the one from my LG G Watch R (5V 1A) the fastcharge type from LG G Flex 2 is either 5V 1.80A or 9V 1.67A, only low end charger are 5V and less than 800mA
now i wonder if it really matter that much .... using a 5V 0.5A USB port of a laptop to power those fans, mine works properly either way...

it does not matter 1.0 2.0 3.0 3.1 if you only use it to power the fans ... the 2.0 is only for the USB Hub, for the fans ... not even.
i even have a USB A to Micro with only the lead for 5v and no DATA wiring

I will try to connect it at the laptop first, thats what it is designed for in the first place I think.
If I notice that the laptop runs hotter than usual (which I don't think) then I will try it with the charger in the wall.

Come on dude! I said, "Every phone I have seen". You are so ate up to prove you are right, you are now telling everyone what "I" have seen! You say I am wrong, then mention the Nokia showing I am right!

And STILL, every phone "I" have seen uses a mini or micro USB connector. So while phone owners may be able to use the charger that came with their phone, cooling pads use standard USB connectors. So they will STILL need a different cable, or a mini/micro to standard adapter anyway. So you are still wrong - unless their phone uses a standard USB port and I don't know of any, including Nokias, that do.

But that is STILL not the point!!!!

The point is, to avoid adding even more demands on the notebook's power circuits you are trying to cool, use an external power source when possible.
