If you remove the limits with XTU you can get it to peg at 100C and pull 40W from the wall.

It's laptop hardware for a TV basically.

It also works well as a system for business. Where its performance is solid along with the BIOS offering Intel vpro and AMT features that IT departments find useful.

I actually set this system up for an older relative to use. Upgraded it to 8 GB of memory hooked it to there TV.

They use it for doing accounting for the family business, And as an access point for using LogMeIn to check other systems at the business location from home. Sure they could use a laptop for that But most laptops in that price range are generally similar but slower and do not feature SSD storage. So for the price its more business oriented rather than consumer focused. ECS didn't really target these at the right market.

That said I still use the LIVA Z (non plus) as an HTPC / Steam streaming box for the living room.

I hear you. I feel these things would be amazing if they could be had for $300-400 (preferably with a Windows license included).
As it is, a tinkerer will just go with a RPi (or something like that) and a casual user is better of with an entry to mid level laptop.
Still, it's nice to see more and more power fitting into that little box.

I have this on my TV personally. I have hooked to it a Logitech k400, USB DVD drive, USB speakers (simple audio listen) and extension with a wired mouse for the sofa so I can play games (casual games, like starcraft tower defenses lol)

So you paid like $700-800 to play Starcraft and tower defence? I expect many people won't call that a good deal.

Realistically, Wireless kb+m $30 wireless DVD drive if needed $15 speakers if using a TV are well not necessary. Even with USB speakers maybe $15 so $489 + $60 so $550.

Laptops tend to have issues over time. See it alot screen hinges give out, plastic casing lets go. Trackpad goes to hell. One of these at least you dont need to worry about that less points of failure. Like i said though they directed these at consumers as HTPCs in reality with the intel vPRO and AMT support, dual nic etc its makes more sense from an IT / business perspective.

Your specs also say you have 2x4GB RAM sticks, so it's a more expensive box than the one reviewed here. They're not bad, just a little pricey compared to what a DIY build can achieve.

I upgraded to Kingston impact 2*4 2400/14. My sample had the same transcend memory 4gb stick.

You also can't do this form factor with DIY.

It is largely the i5 that makes it that price. I'm pretty sure I've seen cheaper models with i3s and maybe even Pentiums.

Indeed The LIVA-Z plus does have other models For even cheaper options ie sub $300 they have the standard LIVA-Z

i5 7300U
i5 7200U
i3 7100U
Celeron 3965U

The 7300U seems to be the most prominent and easily obtainable variant
