I'm gonna replace my 5960X with Zen if the performance is within 10% of the 5960X. To hell with intel's 1000$ and 1700$ CPUs.

What makes you think amd high end won't be a $1000 cpu? None of history would show that amd won't sell them for that amount. Remember the fx 51-62 all sold in that price range.

intel made it easy - since Sandy Bridge there has been close to zero performance increase in CPU department... so if AMD can match IPC with old Sandy bridge and pack 4, 6 or 8 cores - it can not only compete but win not only intels mainstream, but also HEDT and even newest - 2016. june HEDT - witch has recorded the least IPC performance gains and the most price gains (vs previous gen HEDT) in CPU history ever. so bbasicaly intels performance has stayed in year 2010 level (tough 2010 level intel smoked everything amd had..... till now)

If this is right: "Bulldozer has ~ the same IPC as Core2. So, Wolfdale +5% = Nehalem, Nehalem +19% = Sandy Bridge, SB +3% = Ivy Bridge, IB +11% = Haswell, HW + 3.3% = Broadwell."

Then we have: 1.05*1.19*1.03*1.11*1.033 = 1.4756 => 47.56%

And then, if AMDs 40% IPC gain stands, it will be 7-10%-ish behind Broadwell.

Sadly, we're very much in the dark. We got a ballpark estimate of the IPC, but we don't know clock speeds, we don't know TDP, we don't know pricing and availability... we don't know jack.

AMD was also very competitive at the time the FX 51 was on sale. ATM, they dont have that advantage. So even if Zen is competitive, they wont price it into HDET territory, simply because they cant afford to. If Zen isnt a massive success, then AMD is going to wither on the vine, and the 2-300 market is many orders of magnitude larger then the 400+ market, which is orders of magnitude larger then the 1000+ market.

They may very well have a $1000 lineup, using a 16 or 32 core CPU and quad/octo channel memory. But baseline 8 core zen will be competing against the i5/i7 reign, and I dont think AMD is stupid enough to jack up the prices higher then what intel has before they can take back some market share/ mindshare.

I never said the baseline would. I said history would say if AMD releases a top end chip they will price it as such.

If zen is competitive with the 5960X then AMD should be able to sell it for a lower price and make up the difference simply in number of sales. There are still a lot of us AMD Loyalists that are waiting for the upgrade.

Except that the new intel chips are already hitting the market. That leaves intel the ability to mark the "old" 5960x's for peanuts.

Edit: But then again based on those numbers, Excavator is only around 15% faster on single threading benchmark than Steamroller, but yeah, full 30% more than Bulldozer.

Not that I feel comfortable spending $1700 for a CPU, but if you look back in 1993 when Intel released the Pentium 66MHz cpu they priced it at about $1000. Looking at the price of inflation, we're very close to a $1700 CPU back then. Technology has gotten CHEAP compared to back then. Thankfully scale of the industry keeps price relatively low on cutting-edge technology.

Now AMD, come on....force intel to price products lower. I want that 10-core beast, but I want it at $900. ;-)

I purchased the CPU during severe Intel CPU shortage in Canada. Nothing else was available. Besides, I'd rather go for 65w cpu. My build is tiny as hell.

AM4 socket has all of my attention! Being able to take either a CPU or APU in the same socket/motherboard is going to be great!

Think of it. Someone could start a build with a reduced budget starting out with the best board with an APU then buy the monster CPU and discrete GPU as the budget allows. Win Win!

There is a good chance they will. 990fx has 38 PCIE lanes, compared to z170's 20 lanes, and x99's 48 lanes (40 from cpu, 8 from chipset). now, AMD is still 2.0, but the 800 series similarly had more lanes then intel did. I wouldn't be surprised if this carries into AMD's next chips.
