275w / 1.7 (expectation from 14nm vs 28nm process improvement) = 160 watt, close to what 480 actually consumes

While Raja promised "up to 2.8" more efficiency. Does anyone remember the context of "2.8"?
Where the feck are are the promised power savings from "architectural improvements"?

Write that down: 390X performance for 40% of its power consumption and half of its price. And ofc a big win for the customers!

And for whoever needs more than that but doesn't have the money for custom 1070, wait a few weeks for custom and factory oced RX480s.

Just a reminder...

For anyone needing to be harsh on RX480, custom cooler isn't good enough and power consumption isn't optimal. Custom ones will make a better cooler and that levels of power consumtpion isn't a problem for anyone eitherway. So, we have the great base for the consumers in the $150-300 area of GPU offers with RX480.

And CF is GREAT when there is a profile for that equalling 2X480 to a 1080 as AotS demo from AND showed a month ago. This product wasn't hyped at all. It is just where we normal people wxpected it to land

That efficency was referred to the RX470 card, IIRC.

So Polaris is slightly better than Maxwell on perf/watt... =(

That's not the best example as drivers tend to detect furmark and do things, but 1.7 is what is expected from pure node shrink, yet Raja said they invested into "architectural improvements" and achieved "historic jump".

AMD should copy paste HD7990 cooler to all their product, their stock coolers always were p o c.

Having a smaller R&D budget isn't an excuse it's a real thing... I was expecting lower power consumption, but performance is exactly what was expected.

What will please people who hates AMD:

Better than 1080 performance, draws power close to Intel iGPU, overclocks 200% and only costs less than $200. And best reference cooling and lower than 50C operating temp. There is your dream card.

I think the war started when someone said single 480 would beat the gtx 1070 when its OC and crossfire 480 will beat the gtx 1080 with $200 less.

To me, the problem is that it achieves less while drawing more power.

If it used around 130W to achieve what it does, it wouldn't be that big a problem BUT, since it uses almost the same power draw as 1070 WHILE being around 50% slower, that makes it bad. Only the price can rescue it but shops are making that seem like a mirage so ...
