DICE cooling

Hi,

I've decided to 'get into' cooling with DRY ICE next week, after I get paid.

I plan to begin with GPU (my 1080).

I've had a look online at Kingpincooling.com and EK under the extreme sections (and also done some google searches) but the "pots" all seem hideously expensive!

Anyone know any good websites where I can grab one of these at a bargain price? Even an Ebay search turned up zero results for the U.K!

Also; from anyone here with more experience.. how do you cool GPU memory and GPU VRM while using DRY ICE?

P.S. I had a look at LN2 but it doesn't seem very easy to get ahold of. (I did email a company near London however they only deliver within a 50 mile radios of their head office) so it looks like DRY ICE will have to suffice just now.

Thanks.

I thought this was going to be some Kinda battlefield related cooling system "Dice" cooling..... either that or very and enthusiast grade craps

What's the point of running your 1080 under dice and spending all of this money on a rig that benchmarks worse than an i3?

Because I'm not touching a new CPU until after ZEN has released.

I can play about on my old CPU now (with reduced risk). That experience I can then take across when I grab a new ZEN CPU.

Also; If I buy a GPU pot now, I'll still be able to use it on my GPU after ZEN launches.

I believe the AMD overclocking scene is also still active on HWBOT, I created my new account over there last week. Not had a chance to use it yet. :)

You aren't going to set any records with dice. Those chips are on LN2.

I'm not looking to set any records, yet.

Also, the pots are optimised for both.

I can grab a delivery of Dry Ice for £27 ($33) to gain some experience.

Anyway looking to pick up a decent pot.

If no one knows anywhere that does these at a bargain price, I think I'll probably just pick up a brand new one up from Kingpincooling.com next week.

??

Aye, precisely

Its more curiosity i think.

I like to see how far I can go with it. Push it to its limits. Try things ive never tried bedore.

Its keeping me busy especially weekday evenings.

At least I'm doing something. A lot of ppl do nothing. Or are happy to vegetate in front of a TV. Lol.

A question for the experienced benchers amongst us:

How do you effectively & safely cool the GPU's VRM (voltage regulators (drivers/mosfets etc) while doing a DRY ICE session? (I've marked the hottest parts of mine in blue)

I can't imagine RAM sinks would be very effective, especially since I'll be needing to use a thermal pad due to all the exposed solder points/metal around my GPU's VRM....? or am I wrong?

Can you cut off the VRM cooling section from the stock cooler?

no :-( if it was an older card, I would feel differently about that...

but not my 1080...

The card has actually been very well looked after and very 'lightly' used. I've overclocked at high frequencies, (a bit), but only ever run a few, short benchmarks.

Hardly gamed on it at all, so it hasn't even seen prolonged high temperatures nor prolonged high loads.

It's spent most of its life at idle. And even when it has been overclocked, its been at nice, low water-cooled temps. I even monitor VRM temps with probes and I would actually wage a bet that it probably has the lowest VRM temps of any classified 1080 out there (due to the extra thermal pads I added and the time I spent perfecting their heights/performance).

I really am not ready to start cutting up bits of EVGA Classy baseplate and heatsink, I may want to sell the card some day :)

Get a spare stock cooler then. One from a 980 classified will work aswell.

Just trim these parts so the pot will mount with the under plate attached.

Okay thanks for the idea; I will get in contact with EVGA and see if they could sell me with a replacement base-plate (at my own expense).

Also anyone from the U.K had any luck with LN2 sourcing?

I got some promising replies from 2 companies that were happy to supply, but due to driving distance (300 miles) and transportation restrictions the price would of been exorbitant.

Not found any companies near Edinburgh that are willing to do mini-bulk supply.

DRY ice is cheaper in the short-term. But in the long-term LN2 is cheaper if you're able to source it. (so I have learned, in other words-- if you buy your own dewer, its relatively cheap to have it refilled if you live close enough to a supplier).

I get an error message saying I don't have permission to enter.

My account is very new, only got into this scene quite recently and not actually submitted any entries yet.

Still at the cost calculating and planning stage. (and the research/inspiration/you-tube stage) you get the picture ;-)
