If this is true, than intel is really idiotic.
4c/8t CPU would go in a lineup like this:

i3 - 4c/8t
i5 - 6c/12t
i7 - 8c/16t

That would be the most logical path.

In addition to lack of turbo, I'd bet the main difference will be a MUCH smaller cache.

Many misconceptions in this thread.

A 6c/6t CPU WILL outperform a 4c/8t at the same clock , there is no question about it.

The performance gains from SMT diminishes with higher core count , more physical threads are NOT a substitute for execution resources. The biggest gap from HT on and off comes at low core counts. This is why simple dual cores are essentially useless nowadays while i3s fair much better. These new i5s will probably outperform even a 5Ghz 7700K in multi-threading.

On the matter of these supposedly new i3s , I am doubtful. Intel has been very resentful from offering higher core counts. However it wouldn't entirely surprise me , their platforms keep getting more and more convoluted with each passing day.

What seems plausible is that there will be say a 8100 which is a simple quad core at the typical price and this 8300 with 8 threads is going to come at some ridiculous price close to the lowest end i5 just like the 7350K was.

So Intel's naming scheme is meaningless now because you can't assume any feature is available or not based on it. So what is even the point of continuing the i3, i5, i-whatever the f#$*?

This is no Surprise at all.

When Core I5/I7 are 6 cores now, when you allready knew Core I3 would be 4 cores :)

Intel could have done this ages ago, but had no reason.

i3's were great all around CPUs up until the G4560. They are still good all arounders, even for gaming, but their price, and Intels lineup, is bonkers.

Wouldn't the i3s just be a spec response to Ryzen 3 series? 4 cores, no HT, no boost, and probably some random VT stuff disabled.

I would be very confused if they offered something like this. Unless they are planning on reworking the entire lineup and now the i5's will also be that way on coffee lake?

The 2c/4t setup was already extremely powerful and underestimated, a 4.0 4c/8t in the $150 price range is ludicrous!

In most productivity benchmarks I have seen, the 7700k was 50% faster or so than the 7600k. The 8600k should be 50% faster than the 7600k as well.

Except for a very few instances, Hyperthreading doesn't even come close to a 50% improvement.

The real question is how much power is this CPU going to use? If it's going to be a 65w TDP part, then it's just a promotion for the i3. If it's more like 45w TDP, it could prove to be an interesting CPU.

So according to intel's logic new i3 should also be usd 310 ish ?

I don't think so, the HEDT platform saw some massive price cuts compared to previous ones, and also a reduction in IPC and efficiency. This new i3 could have a 150-180 price.

To me it still could be a quad-thread per core idea :slap:

G4560 proves that new setup it's possible
With the same price as the old one at 1st released
G4400 (2C 2T) > G4560 (2C 4T)
G4400 +- $7x 1st released
G4560 +- $7x 1st released (G4400 and Ci3 Killer)

thats why intel stopped the G4560 for a while
to clear all off old stock before the new one is coming

because if this new type has entered the market with the same pricing scheme,
Who wants to buy the old type???

Actually intel can do this on their previous product, but they not create it because there is no reason to make it..
So they put a lot of cores only on Xeon at that time
but game is change, so big thanks to red team

When I was forced to buy Intel for work, it was never anything less than an i5.

Work? Xeons are typically preferred choice for that. But intel did a bit annoying decision to force using xeon chipset for those when skylake arrived.

There's work and there's work. Why would desk jockeys need Xeons?

Well 2c/4t is still enough for plenty. If you didn't pay for it, sure why not, but i3s most definitely had their place in the world. They still do, but again, the G4560 made them moot.

Unless you want to emulate the PS3, then the Pentium runs equal to an A8, or worse, it runs slower than my 2GHz 5005U. All thanks to removing AVX just because.

I spent the last 6 years as a senior engineer for a managed services provider. When I ordered PCs for a client , my min spec for desktops was an i5 and 8gb(2x4gb) of ram. A few clients had custom built point of sale systems and those I replaced with i3s . All servers were of course xeons but the servers were esxi hosts.
