We did... ours is published, so is Anand's.................... and many others.. at 9AM EST....go figure.

Now, no need for a leak thread. Hopefully someone posted an official thread with links in the first post and this misinformed one on launch time can be closed, LOL!

So am I correct in saying that you need a 1440p screen or higher to get the best out of a Ryzen processor in gaming? As that seems to be the case from what I've seen so far.

I wouldn't imagine so...? No idea. We didn't test up there as that is, in general a GPU limited resolution. CPU can certainly help, but, not as much as 1080p and below.

Well, the benchmarks I've seen so far seem to suggest that it's a good gaming CPU at 1440p, but not so great at 1080p.

Question is - is it good for 4K gaming too?

Very disappointing 1080p Gaming performance: "On the three game titles we tested with, the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X showed somewhat disappointing results."

Very few gaming benchmarks so far, but it seems to be close to or on par with Intel at 1440p and 4k, while being only ho hum at 1080p.

makes sense considering what I said, no?

Well, yes and no, as AMD jumps from being behind to being up top, so sure, the GPU limitation plays in, but apparently Intel has some CPU limitation beyond 1080p as well, or so it seems.

https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_ryzen_7_1800x_processor_review,16.html and the next few pages

http://hothardware.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-7-1800x-1700x-1700-benchmarks-and-review?page=8

http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Ryzen-7-1800X-CPU-265804/Tests/Test-Review-1222033/ Gaming - Resolution scaling, first drop down, add higher resolutions

It seems to go from a gap of 10-30fps to no gap or 1-2 fps at the most. Sure, some of that would because it's GPU bound, but for example AC:Syndicate on PCGamesHardware AMD almost catches up at 1440p with a difference of less than 6fps, whereas at 720p the difference is almost 50fps and at 1080p it's over 30fps.

AMD seems to be dropping little to no performance as the resolution goes up, at least to 1440p, whereas Intel drops a lot of performance going up in resolution. This obviously varies by game though.
Not enough data points to say this is across the board, but it looks like there's something going on.

Hexus, Guru 3D, Ars Technica all point to a poor 1080p gaming experience for Ryzen 1800x. At 1440p it is fine.

AMD have already made a statement that addresses the issue that all games so far are pretty much optimised for Intel CPU's - which is completely believable if you ask me. So, given that I game at 1440p and wont ever be back at 1080p I think it makes sense for me to give AMD some money for making a difference once more.

That trend doesn't make much sense to me... honestly... In looking at our review, I see there is a difference of 1-2 FPS at 1080p, and 1-3 FPS at 1440p...

On Ultra, yes. If you put forward a real CPU gaming test like they did at Hardwareinfo.nl you will see significant gaps at 1080p @ medium. Especially at high FPS - up until 60 fps there is hardly a difference, go above, and it starts to show. The overclocking also leaves much to be desired, capping at 4.1 Ghz all over the place, so that won't save its gaming performance either.

https://nl.hardware.info/reviews/72...ncurrentie-voor-intel-gametest-gtx-1080-gta-v

Min FPS also suffers on 1080p ultra btw, with gaps of 10-15% observed, ie 45 versus 52 fps on the 7700k is not uncommon.

It's all about clocks really, IPC is comparable across the board.

From what I've seen up till now, I'm gonna be waiting to see how the Ryzen 5 pans out. AMD had better work on those clocks for that part, or its gonna lose its target market. So far it seems Ryzen really doesn't like manual OC'ing.

You're looking at it backwards. Intel's CPUs are able to push the FPS higher (utilizing more GPU resources) in lower resolutions while AMD's CPU simply cannot. Intel is gaining so much more as you lower the resolution, not losing more as you go up, when you go up in resolution the bottleneck starts to move to the GPU which, at 1440P, seems to be all GPU bound and making AMD a perfectly viable option again.

AMD have already made a statement that addresses the issue that all games so far are pretty much optimised for Intel CPU's - which is completely believable if you ask me. This makes a lot of sense. Why would developers make games using AMD's CPUs for the last 5-6 years? I know I wouldn't optimize much for them if at all..

the54thvoid, do you have a link to the statement? I would love to see it. Twitter?

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3176191/computers/ryzen-review-amd-is-back.html?page=3

“As we presented at Ryzen Tech Day, we are supporting 300+ developer kits with game development studios to optimize current and future game releases for the all-new Ryzen CPU. We are on track for 1,000+ developer systems in 2017. For example, Bethesda at GDC yesterday announced its strategic relationship with AMD to optimize for Ryzen CPUs, primarily through Vulkan low-level API optimizations, for a new generation of games, DLC and VR experiences,” Taylor said. “Oxide Games also provided a public statement today on the significant performance uplift observed when optimizing for the 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen 7 CPU design—optimizations not yet reflected in Ashes of the Singularity benchmarking. Creative Assembly, developers of the Total War series, made a similar statement today related to upcoming Ryzen optimizations.

CPU benchmarking deficits to the competition in certain games at 1080p resolution can be attributed to the development and optimization of the game uniquely to Intel platforms—until now. Even without optimizations in place, Ryzen delivers high, smooth frame rates on all ‘CPU-bound’ games, as well as overall smooth frame rates and great experiences in GPU-bound gaming and VR. With developers taking advantage of Ryzen architecture and the extra cores and threads, we expect benchmarks to only get better, and enable Ryzen to excel at next-generation gaming experiences as well. Game performance will be optimized for Ryzen and continue to improve from at-launch frame rate scores.”

I bolded that section for @EarthDog - even AMD see an issue at 1080p

Thanks gents, that makes sense... specifically looking at it backwards...

Im so tired (sick, little sleep for 2 days) and have a HUGE job interview today (shortly) with Amazon Web Services... so nervous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I havent even read any other reviews yet outside of our own, lol!
