My solution to this is to wait a month. Unless you typed in a code like destruct sequence 2 code 1 1 A 2B on your graphics card hoping to get one I would not worry. They are going to be inflated because of early demand and limited availability. If anything just wait a month and get the custom PCB variants that will inevitably be out and provide not only better cooling but better overclocking.

970 won't come down in price any further, as it already has come down in the past half year and a new GPU release generally doesn't move the price point much. However I still wouldn't buy one today - if you are looking at that price point, strongly consider AMD's alternatives as they have a LOT more under the hood at that price, and they get a lot more TLC (driver wise) these days than the 970. The 970 for all its performance is also the worst job Nvidia has ever done at cutting up a GPU - something that a 3.5/4GB card will run into when it gets pushed, especially now that VRAM bottom requirements are going up.

I never said the 280 was more expensive because it was a rebadge, I said the only reason the 280 was that cheap was because it was a rebadge of a 2 year old $450 GPU.

And yes, new processes are expensive. That has been proven time and time again in the PC market. The reason the 480 is so cheap comes down to it being a much smaller chip, hence the poorer early yields dont affect it nearly as much as the larger 1070/1080. Pitcarn was only 212mm2 and came in at 250/350, that doesnt mean that 28nm was as cheap as 40nm from the previous gen. Small GPUs are typically much cheaper then big ones at the beginning of a new transistor size, this is nothing new.

Sad part is these "FE" are hamstrung with a generic Heat-pipe cooler, and not the Vapo-Chamber like a GTX1080. Given it now has good 1440p performance, and 8Gb of GDDR5, it's offering a jump that the 970 didn't really ever provide for 1440p. It feels like a nice 30% movement taking into account a 970 was pretty marginal at 1440p, while (1070) still not truly/entry 4K. For 36% higher from the 970 (ref), this basically reference build is not moving the goal post any. Hopefully, AIB customs can offer more and hold pricing to $400-420.

Edit: Let's say you bought a AIB custom 970 back Oct-Nov '14 for $360 and had 1080p, and that was great. Then around May '15 you start a hankering for one of those nice 1440p G-Sync as this 970 can run that, so you grab one for like IDK $700. But at 144Hz it's good, but yeah its' more often high settings and not stellar FpS... but it's offering fun for more than a year. Though now this 1070 can bring that monitor a whole new experience for say $400-420 when AIB customs show, while you might see >$200 in resale on the 970 it seems to make a good play.

Considering you well might be able to purchase a 27" 1440p panel w/Adaptive Sync, and a card that gets in this realm of FpS for <$500 soon. Nice to see how far we're moving in less than 2 years.

Usually they drop in anticipation of the new model, you know to clear out old stock and make room for new. But no dice. 980 = 400$ refurbed, 450$ new... I don't get it.

Nvidia models rarely drop more than a few (insert local currency here). They will leave them where they are. People will buy them, for any of a hundred reasons. None of them have been produced for about 60 days now (price reflects that plus the demand rate), so as long as people are buying them, their non-sale price will remain where they are on the 970's and 980's.

Correction...the Founders Edition which no one should buy because the cooler sucks and you are literally paying extra for the same card that others will get a short time later...is on sale.

Got a friend wanting one but so far, nothing but Founders and all sold out. Man there are a lot of suckers if they can't wait a tiny bit for non founders.

yea i am doing same kinda upgrade, got the monitor 3 weeks ago. waiting for the gtx1080 i want to be in stock to buy. i own Acer version that monitor that is pretty much identical in specs to that one.

So after reading all these comments, is it safe to say that i will not be getting a gtx 1070 for under $400 usd until next year?!?! And am i better off buying a 970 while i wait for the 1070 to go down or what? My price range is 400 max for a gpu and i kinda need one quick...pretty much asap...and just another thing i should mention, if i do somehow get a 1070...will they release aftermarket cooling cards for example the evga ssc or ftw edition? Thanks for the feedback

1070 will be available under $400 this year. I suggest go for a custom one rather than reference design. FE cards are costly and will perform lower than custom cards. No good reason not to wait a month for it.
Don't buy 970. It has only 3.5 GB of good vram. Old gen cards get obsolete quickly example kepler. There is no reason why the same won't happen with Maxwell. GCN cards are kind of exception though, especially hawaii.

Yep, and it doesn't help prices of the 980, 980 Ti, Fury and Fury X haven't really changed and the GTX 1070 beats the lot.
