I'm not even giving up my 980 for awhile. I'll need to find my card gets exceeded in capability regularly in new games before I upgrade.

X70 cards will be for 980Ti what 970 was for 780Ti. 5% better than the last.

Don't count on it. The X80 will likely beat the 980Ti. Expect X70 to only beat the 980.

You can think what you like, but that doesn't mean it is more likely, it's far more likely for the story to repeat itself based on previous generations, unless you can justify it with some data.

According the first reviews of the following cards here:

graphics.png

A GTX 970 was roughly on par with GTX 780 Ti, it was simply a more efficient chip, doesn't matter it loses in some of the specs like transistor count and CUDA cores, and the preliminary specs of GP104 show again an increase in RAM compared to GTX 980 Ti, with roughly the same amount of transistors, even if the X70 ends up with 2048 CUDA cores based on 980 vs 970, it should be enough based on GTX 970 vs GTX 780 Ti numbers, just in case this wasn't enough maybe because architecture limits, base clocks are expected to increase significantly based on GP100 chip.

This doesn't matter for GTX 980 Ti owners because if story repeats itself, X80 will not be significantly more powerful than a GTX 980 Ti (specially the heavily OCed) or X70, so the price increase over X70 will not be justified (15% higher performance at %50 higher price), although Nvidia might want to cripple X70 a bit more this time to avoid that.

Actually it might not matter to most already with a GTX 970 or better, because the increase will probably not be big enough to make a jump into 4K 60fps in new games for example, you can easily wait another year for the full fledged Pascal.

Dude, are you on drugs or not well? Perhaps you are feverish? I made my statement BASED on previous generations.

You'll find no one here that agrees that a 970 beat a 780Ti! I myself owned a 780 and a 970, and in many situations the 780 beat the 970...and the 780 certainly is less than a 780Ti.

And yes, expect the 1070/X70 to be gimped compared to the 1080/X80.

As I said I am basing on reviews from here http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GTX_950/23.html for example, overall performance shows a difference of -+3% depending on resolution between 970 and 780Ti (probably changed a lot over time with drivers since release date), and I am sure it will vary a lot depending on the game, I never had a 780Ti to really compare.

Also I just said roughly the same, not beat a 780Ti.

Anyway we will see soon enough, I think even if they offer a good increase per price, most will still be disappointed because Nvidia really hyped up Pascal with all the changes including HBM2, most people would expect a bigger leap than just the usual.

To all the naysayers, I think it's ENTIRELY possible the 1080 will blow the 980Ti out the water. Nvidia can afford to do this, Ti sales will tail off soon enough anyway, and we all know they have something EPIC under their sleeves with HBM2 next year anyway, so I think it's entirely possible they will push the boat out with the 1070/1080 and give us something very special. I may be wrong, but I am quietly confident. We shall see soon enough anyway... :)

Exactly! Nvidia has been pretty aggressive the last couple of years from 680 through 980ti as far as
performance improvements and custom 980tis are still king of the single GPU hill. BTW for all those posting about 980 ti sales they have already STOPPED making 980 series chips. The 1080 and 1070 will be filling the channels early summer.

Yeah but mind you Pascal uses more Maxwell like Architecture aporach so that Kepler to Maxwell gap won't be so obvious this time..
(by cuda it goes from GK110 3.5 > GM200 5.2 > GP100 6.0 - extra unified memory)

At least not by full mini GP104, it will be enough to counterpart AMD Polaris which R9-390 - Fury area.. By Nvidia its that extra blank gap between 980GTX - 980Ti stock area..

nvidia will be pointing out GM204 vs GP104 again, it was the same by GM204 vs GK104.. While selling them a lot higher, again :F

There will be some performance increase, depending on how good the Polaris SKUs from AMD are and just enough to make the upgrade worthwhile.

GTX1070 will of course be the best buy, as usual. I expect the GTX1080 to be better than the GTX980 Ti, otherwise why buy it?
