High-end Skylake processors to get yet another socket

Intel is a big fan of swapping out CPU socket as often as they can, it seems that with the successor to Broadwell-E, the Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X (yes the X is new) we'll move to Socket 2066. new information surfaced.

The platform for all this is called Basin Falls platform and includes new processors and a chipset refresh with a new socket . Socket R4, as the official code name reads is getting 2,066 pins and provides a home to two new Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X series.

Skylake-X will include six , eight and ten core CPUs with a TDP around 140 watts and thus follow Broadwell-E . Under the name Kaby Lake-X there are also will be quad-cores for socket 2066, with fewer PCI Express lanes and only two memory channels. Also for Kaby Lake-X Turbo Boost 3.0 is not supported. There will also be a new chipset which includes ten integrated USB 3.0 ports and eight SATA600 ports. It is still unclear whether USB 3.1 will also be part of the chipset. We do know that there are up to 24 PCI Express 3.0 lanes , and a built-in Intel LAN controller are present. According to the leaked slides, the new processors come to market in the second half of 2017.

Maybe with the development expense growing, and the tick-tock dev cycle being abandoned, intel are looking to shave down the complexity of their chips to increase their margins even further?

People can happily sit on anything Sandy Bridge onwards without feeling much of a need to upgrade for at least four years these days. Once the urge to scratch the upgrade itch becomes too much to bear and/or the IPC/feature gaps become too large, most will probably look at upgrading their motherboard anyway, so I don't see much of an issue with Intel changing the socket, especially if it brings new features to the platform.

Edit:

On a side note, it may be possible Intel is somewhat forced to change the chipset if any major revision to the feature set is needed, as unlike much older sockets like LGA-775, much more is integrated within the CPU. No more just updating the northbridge.

It looks like they are adding the higher end of the mainstream chips to the X platform. This will be good for people that use one videocard and dont need 6+ cores.

How is this raping the consumer? Intel is not forcing anyone to buy their new CPUs. I see this as Intel keeping their promise to keep advancing the state-of-the-art and offer consumers more choices. That's a good thing.

The different socket does not bother me a bit as it is likely the old chipsets supporting the smaller sockets would not support he new CPUs anyway - not to mention the latest USB, SATA, RAM and other standards/protocols/features all the other hardware industries are advancing too that future motherboards will support.

The Kaby Lake-X SKUs will feature a 112W TDP on a 14nm node. This means that we might be looking at much higher clock speeds compared to current generation quad core models. In fact, the Kaby Lake family uses a more optimized architecture compared to Skylake which will allow Intel to finer tune its performance for better performance and efficiency. But all of the processors should be Kaby Lake-X, not just some of them. On top of that, Kaby Lake-X processors clearly look like the inferior products of the bunch.

The only way it makes sense is if they're working on phasing out the HEDT platform. If that were the case though, you'd think they'd design it for LGA 2011-3 or 4. Sense, this isn't making much.

Then it dawns on me: Kaby Lake-X maybe Intel's response to Zen. It may be LGA 1151 that is on the chopping block.

120w used to be mainstream back when Intel and AMD were competitive with each other. Also, nothing stopping Intel from putting low wattage CPUs on LGA 2066.

But that's kinda like calling the Toyota Avalon (Toyota's flagship) an "inferior" car because it is not a Lexus even though both are made by Toyota.

Again, I see this as me having more choices. And I like that.

And I see the Avalon as a Camry with extras, nothing special.
If I'm going to pay more for a new socket and chip, I expect fireworks (not literally)

(At least here in the USA) The Avalon is bigger than the Camry. It's actually a Lexus GS without all the bells and whistles.

Here they are the same thing, rebadged and some luxuries tossed in.
I avoid them and their drivers on the road.

Well, I've owned a Avalon XLS (and other Toyotas) and driven many other Avalons and Camrys and the Avalons are considerably more than (though very similar to) Camrys. The biggest difference is the size and comfort. The Avalon is bigger all around, especially nice for adult size rear passengers. It has a considerably smoother and significantly quieter ride too.

Most people (except Avalon owners) could not tell the different unless the cars were sitting side-by-side (or you were inside the cars). If you have no or smaller kids, you don't need that much leg room or as many luxuries in the back seat so a Camry may be better suited for many.

That is NOT saying Camrys are "inferior" - they too are great, highly reliable cars. The Avalon is just another choice Toyota provides and that is my point as it relates to Intel processors.

I'm not really sure why anyone is surprised by this. It was pretty much expected that Skylake-E and KabyLake-E(now -X apparently) would be on a new socket. Just like Skylake and Kabylake use a different socket than Haswell and Broadwell.

True, but you have to admit it is almost bewildering the sheer number of sockets Intel has in existence right now.

Well, even in Australia, they are different cars. Though they were made in the same factory, the Avalon was made on an extended Camry chassis. I can see why you would want to avoid them where you are however - many are used as taxi cabs!

Anyway, newtekie1 is right (though he said nothing) and we need to get back on topic. I note via that WCCF Tech article said Intel will be coming out with yet another socket in 2020.

There are LGA 1151, LGA 1150, LGA 1155, and the LGA 2011 (did I miss any?) I suspect a couple of those will soon drop off when this new 2066 comes on line.

I read somewhere (sorry, can't find it now) that advancement in AMD technologies is actually hampered by their unwillingness to introduce new sockets. And maybe "unwillingness" is the wrong word and it is just that Intel has much deeper pockets to keep advancing the state-of-the-art.

1155 is EOL, and 1150 is all but EOL, we're just working through the left over stock still on the shelves.
