It's also worth mentioning that GP102 supports FP16, which offers double performance over FP32. Even AMD will add support for this in Vega 10, and recently also added support for it in OpenGL. It would be interesting to see games in a couple of years try to utilize this in parts of their pipeline to boost performance.

Haha ikr. The 680 is a funny story in itself - Nvidia thought it would beat the 7970 easily, but didn't realize that AMD had simply rushed the card out before the drivers were ready. By the end of 2012 AMD had added a full 20%+ performance through drivers, and by now the 680 indeed performs about at 7870 levels.
The GHz Bios was the reason why 79xx performed so well. After the Bios update my old Asus 7950CUII reached 1200Mhz on the core stable @ 1,23Vcore

Right here on TPU were some well respected members saying that Nvidia wouldn't release a high end 1080 Ti GPU even a few months ago.

Am I respected? :p

I had said that 1080ti would not be released unless Vega is better than a 1080. It is a rumour still but hey, if I'm right, hopefully AMD don't price Vega at crazy levels.

This GPU will be in a really troubled position. With such spec it will NOT out perform GTX 1080 by much, in my opinion it will be somewhere around 10% faster than the GTX 1080 at best ( real performance, I think it will be less than 10%).

384-bit means they didn't have a choice (6GB isn't enough). 320-bit 10GB is an option, but they would be artificially limiting it then - and they can't nerf it because then Vega will beat it.

That's what I think too. It's the 384 bit bus.

1.5 GB VRAM
480, 580

3 GB VRAM
580 (3 GB version), 780, 780 Ti

6 GB VRAM
780 (non Ti 6 GB version), Titan, Titan Black, Titan Z (6 GB for each GPU), 980 Ti

12 GB VRAM
Maxwell Titan X, Pascal Titan X

Each time the Nvidia engineers want to increase the amount of VRAM for a 384 bit bus GPU they double it so the 1080 Ti had to be 6 GB or 12 GB and even though in the past the x80 Ti's had half the VRAM that the Titans did in their generation Nvidia probably feels like customers would balk at an $850 1080 Ti with only 6 GB VRAM so they probably have no choice but to go 12 GB.

Am I respected? :p

Yes.

The 1080 ti would've been released anyway because they need to sell the rest of the garbage Gpus that even can't make it to scrap titan x'es. Sorry but that's the sad truth. If Vega comes and if it's good you at least have the option to support the other smaller company that would sell you full unbroken Gpus though.

There is nothing wrong with a binned GPU. Both AMD and NVIDIA have been doing that for over 15 years.

It amazes me how people will find any way they can to bash nvidia. What happened to the vast majority making at least concise arguments? Must be the election year.....

......So....whats arguably gonna be the 2nd most powerful gpu this generation is garbage? Scrap? Even when i troll i try to keep some reality in there. Nvdia got Amd totally out performed and maneuvered regardless of what they have next. we've been down this road...in fact this is Nascar we know whats coming....left turn! We know how this will play out. Its gonna take something monumental to change this landscape. Till then......left turn.

The GHz Bios was the reason why 79xx performed so well. After the Bios update my old Asus 7950CUII reached 1200Mhz on the core stable @ 1,23Vcore

No even the standard 7970 was usually slightly stronger, and if you overclocked both the 7970 always won handily (And look up today's games were a STANDARD 7970 obliterates the 680). The 7970 GHz was there just so there could be no question of who has the stronger card.

P.S. My 7970 got to 1215/1835! It seriously does bench ahead of a 970, and I really miss having 970 performance in 2012 :(. Still no card like that out there today...

News thread on speculative launch of 1080Ti seems to be heading on a derail route, please keep on topic, if anyone wants to speculate about Vega and make imaginary comparisons or make other AMD/Nvidia comparisons feel free to do so but in another thread, thank you.

In pain of now double posting, as I have just deleted posts that talk about cut down/binned GPU's, 680 performance comparisons etc it seems I really need to spell it out to some, this is a news thread about a speculative launch of the 1080ti, anymore posts that do not relate to that will result in free holidays, a news thread is not an opportunity to enter chatroom mode regarding anything pretty much to do with NVidia/AMD performance comparisons unless directly relating to the 1080Ti.

I would argue they do directly relate. Looking at the launch and evolution of performance of past generations is entirely relevant to how we might estimate the 1080 Ti's performance/launch timing. Furthermore any conversation regarding the 1080 Ti's performance should also include Vega since that is its primary competition.

I have no problems with a discussion relating to the top offerings from NVidia and AMD even though it's purely rumour and speculation because it does directly relate to the topic, I draw lines around 680's and 7970's, architecture, performance and trends are changing and have changed and the point here is simply 3 or 4 people take over the place and talk about this nonsense completely taking over to the point where others struggle to actually talk about the actual news topic, it pushes people away because it becomes tiresome........ as I said, if 2 people want to argue over performance comparisons of 3 gen old cards fine, just not here, that's what the general forums and private messaging are for.

Look at that Captain_Tom, even the mods are sick of you pushing AMD cards all the time.

I have a 1080 and a 4k TV to drive. Depending on the price I would upgrade, but I'll probably just stick with what I have and wait for the 1180 Ti as a worthwhile jump. I sincerely hope Nvidia will come to their senses and launch this card around $750 since, at this point, they're pissing off everyone (including fans) with the stupid founder's edition pricing.

So The GTX 1080 will drop in price when this card come out?

If you consider 50$ a drop. Then yes, in the case of GTX 780 it dropped from 650 to 500$, 1 year later to be replaced by 330$ GTX 970. The real drop in the case of the 500$ GTX 980 occurred when the 250$ GTX 1060 6GB, was introduced 1 year later, even reaching to 980 Ti Ref performance. Ideally 1080 should just re brand as GTX 1170 OC and 12 GBps memory (currently sampling, not in production yet), just like GTX 680/770. So the 384 bit 8 GBps could easily be replaced by 256 bit 12 GBps with the sacrifice of 4GB.

....

Nvidia is so predictable and yet people still struggle with their formula. Release the Titan version first for an inflated price and then release the x80 Ti for what looks like a reasonable price in comparison but really isn't a reasonable price.....

Nvidia would do well to have one high end, one mid range and one budget/server level card. There's still far too many products and the way they launch them is frankly stupid and tiresome.

What they should do is :
  • Premium cards = high end
  • Broken/bad fabrication version of high end = medium range
  • Purposely make a cut down version which is the budget

  1. Sell the premium cards at reasonable prices and they'll fly off the shelves because they're not only in people's budgets, yet consumers also have the confidence that they won't get shafted when Nvidia drop a 'TI' 'X' 'Titan' or <insert name for greed product here>.
  2. Mid range will be very affordable, purchased by casual gamers and often used in 'gaming bundle' pre built systems.
  3. The low end GPUs will be so cheap, they'll take over AMD's market share in the B2B and server sector.
It may take a bit of rearranging, and some overhauls on their end, but they have the money to fund such a restructure.

I always shake my head at people trying to dictate how Nvidia should be running their business, all because the prices are "too high" for them. Thats not Nvidia's problem. Everything Nvidia has done since the 600 series is clearly working in a business stand point.
