Technically speaking. That 980m is desktop version of a GTX970 and a single GTX970 doesnt push 4k well on its own. I dont think the 980m will fair any better.

Would rather they kitted it with a 1440p screen but 4k is a big buzzword these days

Only need premium Logitech MX Master mouse and some nice 60% mechanical keyboard and backpack for lap.
To be honest I would use laptop for internet and keep my desktop PC for gaming.
Specification of this laptop are great. Better than some pre-build configurations with i7-6700.
But this is hardware for someone who love laptop and mobile platform for gaming or can afford both, PC and premium laptop.
This is not only laptop, specifications are better than most desktop PC.

Next build I want small PC. But I will use mATX board for Intel EP. Smaller than that can't give me what I want.
And nice mATX case could be same or very similar size as Mini ITX with space for much more things. PCI-E SSD, second card, dedicate sound card,...

The reason why the 980M is scoring lower is because of its TDP which is capped at just 100w while the 970 is capped at 145w, if you multiply the 980m score by 1.45 you get almost exactly the same score as the 970 did.

Same here with my alienware 15r2. Good machine, but will be the last gaming laptop I own. I miss having a super portable machine, and spend 99% of gaming time at a desk anyway.

Desktops are just so much more flexible and configurable.

So you can always drop a 4K screen to either 1080P or 1152P - and they look great and perform well in games. 1152P is my preference.

I would want a G-Sync screen at 4K anyday - even if the GPU can't push all the pixels at native.

My worry with that laptop is that it is going to be loud and/or throttle to keep components cool. Usually there is too much of a tradeoff when the words "Gaming" and "Thin/Light/Sleek" are used together.

Do you have a 980m? No? Cus I do. It is a massive POS. It is nowhere near a 970 in terms of performance and any competent person would be able to google the real world equivalent before purchasing a laptop. Which I did. It is still a pos.

Its closer to a gtx 770. Literally every single benchmarking site shows this. And so does the actual performance.

I'd just run it at 1080p in native scaling honestly. The desktop would be the only thing 4k.

That both cards are as capable and the 980m is just limited by the stock 100W TDP which if raised to 145W like on the 970, will put it at the same performance.

This...at that screen size, 4k is...very pointless. Had to order my Dell XPS 13 custom because if you wanted a bigger HDD you had to have the higher screen size as Best Buy didn't cary a configuration like that. Not a problem though.
