Nope, but making sure with that amount to put the cooler on and apply even pressure and give it a twisting motion to get it to spread evenly, or to use half that amount and spread it all over the processor first, then applying the other half in the center would be best practice.

Best way to do it.

Blob in the middle like the one you've got then spread it with your finger. I did it 2 days ago like that for the first time and it worked a treat. It looked like it had been applied in a factory and i had full control over it.....no more dribbling down the sides for me.

i used to spread it with a card but if you have too much you cant get it back off easily without scraping it off the side.

Have some toilet paper to wipe your finger afterwards because it gets everywhere.

That's how I've been doing it since 1989 :toast:

My general way of doing it is about that much, then spread it evenly with a simple piece of shopping bag plastic stretched over my finger (I don't like to get my fingers dirty, gloves would probably work too. :) )

Alternatively, you may have your arm spasm and destroy your cpu socket like I did earlier this year. I don't recommend this.

First of all, it depends on how thick that paste is, and what kind of heatsink mount you have. Given the way that it is standing up like the curl on a DQ ice cream cone, it looks pretty thick. If the heatsink uses low-pressure mounting like push-pins, then it may not spread enough. If you have a thick paste that won't spread under pressure, the you would need to spread it out beforehand.

Second, if you spread the compound with your finger, you are going to introduce grease and skin cells into the paste, which will actually reduce its efficiency. It is better to use a stiff plastic card or a razor blade, making sure to clean it the same way you would the heatsink or CPU beforehand (grease remover and alcohol like Arctic Silver's cleaner). These are Arctic Silver's words, from their instructions on applying thermal paste.

When applying paste, less is more tbh.

It's just there to smooth out the surface, ideally you want as little of it between the cpu and your cooling block. I'd use less than half of what you've got on there currently. Regardless, if its not oozing around the sides of the cpu, you're fine. The temp difference between a little and a lot is probably less than 3-5 C.

Right I've finished my build:

-----------
-360mm long, (medium thick ) radiator
*pull* on intake from roof

-EK D5 pump/reservoir (combo)

-EK Supremacy Evo CPU block

-1.7m tubing total (used) of 2m, in kit
----------

AMD FX-8350 o/c to 4.8 GHZ (1.487v)

Temps before (Corsair H80i GT - 120mm):
Idle: 30c - 40c
Prime 95: Thermal throttles within 1 minute at 65c

Temps now:
Idle (33c - 45c)

Prime95: Thermal throttles within 1 minute at 65c

65c AMD translates to 85c Intel.

Just spent £300 on this kit (replacing an £80 AIO corsair kit)

Really expected to see at least 10c lower temps.

Used less (about 2/3 quantity of tim compared to the picture at the top of this thread).

Anything else I can be doing wrong?

EK block was correctly assembled using AMD inserts.

It all depends on the heatsink used. My hyper 212 plus did best with the paste applied to the heatsink itself, roughly the size of the cpu and filling the "canals" between the copper pipes.
Strangely though, my hyper 212 evo (heatpipes are much closer to eachother without canals) does better with the paste first on the cpu. Applied evenly with a plastic stick, then a very tiny dot in the center.

So Always make sure to have two tubes of paste, and start experimenting with your heatsink combo.
Also, when you used too much, it will drip over the side of the cpu. By experimenting with different applying types you will notice this quicly, so you can clean off the sides of the cpu if needed.

Anyway, use programs to check your temps and compare.

depending on die size, I will either draw a small line then use an old debit card to spread evenly. Always seemed to work for me.

Nick
Sounds about right to me I could see mine doing similar in prime, hence prime means naught to me , I can game at different clocks to what I can crunch, if I were you I'd worry about in use temps but not prime it uses too much of a processor and nothing bar crunching will use similar performance making it passe I have enjoyed years of gaming with mine clocked at 4.8 but it would not be here today if I'd crunched at that , I folded mostly and have started crunching recently (4.5@)because this CPU is nearly EOL in main use terms for me all temps at 52 ish + - 5.
I have crunched and folded at 4.8 with this system as is but I had 62 degrees soaked heat + - 5 and a room so warm I felt sick so I calmed it a bit.

Ignoring the fact that pic shows toothpaste, the amount difference is huge

I'd apply a pea sized amount of thermal paste.

its not bigger than a pea nor smaller than a grain of rice, so yea not a miniscule amount or a shit load on there would be what I would take away from it but hey, thanks for the visualisation ;)
