Only thing bothering me is the brightness of the cursor. Look how dim it is on 480Hz screen. That can't be good.

That's just a camera shutter effect.

IMHO part of the problem is that we still have FPS. LCD panels don't need a fixed refresh frequency, they can be updated as little or as often as you wish (as long as it isn't too fast). Screen tearing should never have been a problem on LCDs because a Gsync or Freesync like mechanism should have been present in modern interface standards to begin with. HDMI still has blanking intervals built in!

Ideal would be scan free pixel streaming, so that each pixel changes individually and not in full screen scan intervals. If pixel changes, update that pixel on screen, leave the rest as is. I thought it worked this way when first LCD's arrived till i realized that's not the case.

You're getting close to video compression techniques there :).

LOL, please tell me this was a sarcasm, please

It wasn´t sarcasm at all. Who cares about refresh rates after 240hz? We need Oled and HDR on pc monitors, we are lagging behind the TV market for sure, when it was the oposite before.

When I go to any friend´s house and watch them playing on their crappy console, they are using oled screens and HDR on many games while we have so much horsepower and still on ips and tn panels at SDR lul

yeah I know ME Andromeda supports HDR, dont care about that game anyways.

Why so negative? If it can do 144Hz at 2160p and 480Hz at 1080p, maybe it can do something in between at 1440p. The monitor that can run different games with different resolutions at high refresh rate, add some fancy VRR tech(or if not possible, fast sync/enhaced sync) that would be some ultimate gaming monitor right there.
Running any game except on native res, it's just going to make the game a blurry washedout fest. No thanks. :D

The pixel blur on refresh rates higher than 144 gets bonkers, that and there are literally no games that would support this high of a framerate, many won't either reach it or they have a hard cap within the engine.

No, I don´t agree. 240hz is good and is a noticeable improvement over 144hz, even 200hz. From that point is when I stoped noticing differences (I can spot differences even from 100hz to 120hz). 480hz is just unecessary, as I said, would rather get Oled monitors as a standard, asap.

I feel like in 2017 people on PC still care too much about 1990s and 2000s stuff, shooters at 300fps with outdated engines and game mechanics. Look at the sucess Pubg is having right now. WE need something like Crysis was, push the boundaries ffs!!!!

But yeah, when minecraft and cs are 2 of the most played games... nuff said.

Is this connected through DP 1.4? What is holding them back from releasing more monitors with that connection? Currently I only know of 3 monitors that support DP 1.4 and they still only go up to 60Hz @ 4K. So this prototype could be the first monitor that actually takes advantage of DP 1.4 with 120Hz @ 4K.

Why would people suddenly dislike some of the best games of all time?

Back on topic: This recent pissing contest with refresh rates is a good thing. It's not like panel manufacturers have bothered doing much to improve anything else when a true 8bit panel is still considered noteworthy in 2017 :|.

Because those games use old outdated mechanics, there is no inovation apart from Indie games right now. The market gives you what the customers want. Companies develop the products that sell well, that´s why you don´t see oled HDR 144hz monitors for PC and you still get crappy TN/IPS models with SDR and glow all over the place

utterly pointless as long as people desire more pretties at higher resolutions..

I know people say they want more, but they aren't getting it lol. Medium looks close to Ultra in most games, and High settings are near indistinguishable from Ultra.

NOT, if you are talking about Textures. In any game, on a high resolution display, anything except Ultra or Very High is crap quality.

Hi Res textures often matter, but there is no performance hit from turning them up either.

Anyone ever stopped you from using OLED TV ? I am using Panasonic 42" LED TV as my monitor @ 120HZ. Esport is actually big deal even at state level in lot of countries. If you are good, there is a real chance of earning money, and i can see this tech being a good choice for such players ? Even i am into Dota so i would love such tech to only go forward.

I think panel self refresh partially does this though mainly to reduce power consumption and it only seems to be used in notebooks. Pixel values drift and do need to be refreshed from the panel electronics since they aren't stable but the panel technically doesn't need the entire frame retransmitted over and over from the GPU when nothing changes between frames (and yes it's still frame paced). I think only eInk achieves what you're thinking.

I don't think that's the case. Even E-Ink does a full screen scan and it'll first flip all pixels and then flag those needed as visible. At least my Seiko E-Ink watch does this. And I think I've seen the same on Kindles...

Probably in its current state due to the way it's addressed, and to reduce power consumption on the controller, but it is at least possible since it's pixel value is persistent. LCDs can't hold their polarization without power so at some layer, something's constantly refreshing the value on unchanged pixels.

What is most ridiculous is some ppl say that blur reduction is redundant since blurry vision is natural and it's how we see the world when we move. What ? If my vision had the same sort of blur that I can see when moving the camera at 60Hz my day would be nothing but walking around and throwing up.
The joke is on you my friend. The blurry vision IS natural.
The simplest example is, take a laser pen, and start shacking your hand, first slow, and then as fast as you can until the point becomes a continuous arc/line/whatever. By seeing that arc, means that your eye/brain processing already reached it's limits of images/second, so it's just starting to interpolating the images creating a continuous image in your brain. Pretty much how motion blur works ;)
P.S.
Quick question for your brain homework:
Approximately how many times/second did you shake your hand before the laser dot turned into a continuous arc? ;) ;)

I think I came a bit. The 144Hz is already sublime and using it at 60Hz is literally a painful experience (could be just because it's made for 144Hz and works bad at 60Hz). Only thing bothering me is the brightness of the cursor. Look how dim it is on 480Hz screen. That can't be good.

I'm glad I haven't had the privilege...yet. I don't know what I'm missing. I have a decent display, but I actually like gaming on TV for some things (so... it's crappy 60hz...or some kind of fake 120 TV Hz setting).

That proves nothing since I'm not debating that you can make it blurry by shaking your head fast and looking at some specific detail, that's not what I was talking about at all if you read my post. My point was there's no blurry vision when you look around unless there's something wrong with your eyes. In a movie I watched they burned a dog,yet you wouldn't describe dogs as naturally flammable, although they do have fur which should light up pretty easily. Same way an optician would say that if your vision is blurred, it'd mean your eyes need help.

Blured vision and motion blured vision are two completelly different things completelly unrelated. I was talking about the 2nd one.

I´m a 144hz fan and right now can´t use anything else on my monitors, as long as I am 50cm to 1 meter distance from them and using a mouse. HOWEVER, when I play games on a TV (or big screen) at some distance and with a controller, 144hz or 60hz is the same to me. Done all those tests and that´s what I found. 144hz is good because of the connection feel with the mouse and because on PC we are really close to the screens.

Been playing Wither 3 on PC with a controller and on the couch and ended up locking the game to 60hz to save GPU load and noise. And it works to me.

Ah good point. Yeah, I'm about 10 feet away from the TV.

Well, I have plenty of games I plan on using for the monitor (mostly iso RPGs which suck on a TV). I'll adjust things more when I get around to them.
