Im getting a protection circuit being triggered. Ive taken out the board and see that some of the solder is missing from the copper traces. I attached a picture of it. Could this be the cause of the protection circuit being triggered? All caps look ok, no bulging.

Have you tried booting outside of case with gpu, keyboard, mouse, monitor, psu hooked up. Mobo placed on elevated non conductive surface such as a box to allow gpu to seat properly?

If you have Id suggest a board replacement or try a trace pencil

If that board is still under warranty, contact the maker. Those exposed traces are not right.

If you are not highly skilled and practiced at soldering on multilayered circuit boards, I would leave it unless you see breaks in the traces. And in that case, I would have a qualified technician do it. If the traces still have full continuity, you might VERY CAREFULLY use a new pencil erasure to clean the tarnish/corrosion/dirt off the traces, then paint the traces with a thin coat of clear fingernail polish to keep air and moisture out.

But that is IF the board is no longer under warranty.

RMA if you still can do that.
Probably not, seems an old board.:(

The board is not under warranty. I do have skills in soldering but would like to know if the missing solder on the copper traces is breaking the circuit?

No. Electricity always follows the path of least resistance and that is definitely through the copper traces and not the tin alloys used in solder. The solder is typically there to protect the soft copper from physical damage.

As far as soldering skills, note I specifically said, "multilayered circuit boards". That is not the same as soldering a wire to a connection.

I'd be concerned with what caused the damage...

My first thought was it might have been a refurbished unit because I hope that would not have made past a quality assurance inspection the first time it left the factory.

@Neo2020 - what is the brand and model number of that device?

It is not damage... more like poor QC, as, it looks to be that some foreign substance got on the pcb and when it was dip soldered, the solder did not adhere to those traces.
It does not look to have affected any solder component pads, from those two pics in the OP.
I believe the problem is not a trace, it is a component problem and requires proper testing.

If the OP does not have the needed knowledge for this; then, his best bet is to take the unit to an electrician, who is knowledgeable in repairing them.
He may, even, be able to take it to some local electronics classes and ask the teachers if there is someone that could diagnosis it and repair it.
I have done this in some auto repair classes, at my local community college and they were happy to do the hands on... I had to pay for the parts, of course.

If your board died from a power surge I would probably recycle it. In the past I've repaired a board that had a screwdriver break a trace. If I recall correctly, I used sandpaper to clean the top layer off right at the break, then using masking tape to protect the good traces, I used molten solder to connect the broken trace. I used clear nail polish I to seal it.
