Game developer CryTek is planning to implement Vulkan API support for its in-house game-engine, CryEngine. To be released in November 2016 as CryEngine 5.3, CryTek will implement Vulkan across platforms, including PC (Windows desktop/notebook), and mobile (smartphones, tablets). The decision to implement Vulkan could have been fueled by Google's decision to make Vulkan the primary 3D graphics API of Android.

CryTek will also expand its support for DirectX 12, which it implemented in March 2016. With CryEngine 5.4, scheduled to be released in February 2017, along the sidelines of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), CryTek is introducing support for DirectX 12 native multi-GPU; deferred shading in sandboxed viewports, and multi-threaded rendering in sandbox.

Vulkan is looking like a real competition now. It's a powerful API and is crossplatform. Something DirectX isn't. Since devs want to target more platforms with minimal work, Vulkan is a more logical choice than DirectX.

And seeing how major studios use it already, things are looking pretty nice. Would be cool if Crytek released Vulkan patches for all 3 Crysis games. Now, that would be a reason to replay all 3 games again...

So a new Crysis game in 2018??

For now I don't believe they're in the business of making games in that capacity. Most development projects that aren't engine related have been put on hold. Crytek are largely working as a company that develops and licenses their engine to other developers as opposed to being a full-time game developer.

One correction; The primary purpose of Direct3D 12 multi-GPU is to use the generic wrapper instead of the native APIs (SLI/CrossFireX).

I totally wish for more devs to choose Vulcan over DX as Windows 10 won't be the only good OS for gaming and will allow all OSes to have a great API for games. 1st time that competition will exist for gaming bewteen OSes and that will be the best for all except for MS.

I understood that the Devs were modifying the CryEngine using reworked DX12, but I have not read anything about them adopting Vulkan.

What i find funny is the amount of bad graphical asset issues in the image for the article a huge number of rookie mistakes and problems that shouldnt be there should one look for even a tiny moment. Not the best image for a CryEngine article

That's correct. I'm pretty sure they're using v3.x of the engine and have heavily modified it so it's not like they can just upgrade to v5 without reworking 90% of the game they've already got. They'll no doubt add support such as Vulkan and DX12, but when and how is another question. I think they have hired some ex-Crytek staff who worked on the Crytek engine so that'll be of some benefit, and I also believe they get assistance from Crytek as well.
