GTX 1080 or 1070 fan Poll

Hi guys,

Now that both cards have successfully been reviewed, I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread/poll on what graphics card you would choose if you had the disposable income for either one if them.

Please give detailed info for reasons why if need be.

I'd really like to see what the general TECHPOWERUP community would invest in.

I'm glad you specified "if you had the disposable income"! I do NOT have disposable income for the one I would choose (MSI GTX 1080 X). It's currently listed at $719 on Newegg.

Maybe instead I'll see if anyone has a used MSI 980 Ti they want to part with. Much more powerful than my 980, and fine for my setup for a couple years at least.

I just ordered a MSI GTX1070 Gaming X , I don't need a GTX1080 since I still play at 1080p.
A GTX1070 is plenty for me to play all my games at ultra with all eye candy for some years to come!
I may buy a 1440p monitor sometime and still then a GTX1070 is plenty for years.

Definitely GTX1070 - twice over.
I have a brand-spanking-new and very boring mini-ITX rig without dGPU... Plus I'll need one more for my brother, who just finished a transition from PS4 to a less boring mini-ITX PC.
The only problem is that there are still no sub-240mm versions. All currently announced/leaked reference and non-reference designs are 270mm or larger which won't fit in my LianLi (but will fit into my brother's bitfenix prodigy).
If nothing comes up by September, I'll have to settle for a used itx-friendly GTX970 (which might get even cheaper by then).

Personally, I am looking at the GTX 1080 but waiting on aftermarket variants with custom PCB's (Like the Classified) to see performance differences and then decide.

While I can afford to buy both cards (even at current rip off prices), I see no point in doing so at the moment.
Don’t really have the time to play around; stock and prices aren’t there; any issues are unknown (beside the FE cooler sucking) and drivers are still to immature; …

I’ll just wait, see what AMD brings to the table, and then wait a bit more.
I’m not in any hurry, and will probably just wait till next year. Thought I would build a new system this year, but it’s been quite underwhelming so far.
So far it seems like 2017 will be THE year to pointlessly waste coinage on a shiny new cardboard box.

Hi guys,

Looks like we are neck and neck on the Two video cards.

Me personally I'm looking at the GTX 1070 atm. Just waiting for custom AIB variants.

Why? Because its looking like the better value for money card. I purchased the GTX 980 before I even knew a GTX 970 was coming and got a little disappointed with the difference in value they both represented.

I would really like to see what the AMD Radeons will have to offer before I pull the pin on and recent GTX.

I voted Other.

I always like to have the best of everything if I can and that means the top model. However, the 1080 and 1070 are actually midrange cards masquerading as high end cards so I'm not interested. Instead, I'd get the 1080 Ti with the full Pascal GPU when it comes out. This should hopefully have the horsepower to run games at 4K at high framerates (144Hz+) like today's cards do at 1080p with no SLI needed, with all its issues. I'm running it now and can tell you it's a royal pain when something doesn't run right.

600can for the 1070, 900can for the 1080.... on a fixed income.... still have a 1080 monitor.... neither until the non-founder editions come out! 1070 then.

$780AU for the 1070, $1,200AU for the 1080, so neither until the gouging stops and prices drop dramatically.
Ideally I would like a GTX1070.

Depends on how you define "disposable income". Computer upgrades is very, very low on my list of things to spend money on these days (because frankly I don't need them), so the day I would even think about getting a GPU in that price class I would have a lot of money, so then I would just get the best I could get.

Until that incredibly impropable day, the vote is Other, or whatever gets you the most performance for no more than €200, if even that.

Not saying it's AMD, but I've seen a benchmark of a card that scored twice as high as the GTX1080 in FS Ultra.
There's been some interesting scores pop up there.

Assuming I had the disposable money, then the 1080 for sure. if I had the money to do so, why not get the better card? Unless, of course, I could take the 1070 and keep the difference in price for myself. I don't need all that power and the 1070 uses less energy.

Currently SLI GTX 970 is still on par with a single GTX 1080 at 1440p or 2160p. Brute performance wise, there is little reason for me to upgrade. And since I aim for 96fps/96hz on games, the SLI 970 can just about pull it off. The 1080 is hit or miss depending on the game.
Though the low VRAM of the 970 does present problems at times, and of course the game engine has to be able to support SLI (whether native or forced i.e. AFR2)

GTX 1070 is an overall performance downgrade vs SLI 970, though comes with some inherent benefits, such as the increased VRAM and being a single card solution.
Considering the pricing of the average 1070 (AIB with good cooling solution), replacing the SLI 970 with a single 1070 is a respectable option, however not one I will be going for.

As I am not adverse to multi gpu setups, and have had mostly success in the past, I have considered going to SLI 1070.
However, looking at what we know so far, it seems as SLI 1070 does not offer that much of an improvement as one would imagine. I would expect scaling of no less than 90%, though that is not the case, and it may be driver related - it may not.

• Used SLI GTX 970 G1 Gaming £220 (SLI £440) [no upgrade required]
• GTX 1070 G1 Gaming £434 (SLI £868)
• GTX 1080 G1 Gaming £608

If you want the best performance/cost ratio, then SLI 970 is a clear winner still.
If you want single card solution on a 'gaming budget,' 1070 is obviously a good option
And if you want the fastest single card solution, you would choose the 1080.


This does once again make me reiterate my view that the 'little brother' 1070 products need to die out. Nvidia should make one performance card and one extreme card. The XX70 products serve only to confuse, complicate and muddy the market.

If I do upgrade it will be to a Waterforce 1080, or wait until 1080 TI launches. All the while, we should be keeping an eye out for AMD's offering, things could get interesting this time around.
