I tough nvidia will fix ur 0.5k mb VRAM with drivers...

GTX 970 didn't defeated R9 290.
RX 480 didn't defeated 980.

Looks logical to me..

I told you I don't have problem with 3.5gb vram. Just buy your darn AMD card and happy with it.

To me, the problem is that it achieves less while drawing more power.

If it used around 130W to achieve what it does, it wouldn't be that big a problem BUT, since it uses almost the same power draw as 1070 WHILE being around 50% slower, that makes it bad. Only the price can rescue it but shops are making that seem like a mirage so ...
Don't forget that GTX 1070 price > 400~450$ minimum.

RX480 4GB 200$ / 8GB - 240$.

I told you I don't have problem with 3.5gb vram. Just buy your darn AMD card and happy with it.

Thank you  already did 3 years ago.

What will please people who hates AMD:

Better than 1080 performance, draws power close to Intel iGPU, overclocks 200% and only costs less than $200. And best reference cooling and lower than 50C operating temp. There is your dream card.

Dude, you started this thread and it grew horrendously long legs and ran round in circles shouting "I'm awesome". You posted graphs showing it to be better than 1080 in CF, cooler than this, faster than that.....

If you construct a thread that you purposefully prod along with excessive hype - you have to take the punches at the end. Stop blaming Nvidia fanbois and AMD haters. The hype fell way damn short. The stock reference card is damn nasty and needs an AIB solution to help it. I know the AIB's will make it work better but the card that AMD has released has got the initial 390X release all over it.

It's like me listening to English football commentators watching England play. Always a reference to 19 bloody 66. I don't mind the team, feel sorry for them actually but the incessant hype is what irks people. When you hype something so much (and YOU did) and it doesn't come up to much at all in the grand scheme, well, come on man - take your medicine and accept the fault.

The reference model is great if you cant afford better and don't mind the noise and it's limitations. But pay a little bit more and you'll get better. Like the 1080 FE, the RX 480 needs a partner to actually do the legwork to make it a proper success (and I'm sure they will) but AMD have done it again and released a lazy ass plastic piece of hot noise.

Vega better be far better or AMD ARE in trouble.

Lets first wait for 6gb GTX 1060 with memory bus that even ATI 3870 didn't used....

GTX 980 Ti at stock had 42dba....

So this isn't that bad....

I made no comparisons to Nvidia. I alluded to AIB's, even saying the FE is in need of AIB rescue as well. My post was a response to the OP bemoaning people having a go at AMD.

FWIW, until we see AIB's we can't comment but it'll push the price well into mid £250's in UK I'd imagine. At that price I'd rather have a 390X.

It's also half the price. It was never intended to compete with the 1070 and 1080s.

250 vs 220.
2years vs 3years - warranty.

390x - 700+ Watts Power Supply (Suggestion)
RX480 - 350 Watts Power Supply (Suggestion) >?<

So 390x isn't good option for every one =P.

Benchmark Scores 3050 scores good 15-20% lower than average, despite ASUS's claims that it has uber cooling.
1.5% OC on Stock RX 480%.
That was 5%, I think.
And 13% OC on memory.

since it uses almost the same power draw as 1070 WHILE being around 50% slower, that makes it bad.
No, AIB versions of it will still be decent buy.
It is 390/390x-ish perf, better then them at tesselation and other weak points, it's priced decently and has lots of mem.

And vs 1060 (3/6Gb, lolz) 20-40w difference won't matter much.

The bad part is, how this sets expectations for Vega. =[
There was so much talk about how they focused on being cool.
How they were months ahead of competitor.
Yet that 2.8 improvement never materialized.

What we got was very slightly better than 1.8 perf/w improvement vs Hawai, which is rather close to what they said node shrink should give out of the box anyhow.

It's also supposed to be @ a lower power category but it isn't.

The performance was never meant to reach 1070 or 1080: i'm perfectly fine with that. What i'm not fine @ all is the amount of power it uses for what it reaches: it should achieve that with 25-30W less.

BECAUSE it uses roughly the same power as the 1070, it "becomes" directly compared in performance / watt. What should save it from comparisons (price) is being eroded by (e-)shops.

From the performance per $ standpoint I think 480 is really good.

Perf per $ is a cosy metric but it doesn't take other things such as noise (I'm big on quiet PC's) into consideration. AIB's to the rescue (again).

I have a HD 7850 and it uses a 6 pin power.
Looking at the reviews it seems the RX 480 and the GTX 970 are pretty much on pair.
Looking at my local shop
The GTX 970 costs 52000 rsd or 468 dollars
The RX 480 will cost 35000 rsd or 314 dollars
I believe I will upgrade soon to the RX 480 when the custom cards come out.

I can't understand you people ...

Do you really that care about 30f watts ?

OCing my 3930k from stock(130w TDP) to 4,2ghz = (200w TDP.)

My 290x has 250w~330+w TDP , but you are forgetting the problem that 290x is using only 10w in DESKTOP 3440x1400@75hz, and most of us are gaming ~20h and less per week...

Extra >
30w 24/7 365 Days = 20$.

AMD cards will generally use more power because they are not stripped down gaming centric cards. It's like buying a Impreza vs Civic. You gonna get that AWD in the Impreza whether you want it or not, though in most cases it's a welcome addition. In this case it's compute, oh hey you get real async compute too lol.

I don't care about 30w, but if low end card is 30w behind, what will happen to Vega?
I also don't like them pulling more than 75w over pcie.

Again, perf is fine, AIB card with 8 pin connector and custom cooler is still very interesting to me. But it's not about 480 being or not being competitive (we don't know until 1060 is there).

I recall TSMC Apple chips were better than Samsung's (consumed less power) that might be partially explaining why.
But in the bloody end, reasons wouldn't matter.

And I also want to know, wtf is this slide about:

The slide refers to the RX470 IIRC: that's where the max perf / watt gain should be seen.

I find it incredible that users that are willing to pay up to $1000 for the latest and greatest graphics cards are really worried about power consumption.

Marketing nonsense. Your eye is drawn to the 1.7X and 2.8X in bold red letters but a lot of people miss the "up to" right above the numbers.

No one really cares about it unless you're a miner. Otherwise it's the easiest platform for which to argue your agenda up or down.

Benchmark Scores 3050 scores good 15-20% lower than average, despite ASUS's claims that it has uber cooling.
The slide refers to the RX470 IIRC: that's where the max perf / watt gain should be seen.
It clearly has 480 in the title.
