Sorry Caps if this has been covered, but I haven't read the whole thread. Is it just one port that's causing this problem? Does the port look normal with that tester gadget that you've got?

i think we've narrowed it down to a data issue. All the ports tested fine voltage wise and work with all his other peripherals. There are 6 other USB ports he can use, 4 on a pci-e card and 2 on the case.

Then maybe a data line is going out of spec and feeding too much voltage with no actual data. If only you had an oscilloscope handy that would prove it one way or the other. If you can get a multimeter on there it might be enough to prove it.

Luke tried with a multi meter but was concerned he might short the board so we gave up. The tester thing seems to be pretty accurate as i tried it in all my pcs and they all showed slightly different voltages, though they were consistent with each board, all the ports on my sons pc were 5.02 v

Do the other peripherals actually function normally then?

yes.

As soon as you plug a mouse into one of the motherboard ports the mouse is dead. LEDs glow underneath but no pointer and nothing in Device Manager.
