AMD Cuts Prices of the Radeon RX 470 and RX 460

no surprise here - AMD did the right thing and saved money for them selves and confusion for customers (instead of gimping rx 470 to another version and selling for same price as this new one)

That's called life. I throw out 300 euros in the last 10 days of August for just a 3 days vacations in a Greek Island, instead of going for an 8GB RX 480. I don't regret it even having to see my HD 7850 struggle with new games. Computer hardware is not everything.

...........who is this mad man?

I am all for fight for this price segment. AMD needs to maintain positive proceeds for a while. I want them to working something for the $250 to $350 price range between the 1060 GB and 1070 GB. There is a massive gap filled with old models that neither side seem to give to snips about. Where is the RX 490, RX 480X, etc.

I don't see why anyone now would pick 1050ti over the rx470. For just 20 bucks more, you get almost 50% more performance. The Rx 470 is currently the best bang for the buck.

This is the second thread you've made this same statement in. I'm wondering where you're getting performance data on an unreleased card at. And I'd also like to know what crazy world you're living on. Even AMD's on PR slides only give the RX470 a 30% lead on the GTX1050Ti. And we can all assume, since they are PR slides from AMD, that number is optimistic at best.

You also need to learn the difference between suggested prices and street prices.

Launch prices for the 470/480s have been a load of crap from the beginning. The 470 starts at $200 at newegg unless u settle for a cut down single fan hsf. Until just this week, the 480 was even worse...but now the egg has an ASUS 480 at $200...or even better the MSI Gaming X for $209 +$20 MIR.

Yep, and even then, that single fan edition is $180 right now. If you drop it $10, that is still $170. All the other RX 470s start at $200, so this price drop might take them down to $190. At those prices, you're knocking at the door of GTX1060 territory(forget 1050Ti). If the 1050Ti launches at the $140 it's expected to, that's a $50 price gap to get a decent RX 470 and $60 to just go with a GTX 1060...

I'd be willing 2 bet that we'll see some smokin' hot deals on the 470/480s for cyber monday and xmas sales. Now that supply has had a chance to catch up, it should be a free for all for the 1050Ti, 1060 3gb, 1060 6gb, 470 4gb, 480 8gb cards all fighting for the same market share...hope not too many fall for an 8gb 470 tho...unless its some crazy low sale price.
Early on I nabbed a 470 Nitro for the wife's rig...hoping she won't fuss to much cuz I'm researchin' premium aftermarket HSF units for my 480.
My usual strategy is the get a decent card from a top tier aib maker with a 2nd rate factory cooler for cheap(er) and put the difference towards a prem. HSF. That seemed to work ok for older gen cards (HD4000, 5000, 6000) but not so much now days...they seem to have gotten a lot more thorough with their binning. If you buy a current gen card with a crappy cooler...odds are the gpu will have crap headroom and/or will be a total turd for OCing. I'm eyeballing Arctic Cooling HSFs atm...always had good luck with them over the years.

Who else should I be checkin' out besides AC? I know water is more affordable than ever...maybe on my next rig.

I don't understand people who say "But uh oh it's 20€ more!". And then they blow 40+ € in a single weekend drinking with buddies. Like wtf dude...

If you're on a budget (and you are, if you're looking at sub-$200 cards), those 20 euros may translate into a better CPU cooler. Just saying...

Sorry, but you'd not decide for a different destination of your choice (which could potentially be so much better) because of 15€ difference? Why don't you just stay at home then? Seriously. I mean, seriously, 15€! I'm far from rich, but I really don't understand you people...
Both destinations where considered equal choices.

As for that small difference

- I'll buy an RX 460 2GB for 100 dollars.
- For 20 you can have the 4GB version. 2GBs are dead.
- Then I'll buy the 4GB version.
- For 20 more you can go to the GTX 1050Ti. Much faster.
- Then I'll buy the 1050 Ti.
- Put another 30 and you are on a completely new level with an RX 470.
- Then I'll go for the RX 470.
- Why go with the cut down version? With 20 more you can have the RX 480.
- Then I'll buy the RX 480.
- You are giving all that money. You should think more future proof. Go for the 8GB version.
- OK, then. I'll buy the RX 480 with 8GBs.
.....

- Excuse me. Forgot to ask. What games do you play?

That's not how paying a bit more to get a lot better thing works. One thing is adding 20 bucks, you've added 150...
You didn't get it. Not by a mile. Let me explain with a question. Which of the above steps is it a mistake? Which is not?
(ignore the football manager stuff in the end, it was more of a little fun than a serious note)

Exactly, I tried to explain this to him before. It is a slippery slop once you start going "well $20 more will get me something better". Of course, he still thinks the 256-bit memory bus alone is a huge improvement and that alone is worth the $20... Of course, it likely won't be just $20 to go from a 1050ti to a 470, and it likely isn't going to be a 50% performance improvement either(AMD claims 30% but only in Vulkan/DX12 games).

I mean, eventually, if you just keep saying "it's only a little more" you end up at a 1060 6GB. After that it is a pretty big jump to something better.

That''s why you set budget for everything.

The price cut isn't in effect for me yet, and I still see 250 CAD for RX 470. If I could score it for below 200CAD, I won't have complains.
Going for 1050ti won't be an upgrade to my current 760 although I'd love to lose the GPU power cable.

760 GTX is currently playing everything I want at a decent framerate, so I don't have the urgency to pull the trigger.

re: 460 4gb, its not even able to use the 4gb so the 2gb version is the only sensible RX 460 choice...and thats based on W1z's own review "The card's limited graphics power (shaders) will ensure you'll never be able to play games that make actual use of more than 2 GB VRAM. If you are in the market for a RX 460, your funds are limited, so make sure not to blow them on 2 GB of extra VRAM that doesn't provide any benefits." https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/RX_460_STRIX_OC/29.html

regarding pricing, i set a limit of how much i could SAVE until i could afford the card i wanted. Setting a limit on pricing is only in ur mind, if u want better perf. sensible ppl would wait and save more money

But we wont see the savings in Australia although closer to china / japan we get screwed over on tech because our markets are not big enough or something...

We didn't see many price cuts mainly because the distributors think we don't know about it, and they're making a huge profit out of that. This happened all the time at least here in Indonesia

Nvidia and AMD battling it out for the Full HD crown in the year of our lord 2016? Wow!

A said state of affairs me thinks. And funny how a 4GB RX 480 is now cheaper/the same price as 8GB RX 470...around 220€ in Germany. Why even bother with either when you can grab a used GTX 970, get better performance and save money?

The complete lack of a 1440p capable card from AMD is the big elephant in the room.

Not if you want silence. But hey, what do I know, you seem to know each and every use case and have already determined that under no circumstances should $20 be directed at anything else, but a slightly faster video card.

If you're on a budget, you can't have it both ways then. Then it's up to you to decide, because clearly best price/performance isn't the factor anymore... It's price/performance/noise. When on budget, you just can't have it all.
