Hello guys , I have Asus Strix GTX 1070 OC , i5 4690 (non K), Asus H97-plus mobo and Gskill ripjaw 8gb 1600 mhz rams. When i m playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on ultra settings 1080p i m getting stutters sometimes and i made a ingame benchmark my min fps was too low i think :

Mountain Peak : 72.56 FPS (min:27 , max:127)
Syria : 48.85 FPS (min:3.47 , max:88.62)
Geothermal Valley : 50.15 FPS (min:10.61 , max:82)
Overall Score : 57.68 FPS

As you can see my min FPSs are too low and even max FPSs are low i think. I looked youtube gtx 1070 benchmarks with 1080p ultra settings . What i saw was generally like this (with i7 4790 and kingston 16 gb 1600 mhz rams):

Mountain Peak : 104.56 FPS (min:48 , max:173)
Syria : 82.85 FPS (min:39.47 , max:113.62)
Geothermal Valley : 76.15 FPS (min:49.61 , max:99)
Overall Score : 88.45 FPS

So whats the problem with my FPS and stutter? With these two systems i7 4790 cant be much of a difference right or i m getting bottleneck with my i5 4690? I be happy if u help me on this issue plz, thank you.

Most likely CPU. It's failing to feed your monster (GTX 1070). Also could be power supply, if it's too weak you might have degraded performs and stuttering.

I have Cooler Master G750M PSU, and there is my heaven 1080p benchmark also. There isnt any problem with gpu right?

nope.

with a 6600K i get no stutter at all in ROTTR nor i would have issue with my previous 4690K (stock or OC )

what driver are you on? latest? beta?

not that i ever had any issues reported by other user on my 1070 with any driver i installed since i got it, but probably ... if you are on a lower than latest driver, FAST Sync will be the issue.

also DX12 on ROTTR ... not helping ... i ran both with success but DX11 yield better performances (i need to rerun it soon ... i think )

No, i havent got Fast Sync open and my driver version is 372.54. But on that graph i post earlier CPU usage goes up to %98 sometimes, it s normal then?

let me rerun ROTTR in both mode (and still check fast sync settings in nvidia control panel just to be sure, standard and ROTTR custom )

and your PSU is fine.

just in case you run it DX11 or DX12?
(and nope a 4790K is not mandatory, i5 are perfectly fine for gaming, except in certain cases, where a i5 would still do fine, games rarely use more than 4 core, best example are MMO and RTS who use more core than that )

also check for power setting in nvidia control panel, put it on max if it's on optimized.

It's not just about amount of cores, clock speed is the key. There's almost 1GHz difference between two. It's easy to test: lower your graphics settings and run benchmark. If your min. fps stays about the same then it's processor.

And this is my benchmarks i just made. Power Management on nvidia panel is max, and vsync is application controlled which is Off in game and everything else is ultra. Btw this is in dx 11, i use windows 7.

that run is a bit better than the one your mention in the original post, although not on my level ...

mmhhhrrmm ... could you try to OC that 4690 via FSB, iirc non K CPU and H mobo can still be used for light OC via BCLK. (if you are not on stock intel cooler ofc :p )

currently trying fast sync and adaptive runs (DX11 ) well NVCP does not override ingame settings

sync off run then.

mmmhhh my geothermal min FPS are lower than with triple buffer

CPU usage i get 98-100% during the benchmark GPU usage 92-100%

I ve tried with low settings there has been a 5 sec freeze gpu usage went to %0 and cpu usage %100 which i marken on screenshot below . And on my second benchmark lots of the times cpu usage was %100. Whats that mean especially the 5 sec freeze?

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
i don't see a bottleneck tho ... a bottleneck is i.e.: when CPU is 100% and GPU is lower (around 50-60%) ideal is 50-60% CPU and above 80% GPU

heck ... my 100%/100% now feels weird ...

for the 5sec freeze ... i don't know ... well i have a MSI Armor and a 6600K and not a ASUS Strix with a 4690 so i can't replicate exactly the behavior you get, though if i underclock to 3.5ghz (as Skylake's IPC is not that much higher than Haswell ) my fps results keeps in the high range +/- 5fps

edit.... 100%/100% is the ideal, GPU 100% and lower than 100% CPU is : the next GPU upgrade will not bottleneck... rrmmhhhmrrm dang it i will need to upgrade my CPU if i go 1080 or next gen o_O (joking ... probably not going to happen )

also what was the result of the lower settings benchmark?

welll even a 2 core 4 thread i3 would handle ROTTR paired with the right card ... (my Alpha and his measly i3-4130T 3.2ghz max + GTX860M handle ROTTR fine at custom settings )

altho indeed a 4690 is not optimal for a 1070 in the op's case ... better of with a 4690K and a Z97

wait...

but ...
though if i underclock to 3.5ghz (as Skylake's IPC is not that much higher than Haswell ) my fps results keeps in the high range +/- 5fps
and
3.5ghz (i usually run my CPU at 4.4, min fps are a bit better but not much more +/-5)

setting all on ultra using triple buffered sync although
show 3.5ghz wouldn't be an issue for a 1070 (unless Skylake's IPC is way higher than they told us ... which is not the case )

@dassan it would be helpful if you add GPU clock and GPU temperature into that Afterburner graph to see what kind of GPU clock and temp value when you're running the benchmark.

Also, if you want to, try running the benchmark with high GPU fan speed (60-80%) from the start and see if the result is improving or not.

No problem at all with GPU temp and GPU clock and I think your CPU usage is fine, in my opinion, not a CPU bottleneck problem but you can try to maxed out your Turbo Boost multiplier on all your CPU cores so it will run at 3.9 Ghz on all 4 cores at full load and see what happened.

It's safer and easier to do than doing BCLK overclocking but please note that the option to change Turbo Boost multiplier individually in BIOS is not supported by all motherboard, so let's hope your board support it.

It s normal that cpu usage goes to %100 on that graph? And my mobo is Asus h97-plus

In my opinion and from my experience it's normal. Most of the time your CPU stay below 100% usage, while your GPU usage is close to 100%.

I'm not familiar with H97-Plus but once I built a PC for a friend with a H97M-Plus and i5 4460, so it should be similar BIOS-wise.
Enter BIOS, go to to Advanced Mode (press F7), then go to Ai Tweaker menu, find "CPU Core Ratio" setting, change the value to "Per Core", then the additional "n-Core Ratio Limit" (it's 4 new options and n is 1, 2, 3, and 4) option will appear, set it all (1-Core to 4-Core) to 39, save your BIOS setting, and you're good to go.

Try the benchmark again and see if the change improves your result or not. Good luck.

I did what u said saved and re-entered bios but eventho it was all set in 39 as you can see cpu shows as 3500 mhz. It shoudnt show as 3900?a1b1.jpg

i would worry if it didn't ... since mine does ...

CPU bottleneck happen when GPU is under 70% usage(roughly) and CPU is 100% if it's 100% and 100% then no bottleneck, altho indeed the frequencies can play a little role.

but your GPU, just as mine, goes up to 100% most of the time, as far as i see.

what i tried to explain is : GPU 100% CPU ~60-80% equal to room for a stronger GPU, GPU 100% CPU 100% equal to matched pair and probably no room for a stronger GPU (tho i doubt strongly that my 6600K would not handle it, be it in the current gen or in the next.) GPU 50% CPU 100% equal to a bottleneck (and that's not what's happening here )

probably not the PSU as i said ... unless it's a worn out and old model (which is not afaik )

edit: i just hope it's not the card ... because nvidia did a real nice mess lately ... i keep seeing report of that kind of issues about 1070 and 1080 (fortunately not on my 1070), unless it's ASUS who messed up ... not saying you should RMA (i had some good ASUS card through my PC "life") the card ... but i wonder what would they say about a 1070 that does not behave as another does even with a weaker CPU

@P4-630 use a 1070 with a i5-6500 i wonder what would be the ROTTR bench result on that configuration.

As far as I know, it will go to maximum boost clock only if you put a load on the CPU. Go to Windows and try to put some load to your CPU while checking the CPU clock, i should be running at 3900 Mhz.

You can do a short wPrime benchmark (32 M) while monitoring CPU clock with HWMonitor or CPU-Z.

this is very unlikely a hardware issue, and most certainly not the CPU.

Have you got nvidia Gamestream enabled in Geforce experience?

I lost a lot of performance when I forgot I had that enabled as it caches a stream of your game to your hard disk, and can result in performance spikes.

what is your disk usage like?

ohhh nice pointing ... (tho, the only fact of having Geforce Experience installed would be a failure  )

i can get FPS dips when i use OBS to record some video ... i guess shadowplay or gamestream are not lighter than that one.
