Microsoft made considerable noise on their vaulted Game Mode, a Windows feature which made its appearance in their latest Creators Update version of Windows 10. Game Mode was one of the foremost features in the latest Windows update, which was supposed to deliver improved performance in gaming or other full-screen 3D applications, by enabling more of the available CPU and GPU resources to be tapped into by specific applications. Specific CPU (through winding down of non-crucial processes) and GPU (through prioritization of game-related graphics memory allocation) improvements were baked into this latest version; supposedly, only performance improvements should result from this effort on Microsoft's part.

However, things are not as rosy as they should be, and users soon started reporting performance issues with stuttering and lower than expected frame-rates under the latest version of Windows - which didn't occur prior to the Creators Update. Microsoft has been mum on the issue; until now. The company has now officially acknowledged that there are indeed situations where gamers could experience frame-rate and stuttering issues, and has even issued a fix for one such situation with the latest, fast-ring build 16273 and above versions of Windows. However, this has fixed only one of multiple origin points for the reported issues.

Some users are reporting that disabling the Xbox Game DVR feature eliminates the issues, but this isn't working for every user that remains affected. Likely, the issue lies with Microsoft's Game Mode interface and Xbox interface additions to Windows 10 with the Creators Update. It's somewhat of a paradox: at the same time that Microsoft introduces specific CPU and GPU workload optimizations for full-screen applications, they introduce an additional interface layer on top of your 3D application, enabling additional Xbox-based functionality (such as the aforementioned DVR capability). Likely, that's the culprit of the whole performance issues; it remains to be seen whether all sources of the performance issues will be fixed through windows updates, or if users will have to wait until the Fall Creators Update for a fully resolved scenario.

its just another gimmick by m$ meant to track you. No surprise m$ dropped the ball here. I mean its not like that actually thoroughly test everything they put out, if they did there would a lot less complaints and bashing. :shadedshu::nutkick:

Well, at least they found it and acknowledged it. Yeah, it was stupid for them to take this long to acknowledge it but better late than never.

I honestly keep debating if Win10 is worth the tracking and bullshit, Win 7 has more user flexibility, WMC which works reliably, and the same performance without the BS apps forced on you unless you want to break other things.

This could explain why I'm not all that amazed by the GTX 1080Ti performance. It just doesn't feel good. And quite frankly it didn't on GTX 980 either. Just didn't pay attention that it might be Windows at fault...

And to get "fixes" for the issues that have been introduced, you have no choice but to go further down the rabbits hole in these "creators" updates, and everything else they bring along with them.....

Have fallen back to win 7 few months ago, and no complaints. Especially when my 1080ti decided after the creators update, that it could not hold 100hz in Rocket League anymore. That game can run on a Potato......

yeah, I run Win 10 and Win 7 dual boot on separate ssd's. and to be honest I get better performance in gaming benchmarks and higher fps in Win 7. I prefer Win 10 though just for the look of it(subjective) and never upgraded from the 1607 Anniversary build nor have been offered it through Windows update.
having seen all the issues with the 'Creators' update on the BF1 forums I never had any intention of using it thankfully.

Keep in mind he's one of our many non-native english editors. That said, I'm sure pointers like that are appreciated.

Be thankful he doesn't "go native" on you. :p

and after that you have to wait to get the fixes tofix those fixes that fixed these fixed, supposedly. its really never ending with m$ but they have to produce something for overpaying them for a pile of half working junk.

And in the meantime you realize you have entered into the full subscription model that Windows 10 is based around. Because you better bet that the pop ups, ads, onedrive, office tools are all going to be working as intended to get you to sign up :).

The idea is good, but the implementation has a long way to go.

What exactly this has to do with tracking? Exactly what?

Nothing. It's comments like that that give us people with a legit beef about the telemetry model (like myself) a bad name.

Sadly, the "tracking" thing has pretty much reached buzzword status.

I do agree with the rest of his comment though, it seems the tracking components get q&a out the wazoo, while "normal" desktop functions are left high and dry.

It isnt worth it. For you to get same performance as win7 gaming you need a lot of tweaking on win10. Bs os for gaming. You fix all your problems by using windows 7. You lose dx12 but I dont care. Win10 is not a good os, ppl got brainwashed because it was free to upgrade

I can't even use my 7700k on Win 7 anyways. And 8's more tablet centric approach was atrocious.

But when you say you don't care about dx12, I question just how commited to gaming a person can be. You'll need it sooner or later.

I think it took the best of both 7 and 8, personally. And they'll fix this current issue soon enough.

I love how MS makes us all feel warm and fuzzy inside, calling us "creators" and all that.

I think it's just that they're actually trying to entice real creators :p I mean, they're also marketing surface (especially the big wacom looking one) for creators. Especially as Apple becomes more irrelevant in that space (stupid!) in favor of phones.
The bulk of the Spring (and now Fall) updates are just cumulative updates like we're always used to though.

Dated? 8.1 has good performance yes, but has awful mouse accel built in and you need a start menu fix, and all of them use resources and internet connections, wich sucks.

Also 8.1 doesnt "outperform" win 7 in gaming, at best it is as good. Windows 7 with windows classic theme is still the fastest on any task/benchmark.

You can use 7700k on windows 7 ofc... You dont need DX12 for anything apart from MS exclusives. DX12 is not big as previous DX were. Always support for either DX11 or vulkan.

Last I tried I couldn't....

I guess I'm happy enough to just move on to 10 to even look into it further. The only reason I needed it was Skyrim's vram/enb issues... and even that is being fixed.

I haven't really needed dx12 either tbh, but now with Forza 7, I will.

No, it's actually faster. You are somewhat crippling yourself with a dated WDDM model.

Mind you, you're not missing much. At best the difference is 5%, usually much lower.
