NVIDIA Announces the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

NVIDIA rolled out the GeForce GTX 1060, a new mid-range graphics card starting at US $199 (MSRP), with custom-design cards ranging between $199-229. Based on the 16 nm "GP106" silicon, this card has not just half the memory as the original GTX 1060, but also fewer CUDA cores. The card features 3 GB of memory across its 192-bit GDDR5 memory interface. It features 1,152 of the 1,280 CUDA cores present on the silicon. Other specs include 72 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. Its core is clocked at 1506 MHz, with 1708 MHz GPU Boost, and 8 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory. The card is targeted at gamers still on 1080p.

It will be interesting to see the difference between this card and the 6GB 1060 and also how much of a performance increase it still gives over the last Maxwell generation 960 for the same MSRP.

I find this card just very odd...I wish there was some different nomenclature for it more than just "3gb" since its different from its 6gb counterpart. I think the question will be how much dropping these cores effect the card as for the price its a pretty compelling offer.

looking forward to it. personally i'm interested to see how this going to fare against full fat 1060 6GB. did the performance are very similar between the two that nvidia decided not to call this 3GB version as 1060 SE

As it has 90% of cores but retains 100% bandwidth... It would have given 93-95% with full 6GB. As the memory is now only 3GB it should impact 1080p performance by further 2-10% depending on games. Overall it should give 87-90% of 1060 6GB performance.

For comparison 480 8GB gives 90% and 480 4GB gives 85%. GTX 970 also gives 85%.

Thus it could be a brilliant $200 card (if it is indeed available at that price).

Reference 480 maybe, but AIB 480's that stay locked at 1260 MHz have already proven to be as strong or stronger than the 1060 (And they are still cheaper).

Well... By that logic, AIB 1060 3GB overclocked at 1.9-2.0Ghz would still be faster.

And don't forget that 1060 consumes 40-50 watts less.

Did you even watch the benchmarks? The 1060 in the video is clocked at 2.1 GHz.

I don't care for benchmarks provided by Nvidia/AMD. According to TPU performance summary page for 1060 review.... RX 480 8GB at STOCK CLOCKS is 10% slower than GTX 1060 6GB at STOCK CLOCKS (at 1080p).

This here is a review of MSI RX480 which is factory overclocked and was reviewed 15 days later than 1060, so had more up-to-date drivers.

This class of GPUs would rarely need more than 3GB, and especially if you want to play >60 FPS, then the details will not be too high.

Agreed. At up to 1080p, it will be fine esp given use cases in HTPC or older PC upgrades.

At the moment, in Canada, 3GB version is 100CAD cheaper than 6GB version.

I will keep my eyes on it but, at 100CAD difference, going with 3GB version is an option.

Finally, a decently priced card to play WOW and Diablo 3. Since I am the very casual player and only play at 1920x1200, I think this card might be a winner for me.

The 3Gb is super close to the 6Gb ( The 3Gb seems to have driver issue with games like Tomb Raider, so they had to use a old driver). they are as fast/faster than a RX 480 in game that are not Amd optimized.

Yeah performance does seem pretty good, it's certainly gonna give those custom RX 470's a good run for their money.
