what size drives are you using
2 1/2" laptop or 3 1/2" Desktop ?
full size 3 1/2" will have a much higher power draw ( usb power will not be enough ),

So 3.5" drives you have, that won't work as @dorsetknob said.

what's the reason for eSATA

E-Sata is for External Hard Drives ( its not equipped with power connections just Data )
The Adapter you linked to is for 2 1/2" Drives which have a much lower power draw hence the USB power Adapter
IT IS NOT DESIGNED FOR DESKTOP DRIVES ( again which have a power draw way above what USB can Deliver thats both AMPS and Voltage )

That's Stupid. They should Tell on the box of the MB the 2.5 HDD will work and NOT 3.5MM

Read the advert you linked to.......... it says
""
2.5" Inch Hard Disk Drive SATA 22Pin to eSATA Data + USB Powered Cable 20 Inches""

Put it in your Spares draw untill you get a spare laptop drive or

Buyers Please note: Any returns for non-seller fault may be subject to a restocking and maintenance fee for up to 35%. So please make sure you are buying the correct item".

what you need is a 3 1/2" hard Drive External Enclosure with its own power supply and a E-SATA Cable

oK I know 2.5MM have low power but are there any eSATA Cables that have enough power to turn on 3.5MM HDD? [I think NOT]

"NO" and its 2 1/2" not 2,5mm>>>>> 3 1/2" not 3.5mm HDD
3 1/2" HDD Generaly Require a 12v power supply
USB does not supply 12V and cannot handle the higher Amperage required to spin/power up 3 1/2" HDD

eSATA Cables that have enough power

E-SATA Cables do not carry power just DATA

ITS INCHES NOT MILLIMETERS and yes if you use a THREE AND A HALF INCH HARD DRIVE IN AN EXTERNAL DOCK ENCLOSURE IT WILL HAVE A SUITABLE POWER SUPPLY
all you need then is a E_SATA Cable to connect your enclosure to youe E-SATA port

All so some eSATA ports disable onboard SATA ports on some motherboards. Not saying it's the case here but always worth knowing.

The usb plug furnishes 5v for a (two-and-a-half-inch) sata hdd. The esata/sata/usb 'linked' in 1st post will not work with a (three-and-a-half-inch) sata hdd. The cable in post 10, (ten), can be used, along with a 5v +12v power supply. Plug sata into hdd, plug p/s into hdd, plug esata into esata port. Now, turn on the p/s. Should work, works for me, , ,

I do this fairly often, cloning drives with this setup is much faster than through usb cloning.

You do not necessarily need a case to connect your hdd to your computer, just data & power.

-c-

To really confuse things(!): I bought a 'sata to ide and/or ide to sata' adapter for (seriously) $1.88 inc. shipping, (bought 3 actually). I have a drawer full of ide hdds, both 2 1/2 inch, and 3 1/2 inch, If your mobo does not have an ide plug on it, you can still connect ide hdds to it.

This thread scares me.

So OP wants to install and OS on an external but unless that esata is connected to sata on the board (my old case actually had sata to esata directly from the board to the front IO) then it's going to be slow.

Soooo just get a full external hdd dock that has takes wall outlet power and stick a stupid long sata connection from the drive to the board or just go with USB3.0? As for the point of running the OS on an external is pretty dull.

This thread scares me.

Now me Being a cheapscape and inclined to Ghetto ( its Cheap),
I would route a SATA power lead and a Connected To Motherboard SATA Data Cable to the outside of the Case then hot Connect Drive As needed

Please DO NOT TRY THIS UNLESS YOU FEEL COMPETENT AND CONFIDENT OF DOING THIS...................................AT YOUR OWN RISK AND LIABILITY of course.
