As my title says, Im not seeing my usb drives in Windows explorer. i plug them in , there is No sound, no "installing device software", nothing. If i open "my computer" , the progress bar SLOWLY fills up with green, and MAYBE the useless "removeable drive" title will appear, with the right letter, but it isnt any good, because if i click it in ANY way, process explorer freezes. I CAN see the drives i plug in, if I go into Device manager\disc drives. I have tried BOTH Usb 3.0, and 2.0 , annd I have had NO luck. They used to work, but I can think of NO reason why now they do Not. Any useful ideas are Gladly welcomed.**edit** If i have the USB drive plugged in , and try to run Disc manager, it doesnt appear, just a blank window, but if i remove all usb drives, and run it again, viola! it works fine.

If i touch any of these removable drives my PC's windows explorer will freeze

thanks.

can you do a scan for viruses and run a SMART scan on your HDD?

I reccomend
Hitman or EEK

and pretty much any HDD program will do but I primarily use gsmart or crystal

also do the disks show up in disk management?

only reason i suggest the smart data is because of the slow access time of explorer.

I suggest the virus scan because i had to deal with a system several months ago that had a trojan that modified files and prevented usb devices from loading.

I suggest disk manager because using bench machines for data pulls from HDDs would allocate all of my drive letters and windows stopped issuing them even after the drive was removed and there is a way to clear them.

i scanned today @ 7AM, with Malwarebytes Pro, nothing showed up.

what do you mean when you say a "smart" scan?

as far as disc manager goes...thats a good point i forgot to mention. which shows its got to be usb drives caising the issue. If i have the USB drive plugged in , and try to run Disc manager, it doesnt appear, just a blank window, but if i remove all usb drives, and run it again, viola! it works fine.

are the drives readable in another machine?

they work perfectly fine in my other PC its a win10 PC, but i dont think its the OS, its either My USB drivers, or Asmedia usb 3.0 or something like that. i just dont know where to begin

It sounds like a classic dead drive thing, but as they work on other systems... Have tou reinstalled the drivers? What about other stuff, like mice and keyboards, do they work as intended?

I would try ripping out my USB controller drivers and maybe even reinstalling the chipset and start there.

Once we know the drivers are good we can move on.

yeah that was my first step, but they work A-Okay in the other PC's. they actually show up in less than a second, and are decently fast for what they are, its my Old SB i5 PC, likely driver based rubbish causing the problem.

I would try ripping out my USB controller drivers and maybe even reinstalling the chipset and start there.
And what would be the easiest way? just uninstall from "control panel, then you think i should use the intel Driver utility? or go right to Asmedia ? God im outta touch, its been SO long since ive had to troubleshoot something like this....normall its just **swap out random faulty component..insert new one** and im all done ;)

i ran that intel chipset utility, and its giving me an error stating "intel chipset device software Failed" ? where can i get this stuff manually?**nevermind, it turns out that intel driver software wa for theyre Motherboards, not theyre CPU's.

i ran updates, haven't done chipset yet, restarted, and still when i plugged the drive into the PC nothing, tried the front panel 3.0 = nothing tried the usb 2.0's on my monitor = nothing, tried the 3.0 on the back of my PC = nothing, then oddly enough i tried the 2.0 on the Back I/O of the PC and it worked, so i scanned it and..... NOW i am REALLY stumped. im gonna try the chipset installation, but after that im all out of ideas.

now i cant find the damn Asmedia 3.0 Host controller driver download FFS . where the hell can i get the damn Asmedia USB 3.0 Host controler driver from?? anyone know? i lookedo nasmedias site, but it just tells about the software, it doesnt supply the driver

will do, and thanks again. BTW, heres a separate issue that is bothering me. I ran a file transfer onto one of the USBdrives, to see its speed, did it via the 3.0 port, then on the 2.0 port, and got the EXACT same numbers O_O . i dunno why it isnt benefiting from the 3.0 increased capabilities, but it isnt, possibly because it is Such an old Drive, and is 2.0 only, atleast that is my guess....coem to think of it, i dont think i even own a USB 3.0 drive...now i know where to spend some of that free newegg $$ :) see the photos included, i named the Pic's according to the usb used.

;) USB is backwards compatible not forward. a USB 2.0 device will max out its speed on a USB 3 port not USB 3 itself.

remember though you will always be limited to the drive itself. first and formost. There will always be other bottle necks and software over head but bearing in mind all else is fine you will only ever pull what the stick itself is capable of and even as USB 3 goes not all sticks are created equal. some have drastically different R/W speeds.

im not to ask here. i care about my ram but not my thumb drives, iv destroyed several kingstons and silicon powers though.

I have an ADATA and OCA drive that have lasted forever. The mushkin drives are nice too.

not so much last forever, just a good all arounder is all. its been a VERY long time since i sprung for one (usb drive). its one of those things like lighters, or pennies, you just find 'em around, and it seems liek i never need to buy 'em. but now its catching up to me, since my fastest ones, are REALLY slow. ill just check for a reputable brand, and look for good reviews, or good speed ratings.

There are updated Asmedia drivers in existence that were edited to support newer OS and so on for specific Asmedia chips. Not sure where I found them on google,
