AMD Vega Discussion Thread

Some of you forget that ALWAYS there are 2 iterations for each chip. So, Vega 10=2 products, Vega 11=another 2 products. At least. Too difficult to predict where each of those 4 will land on performance and price without hard numbers to base that predictions.

Well just a reminder the Vega 11 GDDR5 rumors were pointed to be the 500 series a complete top-down stack of Vega. That rumor was bogus.

Which if you recall that (Vega GDDR5) rumor was started by a quote addressing segment memory and cost not Vega.

RX Vega 10 has enough hardware to match Titan Xp but it lacks the software optimizations to do so. At launch, expect ~GTX 1080 performance and therefore, GTX 1080 price (~$500 USD). Vega 11 will likely be have a top model at ~$400 USD. We'll probably see a RX Vega Duo at some point going for $1200~$1500 USD.

I seriously wonder whether @W1zzard knows a lot more than any of us:
I don't. Cooperation with AMD has really been sluggish, chaotic and unorganized, didn't get any RX 500 samples, I had to organize my own. Going by that we might not even get a Vega review sample.

Well that sucks! I hope AMD isn't still upset because they think this site's reviews are unfair to AMD.

I'm talking people on YouTube and Twitch with a lot of viewers that are constantly gushing (aka raving mad) about AMD products. AMD isn't interested in giving review samples to benchmarkers that quantifiably compare AMD's products to their competitors.

I think the AMD reviews atm are fair and square but in the past weren't. One of my first posts here was me complaining about it

Yep. Just what I figured. AMD's tech support does not exist. Spent 2 months trying to get a hold of someone to solve a LiquidVR implementation error and never received one bit of help.

Not to argue, but just saying what's wrong with that?

Tbh I'd rather watch jaystwocents and be entertained by watching an un biased review on either teams card.

Plus A sense of humor and zero negativity go a long way in my book then a review that just is the same old same ol.

Besides its not like this site can't afford to buy a card for review. I do agree though wiz should get a sample no matter what but I'm sure there's a reason behind everything.

Speaking of streaming what ever happened to the TPU YT channel?

You're 100% right there man. I used to be able to get promotional items/ components through several contacts I had with differing manufacturers(not AMD). Slowly over the past seven or so years those contacts either dried up, or stopped sending anything out unless you have 1 million + viewers on YouTube(and dont mind returning the favor with a reach around). Most recently i was told exactly "sadly we only send out early release items to youtube channel owners". :shadedshu: From Azio support regarding keyboard & mouse engineering samples. I understand the reason, but I suppose im immature, since it leaves me feeling "alienated" in some way

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
The problem is visibilty... or lack thereof. They can ask input without having to get rid of a sample which doesnt give the product exposure.

Im floored TPU didnt get a 580 or fury samples. Hell, they flew me out to LA for the fury release and we didnt even get sampled... we are way smaller than tpu, but, why send us out there and then not give a sample??? Getting anything from AMD is getting difficult... i dont like conspiracy theories, but, it feels to me like they are cherry picking reviewers... and again, no idea why tpu would be out as they have ALWAYS been fair and not biased.

See that is the problem. As a tech company trying to push out something, they don't technically want the most fair and unbiased opinion. Sometimes they prefer a quicker sell, like linustechtips and a whole gazillion other youtube hardware "reviewers."

I remember W1zzard said in one of his review thread, getting any response from AMD is difficult these days.

As for me I have pretty much given up of utilizing the FuryX for OpenCL/VR building. AMD is probably expecting everyone who wanna use their GPU for computation to have background in low level programming. While at the same time, Nvidia offered great support for both their CUDA as well as their new initiative VRWorks. All of my inquires to Nvidia's tech support got taken care of nicely and I don't even own any Nvidia GPU yet. That shows the difference in terms of software support.

On a different note, many researchers have been attempting to harness the great computation power of consumer grade GPU for scientific research. Here is one research paper on utilizing FuryX and TitanX for OpenCL/Jana

http://uni-obuda.hu/journal/Aciu_Ciocarlie_67.pdf

Edit:

Can you get VEGA sample? That is the question. I saw you had no problem obtaining a wide variety of RyZen platforms.

This was one of the most strange Benchmark I have seen for the older gen GPUs

By "fair" he means "on AMD's side." TPU's interests (unbiased review) and AMD's interests (generate hype to sell products), in that regard, are not aligned.
