Well i have had coolers of XFX with a cover over the pads, but yes looks kinda odd.

If i remember they are put together in china then shipped to were ever, so going on a limb here i think they received a batch and took the cooler off put a cover over the pads and cleaned the paste of just so we can have a look at the card in more detail. And if the cooler is put back on right it's a none issue.

The VRM thermal pad still has the protective plastic on it in that picture, it clearly says REMOVE yet it looks like it was assembled like that anyway judging by the deformation of the pad.

Yeah you can see the hole in the plastic where it has the mounting screw through it.... I wouldn't plug one of these in without checking....

Sapphire also has Quick-connect/release fans that are not only for easy cleaning but part of their new RMA process should a fan break.
Instead of shipping them the entire card for repair, they simply send you the fan.
nice! though im broke for the time being so.. good to know. :)

No clear side view shot, once again.
That depends on how you mount the card.
To most people mounting it in a tower, the fans are at the bottom, the backplate is the top, and the logo on the edge is the side view.

This thing looks really plain. XFX's 200 series design were the best looking to me. Anyways anyone know when are these custom boards going to be on retail shelves?

YES! Those 200 series cards are gorgeous. The newer ones look like cheap plastic junk.

Well, thank you I guess, haha. I love this card, excellent overclocking capabilities, low temperatures, low noise and great design!

EDIT: I forgot, I would really like a backplate, but the PCB is also completely matte black.

Yep, you can also see the little hole the screw went thru.

That will make you think twice before buying from XFX.

Honestly I think too much is being made of it. If you've got a publicity copy, you're going to leave that on there, so as to not have to deal time an again with sticky or tearing thermal pads. This one-off is probably not just seeing this one photo op.

Yea this probably never even went into the test apparatus. More mockup of components that someone test fitted and probably no even a GPU on the PCB.

The RX 480 has better image quality at 1080 dp than Nvidia has at any res or frame rate......I have both and I'd take the 480 any day right now just because of that, framerate is not everything. Whatever AMD is doing, I hope they win with it.

VRM design is very similar to his (In my opinion it is the same). Are they from same PCB design?

I'm curious, why would one want to remove the fans from your GPU's heat-sink. Unless XFX is going to start offering fan upgrades? Or easier for fan replacement,to cut down on RMA costs? I am curious to know the reason they did this.

Easier to clean or replace in event of failure

I've got the 1288/2000 DD XFX RX480 and the PCB looks identical to me, except that XFX only has 5 phase voltage and a 3 pipe cooler. The others are 6 phase and 4 pipe. It still clocks 1380 without heat issues though.
