Intel mainstream CPUs have had a bottleneck in cooling due to poor heat transfer from the CPU die to the integrated heat spreader. Thanks to new de-lidding friendly tools released recently, it is now easier than ever before to handle this yourself and get a cooler running CPU. We examine two such solutions from Rockit Cool and Aqua Computer today, both of which promise fool-proof de-lidding and re-lidding.

Nice review, but I cant help thinking that this should not be needed on such a cpu. More than 20 degrees improvement should make Intel reconsider their thermal solution. Considering that buyers lose there guarantee by doing this.

These tools greatly facilitate the removal of the thermal pressure distributor or cover the processor but it would be good if it could be used for more than one processor.
Already years ago since I removed the cover from i73770K and gained huge thermal deficits. A caution in use! It can lead to twisting, under a strong spring. !! I suggest the use of spacers !! to the right height !! It is try myself, because the springs on the CPU block are to strong and bend s !! beds and pins so that the processor has lost contacts.

my old 3770k had an even larger drop than the 20C you saw, but thats possibly because i was at my thermal limits (seeing 90-95C in IBT, and i used liquid metal TIM under the IHS)

The Delid Die Mate 2 was one I tried to get a sample of to include in here as well, but unfortunately they had supply issues then. With just a quick look online it seems fairly easy to use as well, but I can't say I would recommend it or something else over it without personal experience. All I can say is that the Rockit tool is going to do the job easily.

Funny how you should mention overclocking, isn't that what the little "k" is meant for?
The least Intel could have done is ensure their 'k' series CPU's had better thermal solutions between the IHS than their non-overclocking CPU's.

I've had two 3770Ks, the first an average overclocker probably positioned right at the 50th percentile, attempted a delidding myself and cut down into the PCB slicing the dual memory tracers, same day I decided to bend a few pins on the Z77 motherboard just for kicks, most likely a Darwin moment. Second "replacement" 3770K was an amazing clocker, got lucky in the Amazon lottery, stable at 5.0, bootable to 5.3, still have that awesome CPU mounted on the wall with the ROG Maximus V Extreme mobo.

Paid for a 6700K delidding by the Siliconlottery.com guy, he's awesome, the CPU is binned to 4.8 and brilliant thermals using an EK monoblock.


But here we are in 2017, and I would avoid this issue altogether if you are able. Buy Ryzen Performance Series or the Intel X299 HEDT Series in June or Ryzen's upcoming X399 HEDT series using proper solder as your thermal interface.

Nice idea with the cyanoacrylate VSG.

I would have to agree, and thought VSG being a fan guy and guru, would find this humorous.

My 6500 5Ghz see only 15C drop with liquid pro under IHS. But further improved by another liquid pro on IHS. Temp drop by 6C compare to MX-4 on IHS.

Sometime's he runs a delidding sale, got my 6700K delidded for $29.99.

But back then, January 2016, we did not have these amazing DIY delidding tools/options presented in this review.

Also, Performance PCs has a Kaby Lake and a SkyLake delidding tool you can rent for only $14.95 for 10days. Not certain if that is the Der8auer tool or not, but it sure looks familiar.

It's not. It's a PPCs exclusive of sorts manufactured by Hardware Labs for them.

To be fair to Intel, they do. Devil's Canyon was the acknowledgement of this very thing. Doesn't mean they did everything possible though.
