flashing an xfx r9 290 with an r9 290x bios issues

There's no guarantee the 290x flash would work, and even if it did you'd easily overclock a 290 to outperform a 290x.

Edit: I hope you're trying to flash a ref card with a ref bios, or atleast the same model custom card with 290 and 290x being the only difference

If the CU's good he can overclock and have an overclocked 290X.

pretty sure thats exactly what im trying to do , like i said earlier i may just get another card for cross fire

i like my DD's in pairs

its not even my final form!!

Sorry above does not make sense to me.

even if it didnt have a second bios , i have a few extra cards that i could use to flash the bios back . ive even been plugging in my old 6850 to try to flash the 290 bios in windows. i already had good luck with the 6950-6970 unlock on the other cards.... i basically started with an asus 290x bios , and when that didnt work i started going down the list of xfx 290x bios on the gpu database on this site...still havent had any luck..but i havent made it all the way down the list . i found another xfx 290x for $100 and might jump on that and see if that can sort anything out

Great you have spare cards :) . I would not flash other cards ROMs to your card, as the ROM contains information relating to VRM, etc which may differ from your cards design. If in your shoes I'd be flashing the XFX 290X DD ROMs, as the PCB would be the same. Now viewing the EKWB site you will notice they have stated "AMD reference PCB design checked by EK", the XFX PCB will not have the AMD stamp by PCI-E fingers but is pretty much identical. So I would be inclined to use The Stilt's MLU builds.

I like pairs of DD as well . Who'd want just one o_O ? :p .

Try different bios with lower gpu/mem frequency, start by trying the old stock 290x bios from different brand, beeing sure that u alway use the ref card bios, if u have a ref pcb.

U can try the modded PT1 bios, the problem when u flash a 290 to 290x is that the system read the mismatch between the bios and the pcb/id card, so u get stuck to blank screen.

The modded PT1 bios solve this issue, if it work u solved your problem, after that u can find or modify your brand 290x bios to match the card id with the bios file.

so heres a small victory , maybe .

i bought an xfx 290x off Craigslist (for $70!!) , installed it and after a few screen flashes and a restart . the 290 is recognized as a 290x , 1000mhz stock on the gpu clock and 2816 shaders enabled...wish i had more answers for this..
but i hope my dumb luck doesnt run out anytime soon

thank you every one for the suggestions and help , more suggestions and questions are always welcome

sorry for a double post , got some interesting numbers in heaven
