And a single 980ti competes pretty well will 980 SLI afaik, depending a bit on the game.

Yep...especially in games that don't support sli.

AMD have to make an 14nm GPU that is at least as powerful as GTX1080,
No RGT will provide great BfB for a particular resolution. While the GTX 1080 can offer an improved 4K resolution, is it enough to be the superb 4K offering given the higher asking price? Especially if there is Vega and GP100 inbound in 6-8 months?

They are NOT interested in the furthering the high end ($500-$600) market right now in 2016.
Exactly, excellent 1440p, while good entry VR for say almost half that is where the RTG group is making their marketing.

I don't know what to think. AMD is sure holding their cards(no pun intended) close to their chest on this one. So far it's looking they're going to get a major beat down. If the GTX 1070 turns out to be as good and as cheap as it's supposed to be. Then AMD better be holding 5 aces. Because they're going to be screwed BIG TIME otherwise. Nobody in their right mind is going to buy the new batch of AMD cards unless they seriously kick ass and are priced seriously competitively. Not even me. As much as it pains me to say it. Because so far as I can tell these new AMD cards are going to be relatively weak. And almost certainly nowhere near Fury. But like I said, they could be keeping their secrets held tight for now. And maybe for good reason. It'd sure be a huge slap in Nvidia's face if they go all in(like they apparently are). And then, right as they think they've got it won, AMD pulls a platinum diamond encrusted rabbit out of their ass. Frankly it doesn't seem like a very likely scenario. But one never knows. It ain't over 'til...

Well the GTX1070 wont be as good as "it's supposed to be"...so there's that.

Of course they wont be close to fury, these are lower-to-mid range cards, around the 390 level. Vega in 2017 is furys replacement. AMD is keeping quiet because either

A.) polaris is far better than pascal, with a huge advantage in that tiny die, perhaps it is more power efficient or scales better. AMD knows this, knows that they can match nvidias performance at a lower price, and can make a hefty profit while nvidia will have to cut prices across the board to keep up, a reversal of what happened with the 300 series. They keep this news secret until just before pascal's launch, then reveal Polaris, and ruin nvidia's launch day sales.

B.) Polaris is weaker than AMD expected. They have gone on about power efficiency, but now about performance much, suggesting polaris isnt the smash hit they expected. They are keeping mum until they can figure something out marketing wise to sell polaris.

My guess is A.) is more likely. Polaris is an enhanced GCN design, and has a smaller die than nvidia, much like evergreen vs fermi. And polaris is the first major project that lisa su has been CEO for a majority of, so this could be the fruits of AMD's labor. If AMD can pull a $300 card, with the rumored 390/390x performance at ~130 watt TDP, AMD would be in a pretty good spot.

I have a dual Fury X build and I think I will wait for the 1080Ti or Vega cards in 2017 since my specs can handle most of the games in 2K resolutions and I really don't have much interest in VR.

It never ceases to amuse me that, whenever a new flagship GPU appears from either side, all hell breaks loose.

Don't you guys ever learn?

Ah, you have made the mistake of not learning that we don't learn. Who is more foolish? The fool or the fool who follows. Or the fool who watches the fools who follow those that follow fools.

I love the releases it's like the new Manolo Blahnik shoe ranges - sooo exciting my luvvies!!! :D

As one would expect since they are targeting midrange and below, where they will be competing against Nvidia's 28nm cards until the fall.

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but Polaris isn't looking too high end: http://videocardz.com/59725/nvidia-gtx-1080-polaris-10-11-directx12-benchmarks

Polaris 10 isn't high end its midrange hence why the fury beats it. The ONE polaris 11 benchmark doesn't even show it beating the polaris 10 card and it's at 1080P low...so that page is about as useless as useless could be.

so if Polaris 10 XT will be as powerful as GTX 980 with 110-120w for $250-299. Will you buy it?

It would be funny if AMD would go Battlefield 1 WP on this one...Internet will melt again and AMD fans jumping and saying R.I.P Nvidia. Trolling Nvidia. that would be awesome.

I (for e.g) won't - because i need more power, a lot more power. I want something that can destroy content to replace my couple of 3 year old cards. TBH, i want something even more powerful than what GTX 1080 probably can afford. The problem is, i got to wait another god damn year almost.

I feel sorry for AMD with so many people having unrealistic expectations. At this point they are a very small company! It makes sense to avoid direct competition with Nvidia, and go after the low-mid segment. Most likely their architecture will be inferior to Pascal mid-range but they will have a few months to gain back market share before they are forced to drop prices in the fall. I'd call that a win, but I suspect most on here will be seriously disappointed.

You are missing the quote "in VR" or "under these specific circumstances" it doesn't have anything specifically listed as to when that happens.
or "1080 faster than 980 sli in games where sli doesn't work properly or has terrible scaling"

It is launching as midrange. More than likely they just can't get yields high enough on top end cards and want to empty old stock.

Polaris is NOT a replacement for Fury, that will come in 2017 with Vega cards.

Polaris is low-mid end, 390X performance for $200-$300.

doesn't have to be 390x performance to not be a fury replacement. It wont replace fiji at the price point, but it can sure as hell be as fast as it. Only one rumour claims 390x, most recently its said to be as fast as fury.

If GTX 1080 is as fast as GTX 980Ti, R9 490X being slower than R9 Fury wouldn't make any sense at all. It means it would be vastly slower than GTX 1080 then.
